FAMILY
HISTORY
I am trying to research the history of my former home
in Longton .. The address is.151 High street Longton. It is at present
empty and boarded up as many more are in this area.
My family lived there from 1870 until 1948, Their name was WARD. I
was born here and spent my early years at 151 High street, at this
period it was known as High street post office.
my home was one of three shops, 153 next door was also occupied by
the WARD family in the late 1800s/1900s.
It was then a Mens hairdresser/ newsagent.
I have reason to believe it was originally a Chapel I have family
photos of it in the late 1800s when my family were Tailors, in the
early 1900s it changed to a post office. I would like to know when
it was first built and if there are any old pictures/history ,pre-1870,
also "did it have a name". If any one could help me with this request
I should be very greatful for any help. thank you ..........

There was a book written on this.
The Sentinel also did an article some time back in the way we were.
You could also ring the police museum at Staffordshire Police HQ -
the curator is a good place to start.
The chauffeaur done it - not the gardener - in pursuit of theft. The
year I think was 1954.

For Jill Cartlidge, Stoke-on-Trent. I have seen an
old photograph of The Queen's Hotel at Basford looking from Etruria
Road down the bank towards Hanley and there is a lantern from that
view, at the entrance to The Queens.

Barlaston
Murder
Hi.I was wondering if anyone had any info on a murder
that took place in a barlaston sometime in the far past. I roughly
know what happened.
The gardener killed the lady of the Wedgwood Memorial college by hitting
her over the head with a spade. And his ghost is s'posed to haunt
the college.
Now, i've searched every where on the net for the full story but i've
found nothing. So if anyone could give me a link to story the story
i would apprieciate it. Thanks.

is know known as bentliee working mens club. unable to tell you about
the owners becasue there has been alot of owners.

Road
We have for ages tried to find a picture of the back
entry that leads to the Queen hotel at Basford in Stoke on Trent.
if we can find a picture with a lamp on(it's some years ago)the council
will have to put us a new lamp in but we have to have prove there
was one can anyone help?

I am writing to you in desperation.
I have two tiles in a set by Josiah Wedgwood and sons etruria. They
are blue and depict the professions, two on each tile.( I have the
army, the Church, medicine and the law) I desperately need to find
images of the rest of the set as I have commissioned a stained glass
window with these images on ( I am a Wedgwood fan and thought it would
be a fitting tribute for my front door).
I thought it would be easy to look them up in a back catalogue but
I can't find them anywhere. The window is already started and I don't
know where to look next. Please help. Any suggestions would be useful.

TALKE
OF THE HILL MOTOR AND TRANSPORT CO
I am researching the Smith family of Kidsgrove who
in 1908 owned the Talke of the Hill Motor and Transport Co. at Talke
crossroads, which later became Smith's garage's opposite that of the
Paces.
Has anyone by any chance got any photographs, or has information on
the Smith family businesses which also included Grocery shops in Heathcote
Street, Kidsgrove.

Family tree
I am at present doing the family tree on my fathers
side of the family. My g/grandfather was Frederic Bean his wifes name
was Charlotte Sammons they came to Australia about 1881.
Frederic's father was Emanuel Bean. He lived in Rugeley and was a
game keeper. I was wondering if there are any relatives still living
in England so i can find more about the family .
My Father is still living and has just turned 90. I hope someone may

we found it non existant. It was near Butterhill on the way out to

Holy Austin Rock is described in an old novel, 'Bladys
of the Stewponey' written in 1897, but set in 1790, when Holy Austin
himself was alive.
I run a small press, Praxis Books, and am shortly to reissue this
exciting story. The author is Sabine Baring-Gould, who wrote 30 novels
and many other books about all sorts of subjects.

When you talk about Hugh Bourne (1772-1852), co-founder
of the Primitive Methodists does anyone know anything of his offspring
? There was a person of the same name living in the Hollins Farm,
Talke at the end of the 19th century, would this have been a grandson
?
Talke with Leek and Macclesfield formed the stronghold triangle of
Primitive Methodism in the area. Is it possible Hugh Bourne purchased
property around the traingle to aid him in his long circuit of preaching
and religious activity ?

