Prison arts festival helps to 'cut crime' Organisers of an arts festival that has been taking place behind the gates of a Staffordshire prison believe it will be an effective way to cut crime. Nearly 200 serious offenders at Dovegate Prison near Uttoxeter have volunteered to enter into therapy for up to two years. During this time they are encouraged to confront their offences through activities such as drama and dance. But senior tutor Tony Michael insisted it was not a soft option.

Drugs scheme proving a success Organisers of a new drugs project for young people in Stoke-on-Trent say it is showing early signs of success. The Lock is said to offer one the most comprehensive packages of help for young people who have alcohol and drug addictions. Staff offer visitors advice, detox programmes and help to find accommodation if necessary. Although the project was set up a few months ago it was officially launched today.

Deejay funeral The funeral has taken place today of the Stoke on Trent DJ, compere and entertainer Mel Scholes, who died suddenly last week. The cortege was due to pass the site of the former nightclub Jollees in Longton, where the 57 year old performed during its heyday in the 1970s. See your reaction

New GP walk-in centre opens in city People in parts of Stoke-on-Trent desperate to see their GP will be offered fast-track appointments at a new walk-in centre from Monday.
Those living in the North Stoke area of the city will now be given the opportunity of a same day appointment following the launch of a six month pilot project at Haywood hospital

More beat officers out in county More than 60 extra community beat officers are being put on the streets by Staffordshire Police.

That's cricket The boys from Christchurch Middle School in Stone in Staffordshire just missed achieving a sporting record. They lost by nine wickets in the final of the national schools under-thirteen cup against Somerset's Millfield School. Christchurch would have been the first state school to win the final.

'Floating off-licence' detained A yacht branded Britain's first offshore off-licence by its owners, has its cargo detained by customs officials. Trevor Lyons from Newcastle under Lyme is selling alcohol and cigarettes at duty free prices on the Rich Harvest, a boat anchored 13 miles off the North East coastline.

Charity in defibrillator appeal A charity has renewed an appeal to Staffordshire businesses to help it buy life-saving heart machines to be used in the Peak District. The British Heart Foundation has provided half of the £90,000 needed to pay for the defibrillators, which can be used to restart the heart. It is hoped that all rangers at the national park will eventually have a defibrillator. Charity spokeswoman Jane Icke told BBC Radio Stoke that it is an important piece of equipment
