Stoke-on-Trent darts champion Phil 'The Power' Taylor cleaned the board at the BBC Midlands Sports Awards ceremony on 03 December by scooping Midlands Sportsman of the Year Award and Midlands Sports Personality of the Year Award. Taylor was overwhelmed by his double win and said it is important that darts has finally been recognised as a sport and that his personal achievements have been noticed. An incredible 40% of the total votes for Midland Sports Personality of the Year went to Taylor. He said he never expected to win and couldn't thank the voters enough. Staffordshire's other stars The evening saw some other Staffordshire sportsmen and women picking up trophies for their sporting achievements and contributions.

Commonwealth Games badminton Gold and silver medallist Tracey Hallam from Burton-upon-Trent was named Sportswoman of the Year while Cannock Mens Hockey team won Team of the Year, the County’s Under 13 Cricketers took the Junior Team award and Tamworth Athletics Club's Nathan Woodward won the Junior Sportsman award.

And completing the Staffordshire success story, there was a special presentation to the former Stoke City and England goalkeeper Gordon Banks, who was elected into the BBC Midlands Sporting Hall of Fame, 40 years after playing his part in England's 1966 World Cup triumph. |