Stoke
on Trent Then and now.
I am a former resident of Stoke on Trent, born in Chesterton
Jan. 1954 living and growing up in Talke Pits until my late folks
migrated to Aus. in 1968.
I have many fond memories of growing up there and then moving to Aus.
Even now aged 49 I still call that home, and Aus is the place I choose
to live having two children born here.
I went to school at St Saviours primary school, and Sir David Mitchel
school in Buttlane, then Clough Hall Comprehensive until moving to
Aus in 1968.
Although life was not a bed of roses I have many fond memories of
growing up, probably because life back then was at a more leisurely
pace in comparison to the hectic lifestyle today. I remember as if
it were yesterday the family home in Audley Road Talke Pits, and walking
the five miles to the bus stop to catch the bus to school. The winters
where it was fine in the morning leaving for school, and then the
snow starting after lunch, and having to walk home because the bus
was un! able to go up coal pit hill because of the snow on the road,
and the great delight the next morning of being snowed in bcause the
snow was up to the second storey window, of digging out the snow bound
cars, and walking attop the drifted snow.
Something rarely seen hear in Aus. And all the memories of the times
at school in year 3M back in 1968 while going to Clough Hall Comprehensive
. Anyone still out there that went to Clough Hall in that year ?

Genealogy
A friend and I are doing genealogy. We think we've
traced her family to Staffordshire.
Need help in locating the following families, James Ambrose Lockett,
John Robinson (who reportedly was married to Margaret Preston c. 1830s)
John and Margaret had a son, William.
William immigrated to the United States in c. 1850s.
We believe James Ambrose Lockett, wife Grace Sargent, and the children
including Julia Ann came to the United States of America in the 1840s.
Can anyone assist us?

Tuscan tea cups>>
During the 1960s, my mother, a native of Glasgow, who
had 'emigrated to Southern England', walked into a tiny shop in Cheam
and saw, what she beleved to be, the most elegant set of coffee cups
and saucers she had ever seen.
There was also a coffee pot and smaller pot.
The gentleman in the shop priced the coffee set at 2 guineas but his
wife who had come into the shop as he was wrapping the china seemed
apparently annoyed and muttered something about the wrong price.
My mother cherished this china until her death in 1989 when the set
was passed to me. The manufacturer's mark on the coffee pot is "Tuscan
China" with a crown on wings underneath. Below this mark there is
a stamp "Made in England B.C.M./Tuscan. The coffee cup has the additional
word "Plant".
I understand Susie Cooper Ltd merged with RH & SL Plant in 1961 and
I wondered if anyone could tell me if the design - which I am told
is called "Deutsche Blummen" (spelling may be incorrect) - could have
been one of Susie Cooper's and, what year might they have been produced.
The coffee cups are very small and look like little cans. The colours
are cream backgound, green and black handles, and the flowers are
blue, pink, yellow and lilac.

Hi, My father is looking for family that lived at 1
Whieldon road, Mt. Pleasant, District of Stoke upon Trent, sub district
of fenton, county of stafford.
My grandfather, alfred was born in 1901 and had 13 brothers and sisters,
six came to canada and these are the ones we wish to find out about
May, Joseph, Arthur, Samuel. Lily Albert, Edith, and Rose.
We do not know too much about them, and information would be very
helpful.

Chapel Restoration
If the people of Stoke-on-Trent really want to see
this beautiful building restored to its former glory, they should
keep an eye out for 'Restoration', the BBCs 'Pop Idol' for buildings.
This series is due to be shown on BBC2 in late summer and promises
to restore a building voted for by viewers.
Bethesda Chapel is already a candidate and its possible residents
of the city could generate some much-needed positive publicity (and
funds for one of its outstanding buildings) with no more than their
TV and telephone to hand. Look out for the series and get voting!

