6th August Second offshore off-licence sails The organisers
behind a floating off-licence, one of whom comes from North Staffordshire, launch

Bethesda - unrestored A year after
reaching the final of last year's BBC programme, Restoration, the Bethesda
Chapel historic building in Stoke-on-Trent is unrepaired. The Historic Chapels
Trust, which owns Bethesda, has secured funding for roof repairs but is seeking
more cash, with mugs being made and sold in aid of the restoration.

Alison! An East Staffordshire teenager will be the first ever-woman to start
a course in plumbing at Burton College. Sixteen year old Alison Palmer, from Uttoxeter,
is enrolling on an Apprenticeship in Plumbing next month. Alison beat off competition
from 250 applicants for just 40 places.

5th August Water customers face price rise The water
watchdog announces a 13% increase in water bills - less than half the rise proposed
by suppliers. In the West Midlands, Severn Trent customers could see an above
average increase of 16 per cent over the next five: that's equivalent to an extra
£35 on the average bill in that period. £11 should go on South Staffordshire bills:
that's 12 per cent over five years. See

Storms bring misery Fierce storms
caused domestic problems as water and sewage swept through premises in the county.
More than 200 customers had to be evacuated from Stafford's council-run Riverside
Recreation Centre after the storm caused the roof over its reception area to collapse
- no-one was hurt, but staff were forced to clear the building and activate emergency
plans. Businesses in Penkridge were also hit as flood water poured through doorways
from the sudden storms - motorists were forced to find alternative routes as the
A449 through the village was left under water.
Lucy at cricketing history
Lucy Pearson (Staffordshire & Woverhampton) has been selected to play
in today's historic cricket match, as for the first time an international match
will be played under the 20-over format introduced to the men's county game in
2003. The NatWest Women's International Twenty20 will be held at Hove, Sussex
CCC with England taking on New Zealand.
Development work to start in
2005 The developers who have bought the site of Stoke City Football Club's
old Victoria Ground say they hope to start building at the start of 2005. St Modwens
want 150 houses and 80,000 sq ft of offices on the site in Stoke. It has been
seven years since the ground was demolished.
Toll Road review An
independent Group of MPs is holding an inquiry into the Government's plan for
a new toll motorway which will run through Staffordshire and Cheshire. The Commons
Transport Committee will look into the success of the existing M6 Toll and see
whether a new motorway is needed. The Committee will take evidence in the autumn
and report back to the Government on its findings. Wednesday
4th August Girl, 13, charged in Asbo probe A teenager
from Yarnfield is charged with breaching an anti-social behaviour
order a week after it was imposed. See

Brewhouse success A new survey suggests
audiences are returning to Burton's arts centre, the Brewhouse - two years after
it went into liquidation. After the crisis, East Staffordshire Borough Council
took it over and encouraged its use mainly as a community arts centre, rather
than a venue for professional productions.
Teenager to play Windies
Chris
Paget, a 16
year old
from Stafford,
has been selected to play for Derbyshire Cricket Club First XI against the West
Indies at Derby this week. Chris is believed to be one of the youngest players
to participate at this level.
Rose convicted The sentencing of
a New York man who murdered his British-born wife to cash in on a half-million
dollar insurance payout has been adjourned to August 9th. Eric Rose, 46, was due
to be sentenced in America tomorrow after being convicted in May of shooting dead
his wife Wendy at their home. Former Keele University student Rose had claimed
his 52-year-old wife shot herself in a delusional rage. Rose was convicted after
ballistics experts said it was a "physical impossibility" that Mrs Rose had shot
herself. Mrs Rose, originally from Kidsgrove, North Staffordshire, suffered several
gunshot wounds. See

New roads from old Motorists in East Staffordshire will soon benefit
from an innovative road recycling scheme. A country lane near Abbots Bromley is
being resurfaced using 1500 tonnes of road surfacing from other roads in the county.
It's hoped the recycling will help to sustain the environment as well as being
cost effective. Jeremy Herbert from Staffordshire County Council's Development
Department says recyclable roads are just as durable. International
drugs ring jailed Eight men, including five from Staffordshire, are jailed
after police smash a multi-million pound international drugs ring which used mailboxes
as drugs dumps. See

1st August Charity bike ride Two pensioners
from Staffordshire are preparing to set off on a 106-mile bike ride along the
canals of Cheshire. Rex Turner and his friend Bert Maxfield, who are from Kidsgrove,
are riding mountain bikes to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The
riders will start in Rode Heath and stay overnight in a Manchester pub before
returning on Tuesday. Rex says he has a personal reason for doing the ride.
