Bridge delay Important safety improvements
to Burton's Victorian ferry bridge may now be completed next year. Built in 1889,
it's been a well-used link for pedestrians between the town centre and Stapenhill.
Repairs to the footway and to the lighting had to be abandoned this summer because
of torrential rain. It's now hoped to complete the work next spring - six months
late.
Consultation ends The public consultation into a possible
new 50 mile toll road, dubbed the "M6 expressway" is due to end today.
If given the go ahead it will run alongside the M6 from Cannock to Cheshire. Proposals
are for the construction of a new tolled motorway between junction 11a of the
M6, just north of Birmingham to Junction 19 at Knutsford, South of Manchester,
or possibly as far as junction 20. The West Midlands Regional Assembly is also
today due to consider its response to the plans and minister will then exam all
responses before making a decision whether to give it the go ahead of not.

Theatre threat Cannock Chase Council has
announced a twenty million pound restructuring of its leisure facilities, which
may lead to the eventual closure of the town's Prince of Wales theatre. The move
would see the closure of the existing sports stadium to be replaced by a leisure
village. It would include a new leisure centre with a host of new facilities plus
a brand new theatre.
Trapped man saved Paramedics say a Staffordshire
pensioner is lucky to be alive after being rescued from a deep ravine where he
was trapped up to his neck in mud in appalling weather conditions. The man in
his sixties, who's not been named, is tonight being treated for hypothermia. Fire
crews pulled the man free after he was trapped in deep mud at Apedale near Newcastle

is getting the chance of a lifetime to be trained by the double gold medallist
Kelly Holmes. Jo Harper, a pupil at Thomas Alleyne Sixth Form in Uttoxeter has
qualified for one of the eight places on a training camp run by Kelly Holmes in
South Africa and will be training in high altitudes for a month.
Bellamy's
reserve Wildlife guru, David Bellamy is to open the Radford Bank Nature Reserve
in Stafford today. Over the last twelve months Staffordshire Wildlife Trust has
been working with other environmental groups to ensure that the area which is
in the floodplain of the River Penk is managed for local wildlife and preserved
as an open space.
Youth freed over 'dustbin death' A teenager arrested
over the death of a man found with a head injury in the street has been released.
John Bill, 64, from Crewe Road, Sandbach, Cheshire died after he had earlier been
involved in a confrontation with youths allegedly connected with an incident of
vandalism. Police are saying the death is suspicious and a post-mortem examination
will be held on Tuesday. Couple fail in fireworks ban bid The
High Court bid by Stephen and Suzanne Roper to stop a series of fireworks displays

light saves ambulances Staffordshire ambulances drivers are welcoming flashing
blue lights on their vehicles. Until recently, they'd been receiving hundreds
of speeding tickets. Now during an emergency call the new light remains on constantly,
which will always be picked up by speed cameras resulting in fewer tickets. An
ambulance service spokesman said "It's costing £8,000 to install the lights,
but with the county having the third highest number of speed cameras in the UK
they're already proving their worth". All of Staffordshire Ambulance's emergency
vehicles will have the new lights installed by the end of the year.
Family considers business future The Staffordshire family at the centre of
an animal rights protest is considering the future of its business after an attack
on a family grave. John Hall, who runs a guinea pig farm in the village of Newchurch,
gave his first television interview to the BBC programme Inside Out after the
remains of Gladys Hammond - his brother's mother in law - were removed from her
grave in the village of Yoxall in Staffordshire.
