Body building Championship 2005
Body building Championship 2005

Muscles, High Heels, Fake tan and Showmanship

By Rob Dunger
For the first time in its history, the WABBA (World Amateur Body Building Association) held the European finals in Great Britain.

European  Body building & Fitness Championship 2005

For the whole day (25th June) Colchester's Leisure world was taken over by body-beautiful and massive-muscle.

Over 115 competitors from 16 countries tried to combine their camaraderie with the intense rivalry which the sport engenders including an entry from Suffolk. Everyone of the competitors trying to attain recognition for a lifetime of dedication to fitness, discipline, diet and sheer hard work.

The day started at 9am with the pre-judging, whereby the panel of judges were able to narrow down the huge field to a manageable final selection. Sadly, at this section the only Suffolk entrant was knocked out. The pre-judging and preparation continued until 6pm when the main show was to begin.

I took the opportunity to go backstage just before 6pm to see how preparations were going on. Competitors from every country were taking the opportunity to pump up their muscles to reach their peak for showing. Fake tan was being literally being applied everywhere, to create a type of optical illusion. The dark skin they achieve causes their muscles to appear more defined up on stage, than a pasty white complexion. They often have to go over the top because harsh stage lighting makes the skin tone
appear lighter.

The ladies section was also in full preparation. Backstage, they were grabbing their 'bikini sticks' and gluing themselves into their bikinis. In the background their evening gowns were hanging up ready for the formal section.

The show was split into several categories. The competitors "showed" together and also had the opportunity to demonstrate their individual routines. As at such events, the audience was extremely vocal with encouragement for their favourite. To reach the final stage, it might be corny, but everyone was a winner. However the final line-up was:

Amateur Section:
The winner came from Guadeloupe

Professional Section:
1st Latvia
2nd Guadeloupe
3rd Greece

Building a perfect body is good. The guys look great with big bisceps and perfect Abs. This makes younger guys to work hard to tone their bodies to be fit.
