Writing on a sheet

A chance for writers

The 'Writers Forum' is an attempt to highlight writing by authors from within Staffordshire and the Stoke on Trent area. Dominic Took explains here why he felt moved to try and set it up...

I set up The Writer's Forum in December 2007,  with the help of Malcolm Henson from The North Staffordshire Press as an attempt to promote local writing.
I hope we will have many meetings for writers to come together, at which there will be discussion, speakers and even competitions.

As a self published author, I realise how difficult it is to break into the publishing industry, especially if you need to work more on what you've done.

As a dyslexic I am also keen to help people, because not all of us (and this is most) can produce an immaculate manuscript the first, second or possibly third time.
There is nationally no real information, that is easily accessible to people from any background, about self publishing, mainstream publishing and for that matter, editing.
All these skills form the publishing process; and at first glance it can often be about the idea and the publishing alone.
But there is far more to it.

Therefore using our websites, forum and the public events, we hope to be able to put some of Staffordshire's talent on the map, for everyone to see.

We won't ever say it's easy for anyone, because it's not, and it's very difficult.
But with our knowledge we can hopefully help people to achieve success.

Talent

We believe that there is a great mine of local talent in the county waiting to be unearthed and our purpose is to meet regularly as a group, where we can exchange ideas and nurture the writing process amongst a wide section of the community.

One member of the group - Mervyn Edwards - has already published many books about local history, and another at the age of 78 is still writing and self publishing.

There is quite an extensive list of authors who are associated with our scheme. Dominic Took, Maria De Marks, Fred Deakin, Mervyn Edwards and Malcolm Henson are all a part of it.

"The aim of this group is to encourage writers to ‘put pen to paper’ and produce material for publication"

Malcolm Henson

Maria is a language specialist and produces text books for students in Spanish, Italian and English, and also an e-learning expert who sends publishing material to various countries.
Malcolm runs North Staffordshire Press and an editorial business , and is based in the Business Village at Staffordshire University in Stoke-on-Trent.
Dominic Took writes  fiction and has several books to his name. He is an undergraduate at Staffordshire University studying computing and the production of computer games.
Mervyn has  written and published about North Staffordshire pit disasters as well as books about recreation and leisure in the area which have been very popular.
Finally Fred Deakin who is aiming to become the world’s oldest living man, has a foot in the boxing camp and is known for his writings about local boxers. He has sold as many as one thousand copies of some of his works.
