Burton has been holding annual One World Week events for many years now; they are intended to promote respect and understanding within the community, and to raise awareness of needs of people in other parts of the world. Activities have increased to well beyond a single week, in fact into the beginning of the following year. Local performers The latest event “Together in Harmony” included promotion of local performers of different racial origins on one stage at Burton’s Town Hall. They included Aby, Iby and Sabina (Harmony Group), Masti Dancers, Lianne, Virus Crewe, Maniwood, Naran Group, Kurdish Music Group, Afghans, Asif and Geoff Noble.
All performers did very well and there was an audience of between 450 & 500. It was obvious that both the performers and audience thoroughly enjoyed the event. I would highly recommend them to organizers of any similar events in Staffordshire or West Midlands! Promoting Fairtrade

There was a Fairtrade stall with displays and sale of produce, intended to raise awareness of one way in which local people can help producers in poorer countries. Refreshments included hot food, prepared and served by Mrs N Furdous and her friends. Cash received from refreshment sales were donated to the ‘Kashmir Earthquake Relief Development Fund’. OWW offshoot in Burton This is a local appeal organised by a recent offshoot of One World Week in Burton, called Burton Interfaith Network (BIFN). These sales together with collections from a fairly young audience raised over £400, bringing BIFN’s current total to over £4,000! Mahboob Yousaf, Chair of OWW in Burton said: "This event was organised following local artists who approached me and said that many organisations had said they would help them but did not, this made me think of OWW theme for 05 'promises, promises' although this refers to much bigger things such as Aid, debt relief and fair trade etc. "It made me think we will help these artists and keep our promise. What a massive achievement for us as who have worked on this as volunteers and on a voluntary basis." |
