Competition Rules

Suffolk’s funniest people are being sought by BBC Radio Suffolk for a Comedy Writing Competition.

Working in partnership with national radio,
BBC Radio Suffolk is scouring the county in search of new comedy writing talent for a chance to have their work produced by the BBC.

A panel of celebrity writers will judge the entries, including David Croft, co-writer and producer of the hit TV series Dad’s Army, Are You Being Served?, Allo Allo and Hi-de-Hi and BBC Radio 1’s legendary disc jockey John Peel.

Applicants should submit a comedy script of up to five minutes in duration, such as a stand up piece, a monologue, a sketch, or a new form comedy designed for radio by Friday 14th June 2002.

BBC comedy producer Elizabeth Freestone will produce the winning scripts using professional actors.
Elizabeth will also offer applicants the benefit of her expertise in a special workshop to be held in Ipswich on Friday 17th May 2002.

The winning entries will have their work professionally recorded and broadcast for Sally Goodwin and David Webb's afternoon show, with a special repeat at Christmas.

David Peel, Editor, BBC Radio Suffolk says: "I'm really excited by this competition. There are lots of comedy clubs in the East and I'll eat my hat if we don't find some super talent. It's also brilliant to have David Croft and John Peel judging the scripts. They are both famous for their humour, David through his superb TV writing for Dad's Army and the like, and John for his funny sideways look at life in his own network radio show."
