Motown 50th

The Tamla Motown record label, based in Detroit USA and famous for its soul music output, is fifty years old in 2009. How could we celebrate?

The question of appropriate birthday celebrations set the listeners of Mary Fox's soul music show to thinking.  Here are just a few of their suggestions!
And if you have others, please use the form at the bottom of this page to make your comment…

Your Suggestions

OB
Mary, your request for a tribute to Motown got me thinking.
I went down the road of special stamps, sculptures, monuments etc, would loved to have sat in the "snake pit", would have give almost anything to have been on the front row watching and listening to Marvin and Tammi singing 2 can have a party for the first time and loads of other Motown related stuff.
BUT, my best idea was so simple and I would like to know what you and our soul family think of it....... Motown has given so so much to us, why don't we give something BACK...What we soulies could do is make a recording of our own and send THEM a record!!! something on the lines of Arthur Conley's SWEET SOUL MUSIC, think of the lyrics, Lou Rawls, Sam n Dave, Wilson Picket, Otis Redding and James Brown.
If over 1,000 went to the audition of the "soulie?" film at the Kings hall in Stoke then surely there are enough soulies to write the lyrics to a song and enough to compose the music and plenty to sing it, between us all we could DO THIS and GIVE SOMETHING BACK!!!! This would be unique and a tribute to them from US. If anyone thinks this is like an X factor thing, well it isn't because we would be doing it for someone else, not for ourselves, but let's say for example there were a few songs that were "reet good" then maybe a CD could be made?  ..just a thought.
Would love for feedback on this, negative or positive, EVERYBODY'S opinion counts. Cheers Obxx

Why not name all the major buildings and roads and airport in Detroit after Motown artists, such as Stevie Wonder Airport? – from Ian Edwards

My tribute to Motown is simply a big thank you to the early day artists.  They were the success of the label; if they had flopped you would be sitting at home, (glass in hand?) listening to someone else on the wireless – and so would we!  It was Baby Love that first got me hooked – from Phil in Hanley

How about USA (or GB even) issuing commemorative stamps or coins to celebrate 50years of Motown – from Trevor in Crewe

Just been thinking – maybe to commemorate 50 years we should erect a 50-foot replica of the Torch icon just off the A500 at Tunstall for all to see as they pass through – from Mick.

I would like to see Motown artists on collectors Wedgwood plates; would help Stoke as well! – from Stubbo in Wolverhampton

Where would us soul lovers be without Motown. Classic music and super star artists

RAY JAY (OLD WHEELER & TORCHER)
Hi Mary !I would definately go with the TORCH commemoration idea we rally should have a physical commemoration of this massive historical venue. also we should GIVE SPECIAL remembrance to artists such as Edwin Star who made their second home in the UK and gave us so much.

Hi Mary, I think OB's request for a tribute to Motown is a Brilliant Idea! And to give something back to them for the 50 years of pleasure that they have given to us all, So what do we do?? My Idea was on the same lines as Mr Berry Gordy Jr. And what he did to commemorate "Dave Godin's visit to "Hitville USA" in 1966 for The Tamla Motown Appreciation Society" who Berry himself and alot of the Motown Artists like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations, Stevie Wonder....and all the gang introduced themselfs with their records playing in the background on the DEMO's!! They all say hello to us! And thank us for listening and buying their records! And how they are looking forward to seeing us all, When they visit the UK. I think it would be Fantastic to deliver it back to him (Berry Gordy) in the same format as he gave it to us, 43 years ago!! I think that Berry would be Honoured and Flattered at our knowledge and respect for him and his Great Legenery Motown Artists!! Mary I would like you to open the CD and mix it for us (I KNOW YOU WOULD DO A BRILLIANT JOB OF IT) And you have got the Best voice, and then followed by Stokes "MAIN MAN" OB John O' Brien and then who ever comes on next? and so on!! 10/20 or more thats up to you!! I do think it is the Best and the Easiest way of doing it!! But that is only my opinion, and I know there is a lot of talent out there Mary who listens to your show, with their own Idea's and some of the Lads have written their own songs!! So we should have plenty to go at Mary. PS Mary I have got one of Original Demo's myself which Dave Godin gave to me years ago and I was lucky enough to of had it signed at the "Funk Brothers" Concert by BIG "Jack Ashford" and the Late "Joe Hunter" a week before he sadly died. Best Regards to you all. Lets Hope We Can Get It On? Lets Do it soon for my two Favorite Tamla Motown Artists the late Great "DAVID RUFFIN" and "MARVIN GAYE" Thanks. Pete Roberts xx.
