A is for Aldeburgh
little fishing boat
Aldeburgh has a long fishing tradition

Tradition is important to the people of Aldeburgh but there is more to this town than its history.

Aldeburgh has prospered from the success of its boat building and fishing industries in the past.

Although the fishing industry has declined, a stroll along the beach past the tangles of ropes, buoys and nets, and the little huts selling the catch they have just landed, show that this is still an active fishing town.

The fish caught off Aldeburgh beach is earning the town a reputation in another way nowadays.

The Cooney family have owned a fish and chip shop in this picturesque town for the last 30 years and regularly have customers queuing along the street to sample their award winning fish and chips.

The fame of their little shop has even reached the national press with the Times describing it as, "possibly the finest on the East Coast."

Another important part of town life is the Aldeburgh lifeboat, the Freddie Cooper.

Ian Firmin and his crew save many lives a year, risking their own to head out to see in sometimes trecherous conditions.

There is a lot more to Aldeburgh than maybe the thousands of tourists that visit the town each year are aware.

To the people that live there, it is a very special place.

Do you live in Aldeburgh? What about Aldeburgh makes it so special?

The idea of the A_Z was to give users some brief information about different areas in the county. But you can contact your local Tourist Information for more information.
e.g. Online Team
