of Staffordshire? Staffordshire could soon get its own giant "landmark" statue
to rival that of the Angel of the North in Gateshead. Staffordshire County
Council's appointed a team of design consultants to create a huge piece of public
art on empty land next to the M6 Toll Road. The plan has been put
together with the encouragement of Cannock MP Tony Wright.

relative denied asylum in Stoke The brother-in-law of Saddam Hussein, Emad
Noures, is refused asylum in Britain after an immigration appeal court in Stoke-on-Trent

Police
appeal after teenage girls goes missing A 13-year-old girl has gone missing
in Stoke-on-Trent. Samantha Jane Pimlott was last seen in the Tunstall area at
around 2330 GMT on Wednesday. She is described as 5ft tall with dark hair and
was wearing a blue Nike jacket and black trousers.
Here's to the refs
Two East Staffordshire referees have been selected to run the line at the
Carling Cup Final. Roy Burton and Ray Gould both from Burton, will officiate at
the match between Middlesborough and Bolton at the end of this month. Roy and
Ray will be assistant referees at the match in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
Toll Road brings land price rise Four hundred jobs are to be created
at a new distribution centre near the M6 Toll Road. Power Europe is building the
thirty million pound facility near Cannock and has paid £340,000 per acre
for the site. It's believed that development land prices have tripled since the
toll road opened.
Port Vale appoint Foyle Port Vale legend Martin
Foyle is named as the club's new manager after Brian Horton leaves the club by

Police
injured in head-on crash Two police officers were among four people injured
in a head-on crash on a Staffordshire road. The incident happened on the A34 Walsall
Road in Cannock at about 1750 GMT on Thursday. A female police officer suffered
injuries to her neck and pelvis in the collision, while her passenger suffered
minor injuries. The driver and passenger of a Peugeot 307 car were also treated
for minor injuries in hospital and discharged

First junior ASBO for Staffs A fourteen year old Burton boy has become
the first juvenile in Staffordshire to be served with an anti-social behaviour
order. The police compiled a dossier of around 60 complaints made against the
teenager - including reports of assault, harrassment and indecent behaviour in
the Winshill area. Under the order the fourteen year-old faces being arrested
and put back before a court if he commits an offence.

escaped prisoner, 42 year old Isaac John Price, who is suspected of a series of
violent raids, remains on the run after a suspected sighting in Biddulph, Staffordshire.

Smuggled tobacco found More than half a million pounds of contraband tobacco
and cigarettes has been seized in a raid in East Staffordshire. Customs officers
and police jointly raided premises at the Bramshalls Industrial Estate near Uttoxeter.
One man has been charged with evasion of excise duty and the others, including
a forty nine year old Staffordshire man, have been bailed pending further investigation.

Rugeley road The Government has given its final approval for a major new
stretch of road in South Staffordshire. It says the second stage of the Rugeley
Eastern by-pass will divert traffic on the A51 out of Rugeley town centre. Funding
for the by-pass has now been increased to £17.5 million - up £11 million
from the initial plan.
Burton man gets life A Burton man's been
sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a father of two. Alan Halliday
was found dead at his home in Edward Street in Burton in July. Twenty nine
year old Mark Alexander Hough of Grange Street in Burton pleaded guilty to the
murder of Halliday, who was beaten and stabbed as he slept in his house on Edward
Street in Burton on July 5th last year. 19 year old David Smith, also of Grange
Street, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to three years at a young
offenders' institution. The court heard that Smith was present at the time of
the murder but didn't take part. Mr Halliday came to live in Burton in 1995
from Scotland and worked as a driver in the town.

in burning car Police are investigating the discovery of a body in a burning
car in woodland near to the German Cemetery on Cannock Chase at about 1500 GMT.
A police spokesman said: "The coroner has been informed and we are investigating
the incident."
