ReviewsYou are in: Suffolk > Entertainment > Music > Reviews > Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers ![]() Review: Red Hot Chili PeppersBy Jim Connolly The Rolling Stones for a new generation? That’s the thought I was left pondering with as I filed out of Portman Road at the end of a gloriously sunny Friday 30th June 2006. Other people I’m sure were trying to put answers to other similarly important questions for example “Has he put on a few pounds since the last time I saw them?” To that I can give you a clear-cut “No” and if you want proof just check out the picture gallery of the night >>> The women around me were certainly in agreement. They cooed and waited for the moment Anthony Kiedis peeled back the layers to reveal his infamous tattooed torso. ![]() Try a Mexican restaurant? As an impartial observer all I can say is I hope I'm as honed in my middle age! A fairly impressive achievement when you consider the punishment the bodies and minds of the band have received over the years. The Chilis are a testament to the adage “what doesn’t break me will make me stronger” – as a collective they have battled their drugs demons over the years and this experience clearly influences their lyrics and the passion they have for what they do and the lives they have now. We saw before us four men unified by their past, their obvious talent and above all a love of their music. The passion they have for it is clear for all to see - they enjoy what they do. This is clear from the jams between and during tunes – on a musical level it’s a real pleasure to be in their world for an hour or two. ![]() The new album is an epic double disc and maybe that’s made it hard for the fans to have digested it well enough to really get into the new music. But for me that’s not what the Chilis are about – they have a back catalogue that most bands would kill for. “Californication” on the night was simply immense, the inner rocker in me loved …me and my me and my me and “My Friends!” and the powerful but fragile “Scar Tissue” was met by a cheer far greater than anything the stadium has heard for many a season. This may sound like a somewhat gushing review but it’s just a reflection of the night I had. That’s not to say this band is flawless – far from it. I saw them at a German music festival a year or two ago and I came away from that feeling flat. Vocally poor and, dare I say this, out of time. But whether that was technical problems or an off day it simply wasn’t the case at Portman Road. I challenge anyone not to have enjoyed this performance. It was well… red hot! I thought I’d be able to avoid that cliché but, no, it's crept in. The crowd lapped it up – none more so than the encore. If you think I‘m clichéd how about this for a piece of crowd pleasing – a lighter-waving rendition of “Under the Bridge” followed by a foot to the floor “Give It Away”. Predictable? Yes, but let’s not forget these songs are crowd favourites for a reason – people love to hear them. This sums the Red Hot Chili Peppers for me. Great songs, sing-along moments that unite people of all tastes and rocking tunes that make people want to dance. Sound familiar? Leaving me with one question …..Mick who? last updated: 17/11/2008 at 15:06 Have Your Say
