to build up one of the largest collection of flowers and plants in the country.

the first round of planting should be done in time for the next bank holiday.
Estate house-building plan faces opposition A landowner who wants to build
up to 100 houses in the grounds of her stately home near Nantwich has run into
opposition from council planners. Combermere Abbey is a Grade I listed building
dating back to 1133 and has been the family home of the Callander Becketts for
the past 150 years. But nearly four million pounds is needed for essential repairs
and one way of raising the money would be to create a new village within the grounds.
However, this idea has prompted strong opposition from parish councils and local
people. The application will be discussed next week.

and the scrapping of Leek and Biddulph's Middle schools is another option. Some
primary schools may also be affected. See Staffs

Hospital managers defend guide boycott Managers at North Staffordshire's
main hospital are defending their boycott of a guide to good hospitals. The Sunday
Times says the University Hospital of North Staffordshire is the only one in the
country to refuse to supply information for its annual survey. The newspaper still
managed to come up with a verdict on the hospital in Sunday's edition, reporting
higher than average death rates and outpatient waiting times. Mervyn Gamage, from
the hospital, said the boycott stemmed from two years ago when the paper published
out-of-date information on lung cancer referrals. Cattle Market welcome
back The leader of East Staffordshire Borough Council's rejected claims he's
wasting taxpayers money by buying back a cattle market sold more than ten years
ago. The five and a half acre site near the centre of Uttoxeter was sold to the
estate agent Bagshaws in 1991 for half a million pounds. Now the council's negotiating
to buy it back at a cost of more than three million. Councillor Alex Fox says
it's all part of the council's master plan to regenerate the town centre.
