30th April 2004 Staffordshire monument The
Staffordshire designed Spitfire could feature on a monument next to the M6 toll
road. The 140ft piece of granite, known as the Shard of Staffordshire, is designed
to rival Gateshead's Angel of the North. The three sided obelisk is the idea
of Pritchard Holdings, an architectural planning company based in Hednesford.
It felt that Staffordshire should be marked in some way and felt the beginning
of the M6 toll was an ideal place for it, at Cannock. Granite's been chosen
to represent the mining heritage of the county and each face will have a stainless
steel relief to illustrate an aspect of Staffordshire. A stag, representing Cannock
Chase will be on one face, with Reginald Mitchell's Spitfire will be on another,
but the company hasn't yet decided what to put on the third. It's now discussing
with the county council where to site the obelisk.
