Praise and GrumbleYou are in: Stoke & Staffordshire > Radio Stoke > Praise and Grumble > Stone Hockey Club ![]() Photo courtesy of Staffs Newsletter Stone Hockey Clubby Tom Boulton Stone Hockey Club Men's first team are looking to establish themselves in Midlands Division One after being promoted from the West Midlands Premier League last year. Midfielder Tom Boulton reflects on the club's recent progress and future plans. Stone had an impressive campaign last season with skipper Jon Allchin instilling in us an ethos of free flowing attacking hockey. We were particularly threatening when attacking at pace on the counter attack and this tactic served us well throughout the season. The experienced partnership up front between Jon Allchin and Laurence Bassett contributed over 60 goals and was key to the team's success. Player of the season Alex Mase showed great fight and energy in the centre of midfield. ![]() Photo courtesy of Staffs Newsletter I was pleased with my first season getting 13 goals in the league - and along with other new recruits like Craig Spooner felt I settled into the team well. Spooner slotted into central defence, alongside the assured Matt Holmes, and his strength and composure on the ball contributed to us having one of the best defensive records in the league. Goalkeeper Mark Azram had an outstanding season in goal and the Platt brothers, Jon and Al, showed impressive commitment in midfield, contributing over 20 goals between them. Tough StartSince being promoted Stone have had a tough start in Midlands Division One. In a thrilling opening day encounter we went 3-0 up against Worcester. New player Elliot Bishton made an instant impact by scoring one goal and creating another. ![]() Photo courtesy of Staffs Newsletter At 3-0 we should have been in a commanding position but our passing deserted us in the second half and we were unable to keep possession which led to a constant wave of Worcester attacks. Worcester completed their amazing come back from the penalty spot in the final minutes to win 4-3. However, we were encouraged by a first half performance, that bodes well for the season ahead. Get involvedStone have four men's teams, a veteran's team, three women's teams and a thriving junior section run by the excellent Geoff Millman. He's been a tremendous servant to the club for many years and must surely be a candidate for the Sports Unsung Hero award as a result of the magnificent coaching work he does with young players.
