Local Music Scene

BBC Introducing The best undiscovered music from across the UK. BBC Introducing aims to showcase the cream of unsigned talent. Most local BBC radio stations have their own show, but BBC Radio Stoke's show is SUBCulture with Matt and Dave.

Unsigned Magazine is a quarterly zine run by Ev and Gaz. It's based in Staffordshire, covering the big old "alternative" spectrum from Indie to Metal and as the name suggests, they mainly focus on unsigned bands.

Onemusic BBC Radio One's guide to making music - everything you ever wanted to know about well, er, making music.

Redspot Enterprising folk who want to help talent in Stafford to shine, and hope to help put out a compilation CDs of local bands. Musicians should check this site out for local bands, gigs, links to resources.

UpStart Stoke
A great site that supports local bands. Whether you need some advice on how to take that difficult next step, getting gigs outside the area, how to attract management or even practical tips on how to set up your own record label - if you are serious about your music, UpStart Stoke can help.

Stoke Sounds Now in the form of a blog, this website has lots of reviews of bands from the local music scene.

Oatcake FM This Podcast features members of a rap community from the Stoke-on-Trent area.

The Sugarmill One of Stoke-on-Trent's best live music venues. Here you'll find everything you need to know about the latest bands they've got booked and up-to-date information about their weekly club nights in Hanley.

The Underground - Another fine club in Hanley that supports live music. Their website is a MySpace page with gig listings and prices.

GigJunkie (Sarah Thompson) is her name, and music photography is her trade. If you attend many local gigs, you've probably seen her at work.

Music Mania Independent Hanley music shop - which also sells a lot of tickets for local gigs. Tom runs an easy-to-browse local music section.

Stoke Rock Music Website dedicated to Stoke-On-Trent's live music and club scene - run by DJ Fresh.

The BitJam An event where with guests ranging from laptop performers to experimental bands jam.

Staffs Uni Vampire Society
They say: An alternative society for those who DARE to be different. This egroup is for people interested in the Vampire Society at Staffs Uni.

Net Goth
Net Goth has links to social network groups that have goth connections.

Stoke Gothic is no longer updated but it still has some useful information and links for the local goth scene.

Jim Hawkins' Sunday Rock Radio Show Across the Midlands every Sunday, from 6-8pm, on 94.6FM, 1503AM, and 96FM. It's good stuff - with classic to goth to neo-metal.

Clubbing

Global Groove The record shop that just knows its stuff - 200 yards outside Hanley city centre.

Stoke-On-Trent Street Culture Website run by DJ Fresh for local electronic-based music and hip hop culture

Jazz

Gumbles Jazz Club at Prince of Wales, Weston Rd, Stafford - 01785 259144 - with some of the top names in jazz every Thursday fortnight. It's the brainchild of Stafford-based Saxophonist Chris Gumble who also presents the BBC Radio Stoke Jazzbeat show.

Tamworth Jazz Club - rich, rich gig list, with a new gem of a gig every Wednesday. Mostly trad.

West Midlands Jazz Club International - holds gigs at the George Hotel, Lichfield. Programmes for the season, and tickets, from the Lichfield Tourist Information Centre - 01543 308209

Burton Jazz Club - at Marstons Social Club (next to the brewery in Shobnall Road Burton) - has been going a while, and keeps up the tradition of trad - every Thursday.

Stafford Jazz Society - old-fashioned jazz society with music-lovers in the majority, tho the Antique Jazz Band once described the crowd as "the audience of the decade"....

Jazz Club 90 is based at the Harp Hotel, Albrighton, Shropshire and draws its audience from across the West Midlands and Staffordshire as well as Shropshire. Mostly traditional bands - from as far as California and Australia on rather exceptional occasions! Admission is free to our Sunday lunchtime and Tuesday evening sessions but we do run a raffle and football card so it does cost you to get out!

The Stroke Comedy Club First Thursday of the Month at the George Hotel, Bird St, Lichfield with stand up from London and TV circuit comedians.

Blues

Dove Valley Blues & Roots Club is a live music venue based at Doveridge Village Club, just off the A50, one mile east of Uttoxeter. The Club's policy is to present original and innovative bands and musicians, roughly based around the folk blues and rock scene, so don't expect any tribute bands! Contact: 01889-566933

Youth & Community

Planet Sound Arts Planet Sound Community Arts is a not-for-profit company that aims to provide and develop the arts across the communities of the North Staffs and support the local artistic community.

Staffordshire Performing Arts - run by the county council, but don't let that put you off. These guys run competitions for the best high school band, musician of the year, Rock The Garrick, the "Popstars" and all sorts of arts things to get involved in.
