15/9/02..
Las Vegas
The
fire crews who died on 9/11 are being commemorated still.... a boat
is sailing down the Hudson from Manhattan to New Jersey, with all
the victims' names.
The fire crews are the ones that people here most respect for here.
Las Vegas very warm, being out in the desert. We arrive at 6.30pm,
and it's 97 degrees!
The casinos are massive complexes too, with shopping malls in them(!)......
on theme lines, like circuses or New York New York.
Caesar's Palace is the biggest. They're not as tacky as I though,
and exceed my expectations.
The strip is SIX MILES long. We walk four of them - and I'm tired
out, and catch a taxi back.
Kalikoko Town. It's an old Western town recreated - everybody dressed
up like it's the Wild West, and gunfights too in character. Fun, but
it's really too hot!

Las
Vegas
Day 2
Las Vegas is all about shopping-gambling-sunbathing-Grand canyon.
We go to the Grand Canyon in a helicopter... it's so high, I'm feeling
a little sick, then we land right in the middle and have a picnic!
A picnic in one of The Wonders of The World.
When we go back, we finish the rest of the strip, and eat in a restaurant
on the top floor of our hotel. It's pretty high too, so again, I'm
again a bit dizzy with it.....

Mama's Lakes
Left Las Vegas.
On the TV they have more pictures from New York. On Brooklyn Bridge
they're selling T-shirts and stuff - and they hope to make the area
a permanent memorial.
Still so many flags flying. And banners - reading United We Stand
and feelings like that.
Mama's Lakes. They're a bit like our Lake District... but 8,000 feet
up, so chilly. Picturesque - but cold.
18/9/02..
Yosemite
National Park
... and we go round it on bikes! The scenery is fantastic... just
stretches of meadows and hills. So green... but now... very hot!
California Gold village. It's an old-time mining-town with
just 4000 residents, so as you can guess, everybody knows each other.
(It's called gold because the grass is yellow, which I didn't
know till I got there).
It's nice, but.... not really worth the effort.
19/9/02..
Carmel
It's very cool on the coast-line of California - which surprised me.
Not like the Californian desert at all.
Saw bubba-gump shrimp (remember the film Forrest Gump?)
It's a 17-mile drive down to Carmel, and you have to pay to go on
the road, because it's Millionaires' Row - all the mansions along
here cost around £10 million apiece - Tiger Woods lives here.
But the town , like you'd guess, is all for older people. So I just
sat in the park, and enjoyed the scenery.

San Francisco Day 2
My last two days were spent in San Francisco, which is a lovely city
- and contrary to popular belief, it is quite warm in the city centre.
We spent around two hours shopping in the afternoon - San Francisco
has all the major department stores in one area. There's Macy's, Tiffany's,
Levi's, Gorgio Armani, Burberry and loads, loads more.
We then took a brief tour of the city - going to Twin Peaks and looking
down over San Francisco - excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge
and Alcatraz.
That evening we went to China Town and took a cable car (which is
an experience and a half!!). Some of the streets are almost vertical,
which can make it feel like a rollercoaster at times.
China Town is very similar to China Town in Manchester - and quite
busy at night.

San Francisco Day 2
The last full day we had to ourselves, so managed a lie in.
We spent the morning at Alcatraz.
Today was so different - quite cold and very foggy over Alcatraz,
which makes it really eerie.
A coat is an excellent idea if your visiting Alcatraz. The actual
prison itself is almost like a museum and its really hard to imagine
that some of the most hardened criminals were actually housed there.
This evening we went on a tour of San Fransisco by night and had a
meal by the Wharf. We went for drinks in the Fairmont hotel (home
to the rich and famous - when they visit. Sean Connery demanded to
stay there whilst filming The Rock!).
We took in a lovely view of the San Fransisco skyline - with a slight
fog over it - absoutely outstanding.

Home time
We left for the airport at 8.00am this morning and I have vowed to
return - and spend a little more time here next time.
This trip has truely been a wonderful and once in a lifetime experience,
that I will treasure forever.
