Mel
Hill - Jazz man Mel's show is best described as "cool".
His style is relaxed but studied - he likes to get the facts right! - but, as
he admits, there will always be a smile somewhere in the two hours. And
who's on Mel's playlist? First and foremost, the great players and singers.
And why not? Mel, a musician himself (trumpet to be exact) is not only enthused
by the history of jazz, but constantly stunned by the sheer achievement of the
greats - from Hoagy Carmichael to Bobby Hackett. Many grateful listeners to
BBC World Service and to BBC Radio 3 will also remember his profiles of some of
the great twentieth century figures in jazz.... so his opinions are backed up
with research. And then, there's the new As he travels a lot
out and about on the scene himself, playing in a number of bands, Mel is well
aware of the young talent out there - so, let's give youth its head, he says!
Finally - but not least - there's you There's a lively exchange
of information, not only from listeners using the messageboards, but also writing
direct to Mel - usually with gentle corrections, or updates to Mel's notes, but
also with suggestions for future tracks to be played on the show. "I
accept all corrections humbly," says Mel "... and never fail to be amazed
by the depth of knowledge and earnest research that listeners display!"
