Plans to fight racism Parent support groups could be set up at schools
across Stoke-on-Trent to help ease racial tension between pupils. Volunteers
at Longton High say they're already having some success in tackling problems
there. The Longton High Parent group was formed last year by 11 parents and
a representative from the Racial Equality Council following problems bewteen
white and Asian pupils. At one point, a quarter of them were kept at home
after allegations of racial attacks and the police were brought in. The
support group organises events to try to get the children to be more tolerant
of each other and the volunteers are going to have mediation training to
help ease any further tensions. They say they now plan to visit other schools,
to help them form their own groups, as they believe racial tension between
pupils is a city-wide problem.
