Flea, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Rolling Stones for a new generation? That’s the thought I was left pondering with as I filed out of Portman Road at the end of a gloriously sunny Friday 30th June 2006.

Other people I’m sure were trying to put answers to other similarly important questions for example “Has he put on a few pounds since the last time I saw them?”  To that I can give you a clear-cut “No” and if you want proof just check out the picture gallery of the night >>>

The women around me were certainly in agreement.  They cooed and waited for the moment Anthony Kiedis peeled back the layers to reveal his infamous tattooed torso.

Try a Mexican restaurant?

As an impartial observer all I can say is I hope I'm as honed in my middle age! A fairly impressive achievement when you consider the punishment the bodies and minds of the band have received over the years.

The Chilis are a testament to the adage “what doesn’t break me will make me stronger” –  as a collective they have battled their drugs demons over the years and this experience clearly influences their lyrics and the passion they have for what they do and the lives they have now.

We saw before us four men unified by their past, their obvious talent and above all a love of their music. The passion they have for it is clear for all to see -  they enjoy what they do. This is clear from the jams between and during tunes – on a musical level it’s a real pleasure to be in their world for an hour or two.

Anthony Kiedis, Red Hot Chili Peppers

The new album is an epic double disc and maybe that’s made it hard for the fans to have digested it well enough to really get into the new music.  But for me that’s not what the Chilis are about – they have a back catalogue that most bands would kill for.

“Californication” on the night was simply immense, the inner rocker in me loved …me and my me and my me and  “My Friends!” and the powerful but fragile “Scar Tissue” was met by a cheer far greater than anything the stadium has heard for many a season.

This may sound like a somewhat gushing review but it’s just a reflection of the night I had. That’s not to say this band is flawless – far from it.  I saw them at a German music festival a year or two ago and I came away from that feeling flat.  Vocally poor and, dare I say this, out of time.

But whether that was technical problems or an off day it simply wasn’t the case at Portman Road.  I challenge anyone not to have enjoyed this performance. It was well… red hot! I thought I’d be able to avoid that cliché but, no, it's crept in.

The crowd lapped it up – none more so than the encore. If you think I‘m clichéd how about this for a piece of crowd pleasing – a lighter-waving rendition of “Under the Bridge” followed by a foot to the floor “Give It Away”. Predictable? Yes, but let’s not forget these songs are crowd favourites for a reason – people love to hear them.

This sums the Red Hot Chili Peppers for me. Great songs, sing-along moments that unite people of all tastes and rocking tunes that make people want to dance. Sound familiar? Leaving me with one question …..Mick who?

Indeed, i may ahve broken my leg two weks beofre the concert therefore meaning i was as clsoe as i could get seated rather than at the front as i planned but it was an awesoem night, one fo the best ggis ive been to consideign im 16 tht aint to many. from what i saw the bottle throwing seemed to be msotly when the support acts were on and when peopl wer getting on shoulders of other people.Your right about the drunkards although i di see 5 people taken out of the concert ,adn then there was that crazy drunk possibly welsh ive been told guy who ran on the cobbold stand overhang and then got escorted out.but it was an aweosme night, althoguh bein on crutches is tuck arounfd till alot of people were home and the place was littered with empty crushed bottles. I just wish idve been able to get out and get merchandise alas noone would let me out:( so hopefully "me and my freinds",haha got it,will all go together o see their next tour in england, there better be one, . so to sum up awesome night best expeince ever, the stage was awesoem to as well as the oerall atmosphere "by the way" it was a trgic end to such young peopels lives that night RIP m gonna enjoy life to the full i think after braking my leg and seeing what realy couldve happend. the crowd went tottlay crazy for by the way i just saw a jumping mass of people coverd in red light i belive, anyway awesome night long live the chilis RHCPRoB(plz comeback to i need to go crazy this time because its hard when your in the stands) AWESOme!!

boggy bogson

Perry Sands
Red Hot Chili Peppers were superb at portman road. They rocked. Mosh was great.

Lyndsey
They showed me and my banner! Made 2 years ago on a train on the way to see the Chilis in Hyde Park!

peter
Truly amazing, reli it was fantastic, they opened with "can't stop", and played a few from stadium arcadium, such as "dani california" "charlie" and "snow" all of which were out of this world!!, still "californication" and "by the way" were the best of the lot, uplifting the crowd and letting people in colchester grind their teeth with envy!!

Dave C
Don't know about the gig but a very interesting article! Nice pic too!

Jenna
I am never going to forget that concert. It has been the bestest day of my life......

Mark Dawes
Awesome Concert, have seen them everytime they have been in the UK since 1990, and this has to be one of the best shows they have put on, despite being dogged with a few sound issues! All in, an excellent night save for the minority who find it fun to lob bottles of bodily fluid etc at people! RIP to the people involved in the tragic accident on their return trip from this concert!

The Diva
A brilliant night for the muis but marred, for me, by the mindless idiots who persist in bottle throwing, bundling by-standers and generally being obnoxious to all around them. A group of lads near to us would never have been let into a football game in their drunken state for fear of hooliganism, so WHY let them into a concert? With tickets costing over £40 I would have expected a much tighter level of marshalling from ITFC officials.

Rowan Newman
I couldn't agree more i thought the venue gave and atmosphere of intimacy and energy. The Chilis certainly have a few years left in them - rock on!!

Jemma
Chilis were amazing! Has anyone got the list of songs they played on Friday?
