November 06, 2006

Mark Lemon won the bulk of the awards at Stoke's end of season get together on Saturday, taking the Rider of the Year award and a trophy for most maximums scored over the season.

"It's very pleasing and somehow justifies a lot of the effort put in over the season" he said.

Robbie Kessler regained the trophy he won last year as Most Consistent Rider Home and Away whilst Luke Priest was awarded the Jim Forrester donated Stoke Spitfires Rider of the Year award.

"I'm really pleased but I think Sam Dore should have had this award because he made real progress over the season" said Priest.

All the riders from both teams plus the team managers received mementos and made speeches.

November 03, 2006

Stoke hold their annual end of season get together at Loomer Road stadium on Saturday (4th) starting around 8pm.

"All the riders from both the Potters and Spitfires teams have been invited and it should be a really good night" said Dave Tattum.

"There will be a number of awards to hand out and all the riders will have an opportunity to say a few words. There is also a buffet and entertainment and we are hoping as many people as possible can come along and see the riders."

Stoke will stage a training school on Sunday Nov 5th, from 12-4pm weather permitting.

Contact Dave Tattum on 07789 028003 for more details on that and the end of season get together.

October 31, 2006

Paul Pickering said that he is pleased enough with the immediate reaction after taking part in three match races on Saturday, but stressed that he needs longer to assess the situation fully.

"I enjoyed Saturday and I felt reasonably good afterwards, but I intend waiting a week or so to see if there is any kind of reaction", he said.

"Riding on Saturday was nothing more than another step forward I hope. But it is far too early to say anything more than that and I will just have to wait and see how I feel in a few days time."

Stoke will run a training school on 05 November from 12:00 - 16:00, weather permitting.

October 30, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires over-ran Sittingbourne at Loomer Road on Saturday, running out 64-29 winners.

Barrie Evans and Rob Grant completed paid maximums though all the home riders scored heavily.

"It was a good effort on our part and gave the riders a bit of confidence going in to the winter" said Dave Tattum.

October 27, 2006

Stoke bring the curtain down on their season when SAS Spitfires take on Sittingbourne at Loomer Road on Saturday.

"I would expect us to finish on a high and give the supporters something to talk about" said Ben Barker.

"We won`t take Sittingbourne for granted, but I expect us to put on a good performance."

Stoke will run a familiar line up whilst Sittingbourne include former Potter Dean Felton.

October 26, 2006

Stoke supporters will get an added bonus during the SAS Spitfires v Sittingbourne meeting on Saturday when Paul Pickering takes part in a series of demonstration races.

"I see this as the next logical step in my rehabilitation and I'm just pleased that I will get an opportunity to test my arm without too much pressure in front of the Stoke supporters" he said.

"Without their generosity and of others, I wouldn't be at this stage now because all the funds raised went in to getting the best medical treatment.

Physio has been going well and I need to satisfy myself that my arm is improving."

Dave Tattum added, "I hope the supporters come along on Saturday because that will mean so much to Pickers."

October 22, 2006

Stoke team manager John Adams was delighted with the SAS Spitfires fight back from 10 points down to beat Buxton 48-45 at Loomer Road last night.

"I thought we did really well to come from that far back and it really was a belting meeting" he said.

"Both sides had some very good individual efforts but the overall performance was first rate."

Ben Barker scored 20 and was beaten only by Jonathan Bethell as was Rob Grant and Barrie Evans. Bethell won his first four rides until headed in heat 13 by Grant and Evans.

Stoke 48: B Evans 11+1, G Isherwood 0, D Haigh 2, B Barker 20, R Grant 11, A Lowe 1, B Hopwood 3.

October 20, 2006

John Branney could be back for Stoke SAS Spitfires home meeting with Buxton on Saturday.

"John will see a doctor today about his foot injury and if he gets the okay, he wants to ride" said Dave Tattum.

"It would be good to have him back because we have missed his little bit of experience."

October 19, 2006

Luke Priest continues to make good progress and is currently getting around to some of the other tracks where support has been coming in for him.

“I have had so much support from people up and down the country and there is no way that I can get around to thank everyone” he said.

“But I have been going to as many places as I can just to try to say thank you personally.

“Apart from that, I`m feeling really well. I am putting weight on and gaining strength and there are a lot of positive signs.”

October 17, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires home fixture against Sittingbourne on Wednesday has been called off - because the opposition cannot put together a team.

"It's very disappointing and we only got to hear about it ourselves at the early part of this week" said Dave Tattum.

"We have made our feelings clear but it seems there is nothing we can do about it, though I do feel it is important that the supporters know it is out of our control."

October 15, 2006

October 12, 2006

Sam Dore has conceded that his season is over after he broke his collarbone last Sunday in Stoke SAS Spitfires home defeat to Buxton.

"It will take a few weeks to heal and I am leaving to return hom on October 23, so that's my season over with" said the Australian.

