Information
» The grand old lady of Burslem has had a torrid time of
it recently. The
theatre, designed by Russell & Cooper of London, was constructed in 1911,
and saw service as a music-hall and, in more recent years, as a home to local
operatic societies and even one-off major concerts.
It had to close in
1998 due to safety reasons, as the need for repairs grew more pressing, but was
neglected - which led to the ceiling collapsing in 1999. Fortunately
in 2003, the Theatre was purchased; leading to it being refurbished as a 1000-seat
concert venue and theatre (see pic above - of the moulding being restored under
scaffolding) and it opened in December 2003 as a new venue.
Both
Jonathan Wilkes and Robbie Williams have performed on the stage at the Queens
- and Jonathon Wilkes made his first ever stage appearance in a Stoke Amateur
Operatic Society production of Hans Christian Andersen. |
