Annual Crib Exhibition 2005

This event has proved extremely popular for the last four years, drawing large crowds of people.

It's an opportunity to see over 80 different cribs, old and new, from all parts of the world.

It is interesting to see how the same well-known story is interpreted by different ages and cultures.

The exhibition this year is at Ashfield Village Hall and St Mary's Ashfield.   The exhibition runs from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th December 2005.

It is open between 10.00am and 4.00pm.  Refreshments will be served in the Village Hall.  Admission is free.

Crib traditions

The crib, or manger, was where baby Jesus was laid after his birth in the stable.  In many cultures and homes the family crib scene is a tradition that marks the beginning of the Christmas season.

The popularity of nativity sets is said to be due to St Francis.  He visited Rome in 1223 and asked permission from the Pope to hold a special Christmas celebration.

He constructed a living nativity with Mary, Joseph, the donkey, ox and shepherds.  On Christmas night a child was placed in the crib.
