BBC Radio Stoke presenters and staff took to the boards for charity
whne they did a one-off performance of Cinderella at the Gatehouse
Theatre.
If you've a strong stomach, have
a look at the pictures.
Panto time
Talking
of pantos, we've done up a kind of summary of the local manifestations
of that odd and British theatrical phenomenon on our Panto
Page.
Wonder what the rest of the EU makes of it all?
Anybody for opera?
Chris Ramsden is. Our resident expert in large-ladies-who-sing, is
slavering at the thought of the Glyndebourne Opera in Hanley this
week...
"......My
picnic hamper is packed. My brolly is ready. I'm going to spend the
week at Glyndebourne.
I'm not sure how the authorities at the Regent theatre in Hanley would
view my brewing up in Row F; dimly, I imagine.
The traditional interval picnic might have to be swopped for a choc
ice.
So maybe some of the splendours of the Sussex countryside will not
be available this week. Others, however, will, in the form of top
class performances of three highlights of music theatre -- Carmen,
Eugene Onegin and Albert Herring.
Carmen
(right) is undoubtedly the most exciting prospect.
This production gets four stars out of five from the Guardian; the
paper says it should be shocking and overwhelming -- and in David
McVicar's production it largely is.
The paper was less happy about Eugene Onegin and Albert Herring --three
stars out of five each (though remember, this is the paper that gives
most Hollywood films no stars at all..)
But Onegin contains some lovely music; I'd go to a lift if Tchaikovsky
was writing the music for it.
Herring apparently has sets which are "triumphs of theatrical realism"
-- can't wait.
If you've never given opera a whirl before, now's the time. They've
even got subtitles (or rather surtitles, over the top) so you know
what's going on.
Past visits from Glyndebourne have proved what power and excitement
opera can have.
Even without the fishpaste sandwiches(?)....."
Wilkesy returns

is back! |
The way
we see it, hordes of young ladies will be hanging round the Regent
Theatre on the 13th January.
That's the day the Rocky Horror Show (30th anniversary tour) opens
in Hanley - with Johnathan Wilkes, local boy done good in the leading
role.
It just so happens that a certain Robbie Williams, who was also bred
in the city, is one of his best mates...
Nantwich re-opens
The
Nantwich Players' Theatre now officially re-opened after a major refurbishment,
and its first production will be My Three Angels (December
7th-14th), a happy play set in a French penal colony (..well.. that's
what they told us...).

Players' Theatre roof. (why we have a pic of the roof... we
don't know)! |
The theatre
now has a new solid (concrete), timber-topped stage area; the seating
decking has been replaced; new stage lights with computer controls
have been installed; the theatre will be warmer in cold weather with
the installation of gas central heating and the foyer bar has been
extended. An audio loop system for patrons using hearing aids has
been installed, and seats in the front row can now be removed for
patrons in wheelchairs.

Stoke Panto
Wish I'd seen it! Heard all about it on Radio
Stoke, & hurried home to download the pictures. Hilarious! Nice
to be able to put a face to the voices I hear, despite some
being "tarted-up"! Congratulations on raising 2,000 for RASCAL.
