City steel works to be demolished
The site of the former Shelton Bar steel works in Stoke-on-Trent is
to be demolished, four years after the plant closed. See

Police name crash death teenagers Leon Hughes, aged 18, from Burslem
and 17-year-old John Hancock from Brown Edge in Stoke-on-Trent have been
named as the victims of a car crash which saw their car leave the road near
Talke. See

County beer goes on pub tour A Staffordshire beer is being taken
on a tour before it is served at a national festival. The Burslem Porter
brewed by Titanic Breweries is travelling by horse drawn dray and barge.
It is due to arrive at the National Waterways Festival at Burton in one
week. Organisers set off on Friday from Burslem and will be stopping off
at pubs along the way. See more

MP calls for more flood support The MP for Stone says urgent action
is needed to prevent more flooding in the town. Torrential rain has caused
flooding Stone on three separate occasions in the last two weeks. Each time,
the drains there have struggled to cope with the heavy rainfall.
Wedgwood ordered to pay up The Stoke on Trent pottery company Waterford-Wedgwood
has been ordered to pay the US Attorney General half a million dollars for
breaching anti competition laws. The pottery company had agreed to sell
its products to two of the major department store groups in the US, one
of which supplies to the famous New York stores Macy's and Bloomingdales.
It was alleged that Waterford agreed with the owners of the two stores that
one of their major competitors, BBB, would not have access to a specific
range of tableware - but the Attorney General says the deal breached the
Donnelly Act competion law which forbids price fixing, and monopolisation.
End of industrial era The former Shelton Bar Steel Works in Stoke-on-Trent
is being demolished. It closed four years ago with the loss of 300 jobs.
Future plans for the 90 acre site have yet to be confirmed.

Market re-development Shops and houses are to be built on an old
East Staffordshire cattle market. The borough council has just bought the
5 acre site in Uttoxeter for 3 million pounds from Bagshaws the auctioneers.
Burton College is already expressing an interest in moving there - as is
the town council.
Vaulting into university A pole vaulting champion with his sights
set on the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing was today offered a place at the
nation's leading sports university to study PE. Steven Lewis, 18, a student
at Newcastle-under-Lyme College in Staffordshire, achieved one A-level and
one AS-level and was accepted by Loughborough University. The British Junior
Pole Vaulting Champion sat his last exam just hours before heading off to
the World Junior Championships in Italy, where he came ninth.

Man hurt in street hammer attack A man is attacked with a hammer during
a street robbery in Bentilee, Staffordshire. Police say the incident
happened at around 0200 BST when the victim, 35, was approached by two men

Victoria unchanged Attempts to restore a royal statue in Newcastle
to its original colour have been rejected. The civic society wanted the
borough council to clean up the statue of Queen Victoria in the Queen's
Gardens at a cost of £15,000. But Labour councillor John Williams says although
she may look a little dull at least it's her "natural" beauty.
Council opposes second toll road Plans for a new toll road in Staffordshire
going up to Manchester are opposed by borough councillors in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

city pubs as part of a crackdown on drink related trouble. Staffordshire
Police will visit landlords who will be vetted on every aspect of the premises'
operation.
Socialists back potteries Thousands of people have signed a petition
to save North Staffordshire's pottery industry. The Stoke Socialist Party
says people are angry about Royal Doulton closing their last factory in
the area and they want the Government to do more to prevent further job
losses.
Pottery company scales down expansion plan Another Stoke-on-Trent pottery
company has revealed it is continuing to have a tough time. Portmeirion
has gone into the red and is scaling down plans for a new distribution centre
and the expansion of manufacturing facilities. Between January and June
Portmeirion lost more than £360,000 before tax compared with a half million
pound profit for the same period in 2003.
Tracey bows goodbye Burton's Tracey Hallam was knocked out of the
women's Olympic badminton singles at the quarter finals stage, by Mia Audina
of Holland in straight sets. Hallam says after her win over Sydney Silver
Medallist Camilla Martin in the previous round, she fell a little flat.

Companies hit by distraction gang Three men have stolen thousands of
pounds from pubs, shops and off-licences in Burton, Uttoxeter, Stoke-on-Trent,
Cannock and Lichfield.

Tracey on target Burton's badminton star Tracey Hallam has recorded
a huge upset win in the Olympic singles. The 29-year-old was paired with
former World Champion Camilla Martin from Denmark in the round of 16. None
of the experts gave her a chance, but Tracey won a thrilling three setter,
saving a match point against her in the process, to move through to the
quarter finals.

Lichfield is tops for recycling Recycling of materials such as paper,
compost, glass, plastic and tin in England is at its highest level, the
Government said today. The Municipal Waste Management Survey for 2002-03
found that the two top councils in the country for recycling were Daventry
Council (44.4%), and Lichfield District Council (42.7%).
Albion blow Burton Albion start their FA Conference campaign away
to Accrington Stanley today, but the Brewers have suffered a blow before
a ball has even been kicked. Former Manchester United striker Mark Robins,
signed by Nigel Clough in pre season, has undergone surgery on his knee
and could miss three months.
