kirahh - Hello Joyce, could you please say what you think it is in Ellen McArthur's chart that makes her so special? Thanks :-)

Joyce Hopewell - Hi Kirahh. Isn't Ellen fantastic! A very special person, as you say. I don't know her time of birth, but I've found out her date of birth. Born on 8.7.1976, she has not only the Sun but Mercury and Venus in the water sign of Cancer, which suggests that her home base is very important for her. But with her Moon conjunct ( that means "very close to" in astrospeak) Neptune in Sagittarius, this gives her not only an adventurous questing spirit, but a st
rong urge to fulfil her dreams. She will be 29 this year, and 29 to 30 can be a significant age in people's lives. If I knew her time of birth I could look at her chart

Maggie - Hi Joyce I am very interested in gem stones - my star sign is Pisces and Aquamarine and Moonstone are my designated stones - do they have any relevance to astrology ?

Joyce Hopewell - Hi Maggie. There are gemstones associated with each of the Zodiac Signs, and you're right about Aquamarine & Moonstone being two of them, along with Pearl, Opal and Diamond, to mention just a few more for your Sign. Aquamarine & Moonstone are both well attuned to the "watery" and emotional/feeling nature of Pisces and its ruling planet, Neptune. As Neptune represents our capacity to love and accept unconditionally, this may be a quality that you could awake and activate in yourself - and wearing the appropriate gemstones might help. Get yourself a good gemstone book and bone up on this for more info. Hope that helps! Joyce

Hi Joyce. I'm not very knowledgeable about astrology. Given that the forces of the planets interact, how much effect will the newly discovered planet have on astrological readings ? Cheers.

Joyce Hopewell - Hello Simba. I assume you mean Sedna when you speak about the newly discovered planet? News was announced by astronomers last March of its discovery. NASA apparently endorsed this, but its validity as a planet is questioned by scientists. It was described in the press as "a lump of icy rock the size of a European country" - but which one was not stated, so it could be very large, or very small (think of Andorra!). It takes 10,500 years to complete an orbit of the Sun, compared with Pluto, the outermost planet of the solar system, which takes 248 years - so that may help put it into perspective for you. As to whether it might have any effect astrologically, I personally think it's way too soon to say - it's only been known to us for 11 months! I would not consider using it in my charts - astrological psychology keeps things simple and straightforward, using techniques based on empirical research.
For your own interest, you may like to find out more about the mythology of Sedna, who was an Inuit godess who created the sea creatures of the Arctic. It's a fascinating story!

Hello Joyce. Could you please tell me what it means when the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars? Cheers.

Joyce Hopewell - I definitely feel a song coming on.....!! Your question takes me right back to the 70's when the cast of "Hair" not only took off their clothes, but invited the audience to join them on stage and dance (fully clothed!) at the end of the performance. And that is exactly what I did when I saw the show at the Liverpool Empire!
Seriously - I'd have to see the chart concerned to know exactly HOW Jupiter was aligning with Mars. It could suggest a lot of "up and at 'em" energy but how this would be expressed would depend upon many other factors. Moon in the 7th House? Listen in to my new series on the Houses (areas of life experience) to find out more about these. With my own Moon in the 7th House of my chart, which is the area of life where we make contact with others, I have a fantastic tool for meeting people, talking to them and getting to understand
how they feel. Does that help? Joyce

Lee - Hi Joyce, I sometimes read my stars in the paper and they never seem to make any sense or relate to my life! I want to believe them but I think I'm too cynical - can you help me believe?!

Joyce Hopewell - Hello Lee. Reading stars in the paper is a bit of fun, best taken tongue in cheek! They are written in a very general way and do not apply to specific individuals - and that would explain why they don't make sense to you or relate to your life. You're not being cynical - you're being realistic! If you want to have a professional chart reading, go to a professional astrologer, or learn about astrology & how to read a chart yourself. If you look at my website you will find details of how to do this as well as links to other sites promoting the kind of astrology available beyond the newspaper columns. Astrology is not a belief system, it's a tool. Welcome to the world of real astrology....!

Jim Clarke - Hello Joyce. I wonder if you can help me with a dilemma. My birthday is just before Christmas and I always spend it trying not to feel depressed by the time of year and guilty for asking anyone to celebrate it with me, at a time of year when most of us would rather be at home. I'm thinking of moving it by 6 months and ignoring the December date altogether, but... Would this have implications for my zodiac? If so, could this have implications for my personality?

Joyce Hopewell - Hello Jim. From the sound of your message you are a Sagittarian and I'm beginning to wonder if your Sagittarian optimism and sense of fun and adventure has disappeared altogether beneath the weight of the Christmas season!
Perhaps you might ask yourself if you would really want to be masquerading as a Cancerian, which is what you will do if you "change" your birth date to July. This is unlikely to make any difference as you will always KNOW when your real birthday is, and you will always be a Sagittarian! Of course, there is nothing to stop you doing this & having your celebration in the summer.
After all, the Queen has a real and an official birthday, and these are on quite different dates and in different Signs! Christmas and the lead up to it can be stressful, and if you feel guilty about asking people to celebrate with you maybe the thing to do is to take yourself off for the day of your birthday & do something you would really like, just for yourself - turn it into a day of quality time for you. Give yourself this birthday "gift".
None of us can change our birth chart, but we can change ourselves and our attitude towards those things in our lives that are not right. Sagittarians love to travel, are open and enquiring, with a good sense of humour and are usually on a quest for wisdom and understanding - your December birthday has a lot going for it! Joyce.

grovekid - Hi Joyce... My birthday falls on December 21st. Some astrologers say I am a Sagitarius and some put me in Capricorn... Why do they vary?, and could you settle the argument for me once and for all and tell me which I am?...

Joyce Hopewell - Hello there. You are well & truly on the cusp between Sagittarius and Capricorn, and it's always a bit of an irritating puzzle to know which Sign you were born under for cuspal birthdates. Sun Sign columns are very general and a professional astrologer will always be able to offer you more detail, specific to you and only you! If you know the time you were born, plus the year, I can give you the correct answer! Why not call into Tim's programme next Wednesday 26th at 4pm, when I'll be in the studio. All

Mardy - I read my stars in the paper but really only for fun. I am interested though in whether you think it's dangerous that astrologers can advise people on quite sensitive issues at times without knowing anything about them. Would you prefer to give readings on a one to one basis?

Joyce Hopewell - I always give readings on a one-to-one basis and my aim is to help the person make their own decision, based on the discussion we have together using their chart and the current issues of importance in their life. There is usually something important going on in people's lives when they consult an astrologer so it's vital that the astrologer has the right kind of training to back them up to enable them to work with people in this way.
I'm a qualified astrological counsellor and a Fellow of the Association of Professional Astrologers International, and have been working professionally with clients for 20 years. In addition to my astrological training I've also had training in counselling and psychology. Reading your stars in the paper can be fun - I sometimes read mine to see what media astrologers have to say about my Sun Sign! - but what they say is limited because they're only looking at the 12 Zodiac Signs.
And we are all, individually, so much more than just our Sun Sign. So if you look at your stars in the paper, bear this in mind - and if you want a proper, detailed look at your chart, consult a qualified professional astrologer or astrological counsellor. Hope this helps
