Dr George reflects on life on the road
We asked Dr George to look back over his summer on the road with the Street Doctor team and recall some of his favourite moments. Here is what he remembered.
Great privilege visiting all the cities but found Liverpool memorable. To me Liverpool is synonymous with the Beatles, football and the Liver Birds. It was a great thrill to be able to climb up under one of the Liver Birds. This required a work permit and boy what a great view!
Our Sunday filming on the Isle of Wight was the day the clock went back. Blue skies, no wind and a temperature of about 70 degrees with a truly carnival spirit as we had speed boats, wind surfers and on dry land skateboards. It was apparent to all it was the last day of an Indian summer, everybody realised that and tried to savour every moment.
One of the funniest moments was when visiting Bertie on his farm in Belfast, when we started to film no sooner had we started when one cow started to moo, as soon as she started about another couple of cows joined in, we ended up with a cacophony of moos on at least half a dozen occasions - Sound of Moosic!
Also on the Isle of Wight I was examining a charming ladies ear, standing on the beach while she was perched on a wall leading into the sea. A sudden stop to filming had to be called by the producer as, unbeknown to me, a rapid incoming tide was within about 6 ft and would have covered my shoes and equipment without a hasty retreat further inland.
In Newcastle the very second patient I met was Alf who was waiting with his wife's wheelchair outside a hairdresser shop. A very friendly and nice man we got into jocular conversation as I had to do 2 or 3 takes coming out of the front door of the hairdresser.
Alf was telling me about a few medical problems he had when I noticed a lesion on his nose. this is a form of skin cancer and very early on in the filming of the series, this further emphasized to me how hopefully though Street Doctors is entertaining we are also undertaking good work. Alf is now receiving treatment.
