It's
no mystery that The Rocky Horror Show attracts a fanatical following
of fishnet fetishists - but there are fans.... and there are serious
disciples!
One disciple is Robert Bagnall from Leek who has watched
the film around 300 times and is about to rack up his 100th show
when the cult classic returns to Stoke-on-Trent, starring local
boy Jonathan Wilkes.
Rob's been a fan for 18 years and is gearing up for another dose
of Frank N Furter mayhem.
His fascination with the show began through his love for B movies
and old sci-fi films.
He used to stay up late with his dad to watch all these 'tacky'
old films, but one day his father took him to see the Rocky Horror
Show instead.
The mixture of the B film backdrop, the glam rock 'n' roll music
and the fun of dressing up proved irresistible.
Interview
He insists that the moment he heard the opening track 'Science Fiction/Double
Feature', he was immediately hooked.
"As soon as I heard those songs, I knew this was for me. I
want more of this!"
His bedroom is a veritable shrine to Frank N Furter and his pals:
posters, CDs and videos from all over the world. He's even got a packet
of Rocky Horror condoms!
One
of his treasured possessions naturally is a Frank N Furter doll,
which if you squeeze it, belts out the 'Time Warp'.... what else!
Dressing up
Rob has already prepared two new costumes in the run up to his 100th
show.
He's made a new Eddy costume himself, but he's also specially commissioned
a transsexual spacesuit, styled on the one worn by Riff Raff at
the end of film.
However, Rob makes it clear that he is not obsessed - he swears
he only wears the basque and fishnets during showtime!
"This is just a costume, all part of the character. In fact,
anyone who's ever worn this costume will know it's actually very
uncomfortable."
In fact, he suggests that the Rocky Horror show has played an important
part in his own personal development.
"Rocky Horror has given me lots of pleasure over the years.
It's done wonders for my confidence. The high I get from it is a
very innocent high, but the buzz is there every time and I just
love it."
The
Rocky Horror Show is at The Regent in Stoke on Trent in January
and November 2003.
