Estate house-building plan faces opposition A landowner who wants to build up to 100 houses in the grounds of her stately home near Nantwich has run into opposition from council planners. Combermere Abbey is a Grade I listed building dating back to 1133 and has been the family home of the Callander Becketts for the past 150 years. But nearly four million pounds is needed for essential repairs and one way of raising the money would be to create a new village within the grounds. However, this idea has prompted strong opposition from parish councils and local people. The application will be discussed next week.
