Stone Ramblers have launched a new book, 'Stone Circles'. It's a guide to some 20 plus walks around Stone in mid-Staffordshire. Gerald Gittens, a Stone Rambler himself, tells us more...
Stone Ramblers have previously written a short book, “Walks around Stone”, with circular walks starting either in Stone or at Downs Banks.
It now seemed appropriate to produce a follow-on with circular walks from the villages surrounding Stone, finishing with a grand 'Challenge Walk' joining them all together - hence the title - Stone Circles.
I had a vision that more people should enjoy the Staffordshire paths around Stone which our walking group already enjoys, and, as a by-product, improve their health as a result of the gentle exercise.
Stone Ramblers are really into helping people to enjoy walking, one of the best ways to improve your general health, and every Tuesday we take groups on short healthy walks as part of the British Heart Foundation Initiative (see www.stoneramblers.com).
The book is designed to help such people and, of course, any other walkers to explore the local paths. It has been produced as a quality product in an exciting and attractive easy to use format at a very modest price. This was made possible by the financial support of local Borough, Town and Parish Councils.
The theme through the book is enjoying walking, taking advantage of the local hostelries and being a little fitter at the end. The walks are designed to provide a challenge for individuals and hopefully families to gradually increase the distances they can walk starting as short as 1 mile.
In addition we have created the Stone Circles Challenge Walk which follows a route of 36 miles in a circle around Stone. This can be broken down into much shorter stages by using the waypoints indicated in the route.
What a challenge for any person or family to undertake, with the objective of improving your general well being!
How to find amenities
Full guidance is provided for walkers about local buses, refreshments and outdoor shops. All walks can be followed without the aid of a map, but a little knowledge of Ordnance Survey maps will enhance your experience and encourage you to explore other paths in the area.
Stone Circles is priced at a recommended retail price of £3.50 and can be obtained from: Webberley's and Hi Peak Leisure in Hanley; Stone Library; Wikijum in Stone High St; Outdoor Pursuits Coop, Radford St Stone; Map Kiosk, 160 Marston Rd Stafford (01785 241 010); Stone Ramblers c/o 1 Vanity Close, Oulton, Stone, ST 15 8TZ.