I am originally from Smethwick in the West Midlands.
Although I have lived in beautiful Cheltenham for 44 years I find
I still miss my Black Country connections.
I chanced accidentally on your site and was intrigued that someone
had asked the question "what is Indian Brandy"
I recall as a young girl being given this (obtained from our local
corner shop) when I had pains in my tummy. So far as I recall, it
worked fine.
I would be very pleased to know if anyone replied to this query, the
answer would resolve a question I have held about Indian Brandy for

I am enquiring if a club in Stoke-On-Trent still stands.
I lived in Stoke 30 Years ago and my mom used to work in a club called Ubberly
& Bentelee Workingmans Club (apologises if the spelling is incorrect).
I believe the road it was on was called Ailsbury Road. (Again, apologises
if the spelling is incorrect).
I also believe that the Manager/President of the club was named Ron
Barlow. Another name I have been given is Sam Lees
The reason why I'm asking, is that I am trying to track down some
people who used to go there. If this Club does still stand, would
you be able to give me any details you have. Then I can make plans

Information about my family history>>
I came to England in 1948 ,with the U.S. AirForce
for the Berlin Airlift. I did not know that I would be marrying one
of your English Rose daughters. Our first daughter was born in a house
on George St, Whitchurch.
I am now 71 years old and I lost my wife a few years ago due to an
illness. And since we had traveled all over the world being in the
service for 20 years, my children never really knew their roots.
Since loosing my wife I have taken up researching my family history.
Believe it or not I have just found out that my roots go back to the
Cheadle Hulme area. And to think i was stationed at Warrington back
in the 40's. Of course I wasn't interested in genealogy then. So I
took up the hobby of researching the family tree. Not just for me
but for my family as well to leave them with some knowledge of their
roots.
My problem is that I wanted to get the history also of Holmes Chapel
and cannot seem to find any thing on the history of that area. Also
my daughters wanted me to find any thing on their grandfather a George
Farr who was born 15 June 1897 and had died in 1967 at Whitchurch.
I have researched every avenue that i knew and it seems like he was
a ghost. I can't even find a relative of his. My wife never knew neither.
He may have been an adopted child,so no one knows about that.
I know I have babbled on but I need your help. I would like to write
an ending to these search's before I get to old and not be able to
finish.
I thank you for any help you could render and my girls would also
appreciate it. Thank you again,

Memories
of RAF Cranage
I have been reading the reminiscences on your site.
I live in Cheshire, close to RAF Cranage. Squadron 96 flew from there,
as the sole aerial defence of Liverpool during the Blitz (1941) before
moving to Wrexham.
I am trying to have the remaining site scheduled as an 'ancient monument' .
English Heritage is proving resistant to this. Will you help to save
it? Much more information can be read on the web
page which I have set up.
We should value our heritage - as contributors to your site obviously
do.
Young men from right across the world flew from RAF Cranage - Canada,
Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Czechoslovakia, France, South Africa.
Today it looks insignificant enough, but during the war, it was very
important. Its memory still should be important.
If any of your contributors can help me with more information, about
RAF Cranage or about the Vickers Armstrong 'shadow factory' close
by in Byley, which assembled Wellington Bombers - shadowing the factory
at Broughton/RAF Hawarden, I would love to hear from them..

called the Bournes to Ednersor St, Chesterton (or Wolstanton; something
to do with the adminstrative district at the time). I checked on streetmap.co.uk
but it didn't show. Any idea where it is / was. I know the area vaguely

The
Great Escape Memorial Project
I have recently taken up the task of promotion and
publicising T h e G r e a t E s c a p e M e m o r i a l P r o j e
c t, a project to create a living reminder of events that took place
in 1944 nearly 60 years ago, and forever immortalised in the film
of the same name.
The efforts of the committee are directed at reactivating the now
barren landscape where The Great Escape took place. It is hoped that
doing so will rekindle the memory of this extraordinary event.
It will also allow for the education of new visitors by encouraging
them to experience the site and consequently the story for themselves.
we know the names of the soldiers and airmen involved, but don't always
know where they came from... can anyone help us with more information
