24th September Man remanded over murder and rape Alan
McLaren, 40, from Irlam, Greater Manchester, is remanded in custody charged with
the murder of a prostitute in Stoke-on-Trent and the rape of another woman. See

Smells
action New powers to curb smells from an animal rendering plant are being
sought by a Staffordshire council. It says there's been a big increase in complaints
about the Pointons at Cheddleton. Last year there were 120 complaints about smells
in the area but so far this year there have been 220 complaints made to the District
Council. As a result the council's written to the secretary of state, Margaret
Beckett, for permission to use special powers under the environmental protection
act.
Court appearance A 48-year-old man charged with murdering
a police officer will appear in court today. Glaister Butler, of Long Acre, Nechells,
Birmingham, is accused of stabbing 44-year-old Det Con Michael Swindells as he
tried to make an arrest. Today's hearing will take place at Birmingham Crown Court.
Butler, who is in custody, has not been required to appear in person on the last
two occasions. Mr Swindells, a married father of one from Burton on Trent, Staffordshire,
was attacked in Nechells on May 21st this year. He suffered a single stab wound
to the stomach and later died.
Put your daughter on the stage... Scores
of young people from East Staffordshire have been at the Brewhouse in Burton this
week, auditioning for the chance to perform with the Burton Youth Theatre. Next
year it's putting on productions of Wind in the Willows and West Side Story. Its
director, Amy Vaughan, says the experience encourages youngsters to work as a
team.
Newcastle teenager a "Blast!" A seventeen year old
from North staffordshire has received a major award for her journalism. Kate Shenton,
who lives in Whitmore near Newcastle, has won a BBC Creativity award for her reports
while on placement with the corporation. Kate was was covering the arts in the
North Midlands, under the BBC's "Blast!" young journalist scheme. See

Mining
dedication One of the UK's biggest memorials has been unveiled in Staffordshire
in honour of those who dedicated their lives to the pits. The Apedale Memorial
Pit Wheel has been put up at one of the highest points in north Staffordshire
as a memorial to former miners. It's been unveiled at Apedale Country Park, six
years after the area's last deep mine closed at Silverdale. See details

Jenny
anger The Burton wheel chair racer Jenny Ridley is threatening to pull out
of the Paralympic Games. It's because of a decision by sporting authorities to
make her compete in a class higher than she's trained for. She's predicted gold
in the T52 200 and 400 metre wheelchair races, but she has been told she's been
reclassified as a T53 competitor.
Hollywood comes to the Peak District
A movie of the eighteenth century novel, Pride and Prejudice by Jane
Austen, will be filming in the Peak District this autumn. Dame Judi Dench and
"Pirates of The Caribbean" star Keira Knightley will take the leading
roles. A number of spots in the Peak National Park are being used as locations;
and tourism chiefs are hoping that the news will boost vistor numbers.

march? The National Front has sent confirmation to Staffordshire Police that
it plans to hold a march in Stoke-on-Trent next month. The force says it's now
considering what it could do should the march go ahead. In July 2001, the National
Front planned a similar march in Stoke-on-Trent but it never took place. The plans
have been condemned by the city's elected mayor Mike Wolfe who's worried it could
tarnish the area's reputation.

Plea over man missing for six months The National Missing Persons
Helpline is urging a Stoke-on-Trent man, who was last seen six months ago, to
get in touch. Andrew Horrigan, 29, from Fegg Hayes, was last seen at his ex-wife's
house in April. He has other family in Luton and it is believed he could be in
that area. Officials from the helpline are urging Mr Horrigan to call in confidence.
Mid-Staffs
teenager is sexiest - nearly! Eighteen year old Louka Travlos, from Stone
in mid-staffordshire, has narrowly missed out on being nominated the country's
"sexiest sixth-former". He was one of thirty finalists in CosmoGirl Magazine's
competiotion, but had to settle for second place. His details were submitted by…
his girlfriend.
POW
under the spotlight A meeting to discuss the future of the Prince of Wales
theatre in Cannock is to take place this evening. Hundreds of people are expected
to attend to find out what the future holds for the building. It's being chaired
by member of Cannock Chase Council's Culture and Sport Select Committee.
Pottery
action? It's understood staff at one of Stoke-on-Trent's main pottery factories
could be balloted on strike action. Workers at Royal Doulton's Nile Street factory
in Stoke-on-Trent say they're unhappy about this year's pay rise and also the
compensation deal they'll get when the plant finally shuts down. More than 500
workers will be affected by the closure of the Nile Street Factory in Burslem,
although no date for when that will happen has been announced. Royal Doulton say
as far as they're concerned negotiations are still taking place. Monday

mourns Stan Clarke

Sir
Stanley Clarke, Northern Racing Group president and owner of Uttoxeter racecourse,
dies at the age of 71. The Staffordshire millionaire was knighted in 2000 for
his services to the county, and was a major player in the racing world and equally
successful in the construction industry, amassing a vast personal fortune.
As
well as owning racecourses, his own stable brought him success on the course -
the most high profile of these was Lord Gyllene, who rode to victory in the 1997
Grand National. Clarke had fought illness for several years before passing away
peacefully.

Public given greater access to countryside New laws allowing the
public much greater access to open countryside have come into force in part of
the Staffordshire Moorlands and Cheshire. The north west, including the Peak District
National Park on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border, is one of two areas across
the country where the laws are being introduced first. Eventually there will
be a right to roam on mountains, moors, heath and downland throughout Britain.
Waste
is good business Two companies from Stafford are taking on another 20 workers
after winning a contract to help America get rid of its rubbish. Next Tec Limited
and A-I Mec Com have signed a two million pound deal to send waste processing
machines to California. Next Tec designs "Poly Melt" machines which turn rubbish,
like wrappers and bottles, into fuel for the construction industry.
Beer
off The annual beer festival organised by a micro-brewery in Burton has been
postponed, partly because it's getting too popular. The Octoberfest has
been held for the past five years at the Coors Visitor Centre - home of the Museum
Brewing Company, but the organisers say it'll now be held next year - possibly
to coincide with the Burton Regatta in July. Sunday

Intervention by the playwright allows an amateur drama company in Alrewas, Staffordshire,
to go ahead with its production despite a copyright ban. See

Games - Staffs style East Staffordshire has held its first ever sporting event
aimed at people with disabilites. More than eighty competitors turned out for
the Able To games at the Meadowside Leisure Centre in Burton this weekend. It's
been so successful organisers are considering making it an annual event.
Saturday 18th September Veterans parachute
over Arnhem Three veterans of the Battle of Arnhem, including Les Lockett,
83, from Stoke-on-Trent, take part in a parachute jump where they fought 60 years
ago. Seven hundred men from the 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment were
among those dropped at Arnhem in 1944.
