If you get a chance, go learn how to scuba dive & get a license in Taiwan (they are international diving licenses). Not only is it cheap (less than 1/3 of the price @ US), you'll see a lot of amazing stuff unique to Taiwan/Southeast Asia in the sea. Enjoy your stay =)

Make sure you get your work and accommodation and transport and friends and sell some stuff to bring with you by joining the yahoo newsgroup long before you arrive.

I'm an American who lived in Taiwan for two years. It was a fantastic experience!

I met my Taiwanese wife online. I've been there 5 times since we met(once to get married) and I love it there. The people are kind and I'm lucky to have a wife with family and friends who make me feel like I'm right at home when I'm in Taiwan even though I'm over 7000 miles from home. If I didn't have a house and a good job here, I'd be movin to Taiwan instead of her moving here. The people are great, my new family is amazing and the service in taiwan is better than anywhere I've been in the US. Anyhow, you get the point... I love Taiwan and it's people.

A wise decision to stay in Taipei for another year, Shawn. Taiwan, especially Taipei, is a great place. Foreigners might dislike her initially, but they will fall in love in her after a while and then have a strong desire to settle down there for good.

Hey, I am a Taiwnese living in UK. Many thanks for sharing your experience in Taiwan. Nice to know people enjoying living there so well.

Taiwan is a great country to visit or stay for modern young people, like Shawn.
High liviing standard, reasonable liviing cost, freedom of speech/believe, and friendness of Taiwanese people; those are reasons why more and more young people from Europe, USA and Canada decide to stay in Taiwan permanently after visiting the country.
Ten years ago, we had 5 English teachers from UK in our local school. Today, seeing a westen face in my city - Kaohsiung is very common everyday, and I was very surprised to find out majority of them are carrying Taiwanese passport.
Taiwan is indeed a great country.

I hope you take the time to learn about the politics, history and culture of Taiwan while you are there. Make sure you visit the 228 Memorial and Museum in the Taipei Peace Park near the central railway station.
