Choir threatened by lack of men A Staffordshire chamber choir, The Noteable Company, based in Rolleston-on-Dove, will be forced to stop singing if it cannot persuade more men to join. See full story from BBC News

Staffs pro and anti hunt votes Staffordshire MPs voting in the Hunting With Dogs Bill second reading did not, as had been expected, split exactly along party lines. Though all the county's Tories were against the bill, some Labour members had doubts.
Tories voting against the bill were: William Cash (Stone), Sir Patrick Cormack (Staffordshire South), Michael Fabricant (Lichfield). Labour MPs voting against the bill were: Mark Fisher (Stoke-on-Trent Central).
Labour MPs who voted for the bill: Ms Charlotte Atkins (Staffordshire Moorlands), Ms Janet Dean (Burton), Paul Farrelly (Newcastle-under-Lyme), Brian Jenkins (Tamworth), David Kidney (Stafford), Ms Joan Walley (Stoke-on-Trent North). Labour MPs who did not vote on the bill were: Mrs Gwyneth Dunwoody (Crewe & Nantwich), George Stevenson (Stoke-on-Trent South), Dr Tony Wright (Cannock Chase). See full story from BBC News

Meanwhile, one Staffordshire huntstman believes foxhunters in the county will break the law if a hunting ban is introduced in eighteen months time. Gerald DeVille, joint master of the Staffordshire Moorlands Foxhounds was at a demonstration outside Parliament.

New council tax in pipeline A 5.5 per cent increase in council tax is being proposed by Staffordshire County Council for 2005-2006. The council's cabinet will be recommended on Tuesday to go out to consultation on the figure, which is to be achieved with the aid of £5 million in efficiency savings.

Bravery award for Jeffrey A man from Stoke on Trent who risked his life to try to save a woman who was burning to death has been given a bravery award. Jeffrey Powell from Fenton had been fishing at a pool in Trent Vale when he heard screams and saw flames. He found a woman who'd set herself on fire. He tried to stop the flames with his bare hands and managed to remove clothes which had been doused in turpentine. He then soaked a blanket in water and covered the woman until the ambulance arrived. The woman died from injuries in hospital three days later. Jeffrey Powell is to be given an award from the Royal Humane society.

Thursday 16th September
Sir Stanley museum call renewed Businessman Bob Ahmed, the owner of the house where Sir Stanley Matthews was born, is trying to drum up support for a plan to turn it into a museum. See full story from BBC News

Manhunt Armed police from Staffordshire and Cheshire have carried out a manhunt after officers from Stoke-on-Trent faced a gunman during a car chase around the Kidsgrove area. They were on routine patrol when they spotted a Peugeot 406 in Goldenhill they thought could be connected to several crimes. Following a high-speed chase the driver of the vehicle pulled over on the A34 Congleton Road. A passenger wearing a mask then got out of the car and pointed what's believed to be a handgun at the officers. After driving off, the police lost the car, and it was eventually found abandoned on Old Butt Lane. It's thought the three men involved fled over wasteland towards the Lawton-Gate area.


Wednesday 15th September

Eye operation for Paraguayan girl Consultant Ray Brown, who works at Stoke's City General Hospital, and who spends his free time treating Paraguayan children, helps a girl regain her vision. See full story from BBC News

Farewell event at air base A major farewell ceremony is planned before RAF Stafford, which currently employs 1,491 people, officially ceases to exist in April 2006. Some uniformed RAF personnel will remain stationed at the town's military base after its air combat service support unit moves out next year. Group Captain Graham Howard, who will be the last commander of 65-year-old RAF Stafford, said he was "very optimistic" that the civilian operations at the 170-acre site in Beaconside would continue in the long term.

Alrewas 1, West End 0! An enterprising amateur dramatics director has won the right to stage a play, after being told no, because it would interfere with a West End production more than 120 miles away. The Alrewas Dramatics Society was busy rehearsing its production of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest at the Lichfield Garrick, Staffordshire, when the director wrote to the author to get help overruling the decision. Inspector praises prison unit The section of a Staffordshire jail which houses some of the country's most dangerous criminals has been praised by the Chief Inspector of Prisons. Anne Owers says the unit at the privately-run Dovegate prison near Uttoxeter is a very safe place. The Chief Inspector says some of the serious offenders have clearly been helped to readjust to law-abiding behaviour. The jail opened three years ago.

Staffordshire man is karting champ Twenty-one year old Mark Litchfield from Uttoxeter has lifted go-karting's Formula A championship - with two races still to go in the season. Mark is so far ahead of last year's champion, Gary Catt, he cannot be overtaken. He has scored 478 out of a possible 500 points this season. See Formula A site


Simon is a TASS man An emerging sports star from Staffordshire is one of 800 young sportsmen and women to receive backing from the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), getting underway this autumn. Simon Blairs, a 21-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent, has been competing in the martial art of taekwondo since he was six, but as a TASS scholar, in higher education, will receive sporting services worth £3,000 a year, including paying for the cost of coaching, sports science, physiotherapy and the use of training facilities. Simon is attending Staffordshire University and will be one of the first scholars on the new scheme. This year he competed in the prestigious World University Championships.

Suspect on forecourt A man's under arrest after an incident in North Staffordshire in which his car was surrounded by police. They were called to the forecourt of a petrol station on Crewe Road in Alsager after reports that the man was armed. Cheshire Police say when they arrived at the Radway Green service station they found the man locked in the car. He appeared to be armed with knives and had a pitbull dog with him in the car. Around 1pm he left the car and was arrested and taken to Northwich police station.

Sunday 12th September
Aqua's future - in a bottle The mineral water subsidiary of utilities group South Staffordshire Water has negotiated a sizeable contract to supply supermarket chain Aldi. Aqua Direct will supply ten million litres of its Elmhurst Spring mineral water a year to stores across the UK from its new £3m Staffordshire-based bottling plant, near Lichfield. Although South Staffordshire has produced bottled water for 18 years, this is the first time it has launched its own brand name.

First ever National Ambulance Memorial A 5ft 8in tall memorial to honour ambulance personnel for their dedication and commitment has been erected in a Garden of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas. It is the brainchild of former chief ambulance officer Norman Lakin, from Sandy in Bedfordshire, and is in honour of ambulance service staff who have lost their lives while working in the nation's' Ambulance Services. Rosie Winterton MP, the Minister of State for Health, will unveil the memorial at 2pm on Thursday. Mr Lakin has identified 675 people who had lost their lives whilst serving the Ambulance Services across the UK.

Saturday 11th September
Man arrested over street murder
A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a man found lying injured in a street in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The victim was found in Beasley Avenue, Chesterton, at 0130 BST on Saturday (10th September). See full story from BBC News

Naked riders take record
Naked rollercoasters It's been confirmed that Alton Towers in Staffordshire has beaten a world record for the number of people riding naked on a rollercoaster - a feat that was attempted in August.

The record was confirmed as the latest Guinness Book of Records statistics were revealed.

Staffordshire's open doors English Heritage has announced that hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit properties usually closed to the public or which charge an entrance fee for free over Heritage Open Days this weekend. More than fifty Staffordshire properties are taking part: cellars in the Red Lion Pub in Burslem and the Bethesda Chapel in Hanley are some of the attractions
