'Til Death Valley do us part

Suffolk-based singer and rock legend Steve Harley has returned from his 350-mile tandem ride across California and Nevada. He's an ambassador for the Mines Advisory Group which works on clearing landmines in Cambodia.

Steve was one of a party of volunteers with MAG which also works to clear mines in other countries such as Angola in southern Africa.  He was sharing his tandem with one of his south Suffolk neighbours Tom Dickinson.

"We were building up momentum very quickly and we were heading towards a lot of US visitors down below at 43 mph!"

He'd previously cycled around Cambodia trying to raise awareness but this was something different: "One day we were cycling uphill for 32 miles starting off 200 feet below sea level up to a peak of 5,000 feet above sea level.  The easy bit is coming down and you get up to 40mph.

"Around the buttocks it does get very, very sore!  I can hardly believe I've been and gone and done it.  It's been a huge adventure.  It's a magnificent, almost indescribable piece of geography.  It's barren, forbidding, unremitting, relentless and very beautiful and we enter Las Vegas in Nevada in triumph!

Death Valley

Death Valley from Zabriskie Point

"The worst thing that happened to me was at the peak of Zabriskie Point [which is also the title of a Antonioni film with a Pink Floyd soundtrack from the late 1960's]. Tom was taking a break and I went down from the peak with the repairs guy Ben.

"As we were cycling down the third of a mile he announced that the brakes had gone.  We were building up momentum very quickly and we were heading towards a lot of US visitors down below at 43 mph. Ben managed to get the bike into a bit of rough track but we managed to keep it under control.  I did fall off but only twisted my ankle slightly.

"I think we've raised between £60,000-£100,000.  They're doing another Death Valley trek in November 2007 if anyone's interested.  There were 44 volunteers on my trip.
