I have recently returned from a trip to the UK where I was able
to buy at Sainsburys 5 large pots of Marmite. Imagine FIVE large pots. I would
like to thank all those wonderful people at the Marmite factory for doing such
a wonderful job. The quality taste and spreadworthyness have remained constant
through thick and thin through war and peace, through triumph and failure. It must
be a wonderful place to work! Are you paid in Marmite? I would love to work
there 24 hours a day! Good Luck to you all! John Clay Vilalba Sasserra

Our
Mate - Marmite.
I've lived in New Zealand for several years and almost moved back
to Blighty cos the only Marmite I could find was the Kiwi variety which believe
me is definitely 'Double YUK!!!' Then,I found 'Our Mate'-same as UK marmite
[including being packed in that silly shaped jar where the only way you can get
it all out is to stick your finger in and lick it]. Following this discovery
I have now decided that living in New Zealand is not so bad after all. Regards

Tried
Vegemite
I found another store closer to my house, Cost Plus/World Market,
which carries both Vegemite and Marmite. The flavor of Vegemite is quite different.
I have not tried Bovril; none of the stores out here carry it. Needless to
say, Marmite on rye toast remains my daily favorite! Philip J. Smith

An
American's Experience with Marmite
My fiancée and I vacationed in England a few years ago, where I
experienced my first sighting of Marmite. Here in America, you could lay a
safe bet that after asking 1,000 people if they even vaguely know what Marmite
is, you will get zero correct answers. Although it tickled my curiosity, after
returning to The States, I thought little more of it. Shortly after our trip,
my fiancée and I happened across a store in Long Grove, Illinois, (NW of Chicago)
called British Imports. Cadbury candies, mushy peas, crab spread, HB sauce, Yorkie
"Not for Girls!" tins, ginger beer, Marmite, and much more are all in stock. Among
things, I bought a 125g jar of Marmite for US$4.49, roughly £3 at the time. I
took it to work and added it to my "novelty items" on the shelf, alongside the
miniature London telephone booth, and the right-hand-drive, double-decker bus
with a Harrod's emblem. I know, I know... "How typical!"
Anyway, I cracked
open the jar of Marmite and could not believe the smell. WOW! That is positively
awful! I shared this novelty scent with others in the office, all of whom had
similar reactions. After trying it on toast, the only conclusion or "story" I
could conjure up was this.... Some British marketing geniuses got drunk on Guinness
one evening, and decided that instead of simply throwing out all that gunk at
the bottom of the stout vats, they could put it in jars, stick a schnazzy label
on it, and make a few extra quid by suckering the general public into buying it!
As the weeks went by, I couldn't help but "take a whiff" once in a while.
Once a day. A couple times a day. I have read that it is an acquired taste. I
have also read postings that you must be raised on it from early childhood to
like it. I recently tried it on toast again, where according to the jar it is
"delicious spread thinly on toast." Hmmm... Not bad. I guess I can see how people
might like it.
Fast forward a few more months to the present. Now, I am
spreading it on lightly buttered rye toast every morning, accompanied by a good
ol' cup of domestic Starbucks coffee. Sometimes I even skip the butter, but never
the Marmite. To all of the British marketing professionals whom I may have
offended, please accept my apologies! I never "forced" myself to eat it, and I
certainly caannot force myself to *like* something. I truly believe that it is
indeed possible to acquire a taste for Marmite. I can honestly say I am a Marmite

New
marmite website
Personally I can't stand the stuff, but there is a new marmite
website at http://www.marmite.com I think
they have put it up to coincide with a new TV ad. You can even download a screensaver
if you like that sort of thing, my wife has put it on our computer. Someone has
put a recipe for Marmite and Frosties sandwiches on there too, which sounds double
grim. Matt Law Ruislip

Having been weaned on the stuff the mearest whiff of marmite on
hot buttered toast and I am dribbling like Homer Simpson. My American cousins
in San Jose pile it on like clotted cream which is going a bit far and I tell
them it will burn their tastebuds away but they dont care they are always gagging
for it. Only an offshore island with bad weather could come up with something
as unique as Marmite. Oh and Twiglets,I almost forgot. You havn't had a taste
rush until you have licked out all the sticky marmity bits from the bottom of
a packet. Oooooooooh. Yes! Yes! Yes! David elloway Harrow

How can anyone claim that Staffordshire's greatest food is Marmite?
Most well known perhaps, but has the writer of the article not heard of oatcakes?!
Anyway, Marmite = horrible. Fact. Howard Alsager, Cheshire

What's
in a name...
I am both a Marmitophile, since I have an unusual affinity for
the stuff, and a Marmitophage, since I eat copious amounts of the stuff. Born
in Canada to 2 Brits, I've always loved it. I'd have to say that rather than buttered
toast, I think it's at it's peak in top of a buttered crumpet. Not to offend the
purists, but it goes great with peanut butter. It even makes a great taste paining
with honey or marmelade. OK, I'm nuts, but hey, chacun a son Marmite! Love it
or Hate it says it all! My College Roomate tried it once and renamed it "Bear****".
He never answered when I asked him how he knew it tasted the same, but he seemed
certain... :-) MultiEngine Washington DC USA

Charlotte Becker and Jim Thorpe, I was born and raised in pennsylvania
and I LOVE vegemite and plan to buy marmite to give it a try a.s.a.p.... (by the
way, are you journalists for the newspaper?) they contain a yeast base and such,
and vegemite is a savory, salty, delicious paste to put on buttered toast. there
is nothing like that stuff... yummmmmmmmmmmmm! luvs_her_vegemite wash
