18th February 2004 Rural bus services get £1.25m boost
More than two thousand rural bus services in Staffordshire are set to benefit
from a £1.25m government grant. The Rural Bus Subsidy Grants have just been announced
by the Transport Minister Tony McNulty. Cheshire will get just over £947,000 and
Stoke-on-Trent nearly £8,500. The money aims to ensure public transport is improved
in the countryside and social exclusion reduced. Asylum seeker sought
The police have contacted Interpol to help them find a man accused of killing
a young teacher from Staffordshire and her baby. Debbie Peaty, from Uttoxeter,
was seven months pregnant when she was killed in a car crash in Northamptonshire.
Ratnam Yogan, who's a Sri Lankan asylum seeker, was charged with two counts of
causing death by dangerous driving but he skipped bail and is thought to have

ill in Bentilee in Stoke on Trent is forced to close after social service chiefs
refuse a plea to fund it. Read

Page St Modwen on the up Property development company St Modwen,
founded in Burton, and with extensive interests across Staffordshire, has posted
its eleventh year of record profits. The regeneration specialist also named
its new boardroom team following the decision by Sir Stanley Clarke to retire
as chairman after 18 years at the helm. The group posted a 17% hike in pre-tax
profits to £35 million. St Modwen said Anthony Glossop would step up
from his current dual role of chairman and chief executive to replace Sir Stanley.
During the year, the company completed the ground reclamation process at
Norton Colliery in Stoke, with demolition of site buildings due to begin this
year. Win a big night A Staffordshire landlord has caused a stir
by offering the winner of a pub raffle a dinner date with a porn star. Dougie
Wilkinson - who runs the U-Bar in Cannock - says so far more than 1,400 tickets
have been snapped up. He says he has both a male and female porn star on standby
to suit a winner of either sex. Etruria to close? The Strategic
Rail Authority says it WILL take into account local views on the decision to close
the Etruria railway station in Stoke-on-Trent in September. Stoke-on-Trent City
Council plans to do its own research into the need for the station. The campaign
group Transport 2000 says it also opposes the plan. Saturday
