Tommy, who plans to work as a legal executive, has just graduated from the University's Law School.

He shared his celebrations with human rights lawyer Imran Khan, who received an honorary degree from the University on the same day.

Tommy said he was delighted to meet Imran Khan and equally thrilled that Chief Inspector Simon Humphreys, who was Tommy's mentor under a national scheme backed by Staffordshire University, was able to attend the graduation ceremony.

As part of the mentoring scheme, Tommy was placed at Staffordshire Police headquarters in Stafford for six months.

The aim of the scheme is to encourage ethnic minority students to overcome recruitment barriers.

Under the initiative Afro-Caribbean and Asian students are linked up with professional people for six months to help develop their personal and professional skills.

quote I saw a different side of police work while on my placement and I now have a greater understanding of the service. It has been a very rewarding experience. quote
Tommy Offe-Amoyaw

Tommy was named Staffordshire University"s Mentee of the Year and received a certificate at a special presentation evening.

He praised the support and guidance he had received from his mentor Chief Inspector Humphreys, formerly of Staffordshire Police's Performance Development Team (PDT) but now of North Wales Police.

Chief Inspector Humphreys was named Mentor of the Year.

quote This partnership and working with Simon has definitely changed me for the better. For example, I am now much more confident in how I communicate with others.

It's totally changed my life coming to Staffordshire University; it's the best move I've ever made.

And today has been fantastic, there is a real sense of celebration but it's also just the beginning.

This is chapter one in my life and now I'm ready to take the next step and to make a contribution to my community quote