"It`s been a season of progress for me and I definitely want to be back next year."

Rob Grant will make his first home appearance of the season when he lines up at number five for Stoke SAS Spitfires against Buxton at Loomer Road on Sunday, starting at 7.30pm.

“With Barrie Evans, Gareth Isherwood and Sam Dore also in the team, we are a bit closer to tracking a team of our own assets now” said Dave Tattum.

“We have kept in touch with Granty all week following his knock at Berwick last Saturday and he says that he has fully recovered and looking forward to riding.”

Stoke beat Buxton 44-48 at Hi Edge in the Trophy competition and are looking to post a double.

“We should be able to beat them around our place which would give us another three points.

“Having said that, Buxton always up their game against us and I`m sure it will be a hard meeting” concluded Tattum.

***

Team manager John Adams feels that Paul Thorp and Mark Lemon have a reasonable chance of success when they line up for Stoke in the Premier Best Pairs at Glasgow on Sunday.

“I really do think it could go well for us if we get a bit of luck” he said.

“We have as good a pairing as any of the sides and I'm sure that Mark and Thorpy will be up for it on Sunday.”

October 6, 2006

Barrie Evans and Ben Hopwood should make their SAS Spitfires home debuts on Sunday when Stoke take on near neighbours Buxton in the Conference Trophy at Loomer Road starting at 7.30pm.

The SAS Spitfires beat their local rivals 44-48 on their own track a few weeks back and a win on Sunday would give them all three points on offer.

"We have to go for it, though Buxton can get around our track very well" said Dave Tattum.

Injured Spitfire Adam allott returns to Hull Infirmary in a few weeks time for a check up on his back injury.

"I'm in a cast at the moment which is quite uncomfortable" he said.

"They are still not quite sure on the best way to treat my back, so i am going back in a few weeks for an update."

"It's been good to see the supporters and riders and I`d like to thank everyone for their support".

"It could have gone for auction, but I really wanted to keep it" said Priest.

Hopwood said "After two away meetings I am looking forward to my first meeting at home."

September 29, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires continued their winning form by beating Cleveland 43-46 last night.

The away win gave the SAS Spitfires the bonus point as well and puts them in a strong position in the Shield competition.

“I thought we rode well and the newcomers (Rob Grant and Ben Hopwood) impressed me with their attitude” said team manager John Woolridge.

“Considering Granty had not raced all season he did well.

“But the reserves really came good and had to take a lot of rides between them after Kriss Irving pulled out with knee damage after winning his opening ride."

**

Luke Priest expects to travel to Loomer Road tomorrow to watch the Stoke v Mildenhall meeting.

“I want to get along to a meeting before the season ends and unless anything goes wrong, I`ll be there on Saturday” he said.

September 28, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires include Rob Grant and newcomer Ben Hopwood in the squad to travel to Cleveland tonight for the Conference Shield meeting.

Grant has sat out this season after a run of poor form sapped his confidence but has never turned his back on the sport. “We have been talking for a while and he is keen to maybe get in a couple rides or meetings”
pointed out Dave Tattum.
“As for Ben Hopwood, he is only 15 years old and is a big mate of Gareth Isherwood".

Kriss Irving is also back for the first time since damaging knee ligaments but Ben Barker misses out due to riding for Somerset at Sheffield. Scott Courtney is another absentee as he has not recovered from a knock he suffered at Buxton.

The SAS Spitfires have a good record in the Conference Shield and beat the Bays 53-42 at Loomer Road on September 13.

STOKE:  D Meldrum, G Isherwood, K Irving, B Barker (r/r), R Grant, B Hopwood, S Dore.

September 27, 2006

September 26, 2006

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum has assured supporters that there will be a full programme of racing at Loomer Road throughout October.

“We will run the bulk of our remaining Conference League fixtures at weekends now and that will give supporters who have yet to see too many of those fixtures an opportunity to see the younger lads in action” he said.

“Sittingbourne are here next Wednesday (4th) but then we have Buxton here on Sunday (8th) and Scunthorpe on Saturday 14th plus fixtures on the following two weekends”.

**  Mark Lemon and Paul Thorp will wear the Easy Rider Potters colours in the Premier League Best Pairs championship at Glasgow on October 8.

September 25, 2006

Stoke's Mark Lemon finished on six points in the Premier League Riders Championship at Sheffield last night.

"Mark made a poor start to the meeting, mainly due to being off the outside grids which were just not working” said John Adams.

"He had the inside runs after and picked up three second places which got him his six points."

The meeting was won by Somerset's Magnus Zetterstrom with Jason Lyons, Gary Havelock and Tomas Topinka next in line.

September 24, 2006

The Paul Clews and David Howe partnership proved too strong for the opposition as they triumphed in Best Pairs meeting to mark Clews` testimonial at Loomer Road last night.

Howe was beaten only by Rory Schlein who went through the card whilst Clews scored double figures to put the pairing on 26 points.

