Former England footballer Nigel Clough was the guest of honour at a Presentation evening to celebrate the achievements of a £1.9 million bid to get Staffordshire youngsters serious about sport.

Sport Across Staffordshire is a partnership consisting of all nine local authorities, Staffordshire Local Education Authority, Staffordshire University and sports governing bodies who are working together to develop sport.

To date the Partnership has attracted £1.9 million pounds from the National Lottery and other sources to deliver the Active Sports Programme in Athletics, Cricket, Girls Football, Hockey, Rugby Union, Swimming and Tennis.

The Sport Across Staffordshire partnership was launched in September 2001 and so far, more than 3,000 young people and 105 sports coaches have been recruited to the programme which encourages school children to play more cricket, girl's football, rugby and tennis.

Nigel Clough, the ex-England player, now manager of Burton Albion FC, delivered the annual report to representatives from the Partnership at the presentation evening at the Kingston Centre, in Stafford.

Other speakers included Jenny Cordon from Holden Lane High School in Stoke on Trent, which is a designated a specialist sports college, and Keeley Fathers, who is girls rugby head coach for the county.

Duncan Cowie, Chair of the Sport Across Staffordshire said he was delighted with progress achieved to date:

quote Since the launch of the Active Sports programme in September 2001, there has been a significant number of coaching and competitive opportunities provided across the Partnership area.
Not only have our young people benefited, but also coaches, officials volunteers and sports clubs. The success of the programme is testimony to the efforts of all partners involved. quote

Nigel Clough also announced the official launch of the Sport Across Staffordshire website(see web links) which includes essential information on coaching courses being held throughout Staffordshire as well as information for coaches and sports clubs who are interested on getting a piece of the action.
