Hiding From Shadows

Hiding From Shadows at the Railway, Ipswich

Putting on a gig Easter Monday was never going to be a great idea, in fact it’s not even close to a good idea.

The majority of your potential revellers are either full of chocolate and unable to move, or are too exhausted after a massive Easter feast.

But then Hiding From Shadows aren't the kind of band to shy away from challenges, however bizarre and ill-advised.

Consisting of Thomas Mills (Framingham) 'old boys', Hiding From Shadows have found themselves living in such far flung places with exotic sounding names as Brighton, Norwich and Kelsale.

Regular punters on the Ipswich scene may well recognise singer Henry and guitarist Janusz from an older (and now sadly defunct) Ipswich musical incarnation Victim Unknown, but we won't dwell on that for now.

Taking the now common place step of recording an album before this (their first) gig has paid off, and by the time they take the stage members of the crowd smile and nod knowingly as the duel vocals soar and come crashing back down in perfect timing with the grinding and shimmering guitars.

This rise and fall crescendo is the musical equivalent of a swelling ocean withdrawing and then rising and pounding its fury upon the beach, and we like getting wet.

This reviewer has never seen a band so tight at their first outing, and can't recall seeing one so well appreciated so early on either.

Sadly Shapes changed their mind about their performance and went home so I'm afraid I can't tell you too much about them.

But as for Hiding From Shadows, well they may have disappeared a few years ago in the annual cull that university makes upon our town, but oh boy it's great to have them back!
