Review
of Millennium I think that "Millennium", the song that launched Rob here
in Canada, is about today's jet-set, and far less traditional generation that
tries their best to find a balance between their work and love life.
For instance, the verse lines "Some say that we are players/Some say that we are
pawns/But we've been making money/since the day that we were born/got to slow
down/'cos we're low down" show that today's generation, despite their position
in society, has always been very driven, or motivated to succeed professionally
, and now feels the need to tone things down a little to make room for romance
and success in the personal life field. The next stanza: "Run around in circles/Live
a life of solitude/'Til we find ourselves a partner/Someone to relate to/Then
we'll slow down/before we fall down" also reflects the idea that today's youth,
unlike their predecessors, has been putting their careers first, as oppose! d
to making love, marriage and starting a family their priority.
Additionally,the
references to selfishness, plastic surgery, or rather the materialism it symbolizes,
and astrology throughout this song illustrate the change in values between our
generation, and the ones before it. I suppose that deep down, this song also says
that finding love will improve one's life, and make it seem far less stressful
and hectic. This, by the way, has been a reccurring theme in many of Rob's
songs, such as "Feel", and "Love Somebody" for example. As we are talking about
the meaning's of Rob's tunes, I am curious about a few myself. First are "Kids"
and "How Peculiar" just plain raunchy, or is there something more to them? As
well, what is "Rock DJ" all about? I find it to be a very fun song with an awesome
rythm, and a crazy, sexy, and completely innovative video, but what do the words
specifically mean???

of Millennium This is one of those songs everyone knows but not everyone
remembers who sang it!
So many of Rob's songs are classics for this reason that I hesitate to use
the word, but this one really is. The
beat thumps out in a drum machine style, pulsing you through the whole song. A
natural dance number, but distinguished by that lovely Robbie chorus of angel
backing singers, it implores the listener to join in! Straight in with
an impossibly catchy chorus, which is in itself a very Robbie thing to do, it
then moves into a rather hard vocal - almost rappy in style to me at least - before
returning quickly back to the chorus. This pattern is repeated throughout,
alternating a simple verse style, vocal and drum rhythm based, with the thematic
full chorus. This allows the listener to learn the song very quickly and singalongwith
Rob, participating in the fun all the way! The beat never changes, except
on returning to the chorus each time, where the anticipation tantalises me to
hold my breath in excitment of the rush to come.... you do love to wind us up,
Robbie! The
lyrics immediately enrol you by saying 'WE got stars directing our fate...' a
lovely RW trick to enjoin us all in his experience. The 'We' vibe continues
throughout- is Robbie singing to his future love (remember this tune comes from
'Ive been expecting you') or is it really meaning to address all of us?
Only the man himself can say, but I am sure we would all love to know!
A few lines stand out for me- 'We've been making money since the day that we were
born'- well I'm sure you have, Rob....and 'Live for liposuction' are my favorite
lines. 'Come and have a go if you think that you are hard enough' is
punched out, daring you to try your luck! I
love the fact that the album was released years before the millenium, a premptive
strike for the year 2000 charts, if ever there was one. Only Prince
got ahead of Robbie here, I think Princes 2000 party number was released in about
1980! I am sure this song will stand the test of time though- a hit for year 3000
as well, perhaps?! Reviewer-
