Machine Knit Hat with Topknot

This pattern for a machine knit hat with a topknot was very kindly sent in to us by Maureen. This one's a new pattern but you all seem to love it so far - thanks Maureen. If you want to make one, follow the instructions below.

Cast on 75 sts in 1x1 rib Tension 0/0.

Knit 14 rows or 28 rows if you want a turn back edge

Transfer stitches to main bed

RC=000 Tension 7

Knit 40 rows

Starting at the left transfer stitches to adjacent needles. Push empty needles back to non working position.

Knit 2 rows. Break of wool, leaving a long end.

Leaving the centre 10 stitches in working position thread wool through the remaining stitches.

Rejoin wool and working on these 10 stitches using a slightly higher tension knit 30 rows.

Break off yarn and thread through stitches. This forms a tube. Weave in yarn making sure cast on row of tube is secure.

To Finish

Sew seam of hat and mattress stitch the rib. Tie a knot in the tube.

Alternatively cast on and knit 60 rows. This forms a roll up brim.

Smaller sizes can be made using 36 (48) stitches.

Notes

This little hat will fit a baby 3-5lb.Suitable for machines with ribber. Knitted in 4 ply.
