Shriek in Leek!

Bill Cawley knows and loves Leek like the back of his hand. He knows the nooks and crannies where the town's ghosts lurk too! Here he explains to us why he loves doing his Ghost Walks, which show the spooky side of Leek

Recently Leek celebrated its 800th birthday - and the character of the town and its history makes it full of ghoulish byways and ghastly highways!

Just some of the great ghostly stories of the “Queen of the Moorlands” include:
° The Witch of Getliffe Yard - a story which includes a hot oatcake and a scalded cat!
° The fate of John Nadin and the last hanging in Leek.
° The ghostly nun of the 19th century convent in Leek.
° The spirit of the Springer spaniel and how its presence is still felt in a pub in Leek today.

There is even a pub in the town that was “ exorcised”, during a ceremony just thirty years ago.

But there are famous people who passed this way too - including Bonnie Prince Charlie, Oscar Wilde, William Morris, JRR Tolkein - and an 1895 Ladies Football team who were pioneer Suffragettes!
Who could we forget them?

Walks

I've been in love with Leek for many years and I'm glad to say served the townspeople in a public capacity - so, without boasting, I've yet to be stumped on a local question (encyclopaedic knowledge y' know, even extending to my appearances on Mastermind and University Challenge...).
The history of the town and its history is my passion, as readers of my articles in local newspapers will know.

So no wonder I get such a kick out of doing the ghost walks.
If you want to find out more about them, please e-mail me at:     williamcawley55@btinternet.com.

By the way, I would also like to hear from people who have other ghost stories about Leek!

I have heard of a ghost at brough park but its a horseman. It was a story told to me by my grandfather many years ago. I also used to work at sunseeker travel agents on sheepmarket in leek, when I was a teenager. One night when I was cleaning there on my own I heard only what I can describe as a dog walking on the wooden floor boards on the level above. I knew I was in there alone. It was very scary and still gives me goosebumbs when I think about it!!
