Ipswich Crematorium

Ipswich Crematorium has two chapels, the North Chapel and the West Chapel. They offer a maximum availability of eight services per chapel per day.

During the service, when the committal of the body takes place, the coffin is obscured from view by curtains. It is then withdrawn into the committal room where the name plate is checked and an identity card issued. The cremation itself will usually take place shortly after the service.

The picture you can see is taken from the committal area, looking through to the chapel. You can see two of the cremators (silver squares on the wall).

The Code of Cremation Practice insists that each cremation is carried out separately. A cremator can only accept one coffin at a time and all remains are removed before the unit can be used again.

The identity card accompanies the cremated remains, which are reduced to a fine consistency suitable for storage and eventual disposal.
