Presenter profilesYou are in: Suffolk > BBC Radio Suffolk > Presenter profiles > Mark Matthews ![]() Mark interviews Jim Magilton Mark MatthewsTwo things remain constant in my career, a love of sport and radio. So it was only a matter of time before I ended up doing both at Portman Road and at every other Ipswich Town game. Listen to Mark Matthews' BBC Radio Suffolk racing industry documentary. It was awarded gold in the Sport Coverage category at the 2006 BBC Local Radio Gillard Awards. Help playing audio/video Mark went to school in Thurston near Bury St. Edmunds and has been working in radio for over 20 years. He started his radio career in the murky world of pirate radio in the 1980's, which included a lengthy stint on Radio Caroline broadcasting from the North Sea. Then it was off to Invicta Radio in Kent which then led to nearly three years working in France. Mark says "There's probably a book worth of laughs and experiences to come out of broadcasting from a barn above a converted nightclub"! After they closed down Mark came back to his roots and spent over five years at SGR in Ipswich before leaving to start his own business. Mark was tempted out of radio retirement by a former colleague who persuaded him to get into producing sport at Independent Radio News in London and he stayed until November 2000 when he joined BBC Radio Suffolk.
