Orford
Quay
Orford lies on the banks of the River Ore and centuries ago, when
it had free access to the sea, it was a bustling riverside port trading
in fish and wool.
The river originally entered the sea at Aldeburgh, five miles to the
north, but deposits on the far side of the river began to form a shingle
bank, running parallel to the coast.
Today the river reaches the sea several miles south of Orford. Over
the years an island has formed between Orford Quay and the shingle
bank. This is Havergate Island and it is an RSPB nature reserve. |
