Farm takes part in mock Foot and Mouth
exercise
An
emergency plan to see how the country would cope with another outbreak of Foot
and Mouth was tried out on Tuesday on a farm in Cheshire. The idea is to look
at new guidelines brought in since the epidemic three years ago. Vets and staff
from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in Stafford
took part in an exercises to react to the outbreak. Ian Pearson, regional operations
director at Defra, said certain things are very different to procedures used in
2001.

Police target gangs of youths Police have been targeting two gangs of
youths in Crewe who are making residents' lives a misery. Officers have been confiscating
alcohol from the two groups and trying to move the youths on, Officers have been
knocking on doors to gather evidence to avoid openly identifying witnesses. The
council and local housing association are also working to make the area a better
place to live.

to highlight food safety A city council is giving shoppers a chance to star
in their own version of a popular television show as part of National Food Safety
Week. The food safety team from Stoke-on-Trent City Council has set up a mock
kitchen in the Potteries Centre. and people will be invited to find invisible
germs around the kitchen using ultraviolet lights. Student designs
lightweight fire engine Staffordshire University David Plant, 23 designed
a
lightweight fire engine for a crew
of four or five, and although smaller than usual, it carries the full range of
firefighting equipment, including ladders and hydraulic rescue gear. The vehicle
will remain on display until Thursday at the university's art and design show
on its College Road campus in Stoke-on-Trent. League shows rise in
parking tickets The number of parking tickets issued in Stoke-on-Trent has
more than doubled, according to a national league. Stoke-on-Trent issued more
than 17,000 fixed penalty fines in the financial year 2001 2002, but in the following
year the number rose to 44,000. The number of appeals against tickets also doubled.
The AA says there is nothing wrong in enforcing regulations - provided the system
is fair.
