Baby V-Neck Cardigans - For 12" & 14" Necks

This pattern, submitted by Doris Lord from the Haslington Machine Knitting Club is a firm favourite, ideal for keeping your tiny babies warm. To make yours, follow the instructions below.

Using 4 ply (Garment knit using Brother Machine)

Back

Cast on 50 (62) sts, Using Tension 4/4. Work in 1x1 rib for 8 rows . Transfer stitches to main bed.

Change to tension 7 . Row Counter 000

Knit to row 26 (34) put a marker at each end.

Knit to row 60(72) Run off on waste yarn as follows 14-22-14 (19-24-19)

Fronts

Cast on 25 (31) sts, work as for back to row 26, (34) . Mark armhole edge and commence neck shaping.

Using 3 pronged tool decrease 1 stitch at front edge on every 3rd row until 14 (19) sts remain. Knit to row 60 (72) Run off on waste yarn.

Buttonhole Band

Join shoulder seams. Place garment to the machine, to gauge how many stitches are required to go all round the garment i.e Left front, Right Front and back neck. (Approx 122) (134 ) stitches.

Cast on using waste yarn, 122 (134) stitches Knit a few rows, Knit 1 row nylon cord

Using main yarn and tension 7 , Knit 1 row, Tension 6 knit 3 rows , make 3 buttonholes where required. Knit 4 more rows. Change to tension 8 knit 1 row. Tension 6 knit 4 rows, complete buttonholes, knit 4 more rows. Make hem . Knit 1 row tension 8. Place garment to machine. Knit 1 row tension 8. Knit 1 row Tension 10. Latch off.

Sleeves

Cast on 36 (40) stitches , Tension 4/4 work in 1x1 rib for 8 rows. Transfer stitches to main bed. Main tension 7, Row Counter 000 . Increase 1 stitch at the beginning and end of every 5th row until 50 (60) stitches Knit to row 40 (50) . Knit 1 row nylon cord.

Run off on waste yarn.

To Make Up

Replace sleeve right side facing

Place garment on machine, wrong side facing , bring needles forward. Knit 1 row tension 10, Latch off.

These are basic patterns. Try a small border after the welt or even a little fairisle if you wish, but remember. Keep floats very short. These little babies have oh so tiny fingers.
