Crib traditions The crib, or manger, was where baby Jesus was laid after his birth in the stable. In many cultures and homes the family crib scene is a tradition that marks the beginning of the Christmas season. The popularity of nativity sets is said to be due to St Francis. He visited Rome in 1223 and asked permission from the Pope to hold a special Christmas celebration. He constructed a living nativity with Mary, Joseph, the donkey, ox and shepherds. On Christmas night a child was placed in the crib. |
