 | | The tower now stabilised and restored |
The village has long mourned the loss of its ancient and historic church after its redundancy and closure in 1975. Since then it had been left empty, neglected and vandalised. Following court action by Mid Suffolk District Council against its previous owners, Suffolk Architectural Heritage Trust were able to acquire the property. With substantial grant help from English Heritage and a loan from the Architectural Heritage Fund, the Trust commissioned a full structural restoration of the Grade II listed St Andrew’s Church.

The work comprised substantial repairs and stabilisation of the tower, its bell chamber and lower floors, re-roofing of the nave and chancel, restoration of all windows, including missing stone tracery, and reinstatement of the chancel floor.
During this work the Trust were delighted to have discovered two substantial sections of wall foundations from the original Saxon church. This has been sympathetically indicated by the architect in the new floor. All the repairs have been done by R & J Hogg Ltd of Coney Weston, under the supervision of Nicholas Jacob Architects of Ipswich.

The Trust have sold the restored shell for conversion to a Christian Centre by the newly established Anglia Church Trust who are ready to start their conversion programme as soon as the property is handed over to them. Anglia Church Trust have organised a dedication service at the church on St Andrew's day, Tuesday 30th November to which all villagers and those involved in the project have been invited. |