“It was a really good night and I just hope people enjoyed the racing and the fun element as well” said Clews.

Schlein and Nick Simmons were runners up on 23 points with Trent Leverington and Stuart Robson third on 20 points.

September 23, 2006

Mark Lemon wears the Stoke Easy Rider Potters colours in the Premier League Riders championship at Sheffield on Sunday.

The Australian is making his fourth appearance in the championship and has progressed through the qualifying heats and reached the final in the last two seasons.

“My first appearance was a bit of a disaster, but the last two have gone reasonably well for me and I`m very much hoping to make it three finals in a row” said the Australian.

“Getting through the qualifying rounds is the first target and then everything is up for grabs.

“Everything rests on those four laps and you just have to hope that you drop the clutch a bit quicker than the other guys and that your bike holds out.

“To be honest, I`m quite hopeful of a decent result and I feel that if it comes together for me on the day, I can make the rostrum again.

“I`m just pleased to be involved in the line up and I will do my best. But I`m not going to beat myself up over it if it doesn`t happen for me.”

September 22, 2006

Stoke skipper Paul Clews stages his testimonial meeting at Loomer Road on Saturday.

"We are running a Best Pairs meeting though there will be other attractions such as a demonstration of Under 15`s rider and quad bikes" he said of the meeting which starts at 6.30pm.

"It`s been quite hectic putting it together, but the riders have been great to deal with and i just hope the supporters come along and enjoy it."

September 20, 2006

Adam Allott faces a lengthy spell of recuperation after doctors decided to let his back injuries heal naturally.

“He has cracked the number 6 vertabrae and has been told that the wisest decision will be to let nature take its course” said his father Nicky.

“He has had an operation on his broken elbow which shouldn't be a problem. But the decision was made not to operate on his back and he will have to wear some form of cast for a few months once he is released from the hospital.”

September 19, 2006

Luke Priest has been released from hospital and is back home in Shropshire.

"I had a big operation last week which was a success and the medical staff decided that I was good enough to go home" he said.

"I have lost about three stone in weight so i am building up my strength and muscles.

"But just going home has given me a boost and I am very determined to beat my injuries."

September 18, 2006

There was another away win for Stoke SAS Spitfires yesterday, but Stoke Potters play-off hopes were dashed following their defeat at Newcastle.

"We gave it our best shot, but losing three home meetings meant that we had to win away and though we got close, it just didn`t happen for us" said John Adams.

Ben Barker and David Meldrum combined for a 5-1 in heat 15 that gave the SAS Spitfires a 44-48 away win.

"We had to make a few changes, but it all went well and the team are pulling in some good results" said Dave Tattum.

September 16, 2006

SAS Spitfires rider Luke Priest is being allowed home from hospital this weekend.

"We are absolutely thrilled with the news" said his father John.

September 15, 2006

Adam Allott has made a request for visitors after being transferred to a Hull hospital following his crash at Scunthorpe last Sunday.

"Adam will there for another week or so and has asked if there are any supporters in the area, he would welcome visitors" said Dave Tattum.

Allott has been told that his back injuries need to heal naturally.

Kriss Irving has had a cast put on his knee ligament injuries and John Branney is on crutches.

Paul Pickering has stressed that he will be at Paul Clews testimonial meeting on September 23, but not in a riding capacity.

"My arm is not good enough by a long way" he said.

September 13, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires revamped team takes on Cleveland Bays at Loomer Road tonight starting at 7.30pm.

The Spitfires have drafted in David Meldrum who goes straight in at number one whilst David Haigh is given an outing at number three in place of the injured John Branney.

Gareth Isherwood slots in at reserve and the Manchester based rider hopes to show he is capable of scoring points at this level. “It hasn`t been the season of progress I had hoped for, but it`s up to me to make every ride count” he said.

STOKE: D Meldrum, A Lowe, D Haigh, B Barker, S Courtney, G Isherwood, S Dore.

CLEVELAND:  P Burnett, G Beaton, R Hodgson, M Emerson, D Speight, G Blair, J Haines.

September 11, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires came close to pulling off a surprise result at Scunthorpe yesterday when they lost out in a last heat decider, eventually losing 48-42.

**

Scott Courtney finished fourth in the Conference League Riders Championship at Rye House on Saturday.

September 10, 2006

Stoke Easy Rider Potters got back to winning ways by beating Edinburgh 47-43 at Loomer Road last night, but the Monarchs nicked the bonus point thanks to their 52-40 win the previous night. See Results Page for more.

Stoke now face Edinburgh tonight for the return leg at Loomer road starting at 7.30pm.

September 8, 2006

Stoke Easy Rider Potters travel to Edinburgh tonight and then host the Monarchs at Loomer Road tomorrow.

"We need to get as many points as we can out of the two meetings and i think our minimum target should be three points" said team manager John Adams.

"Edinburgh is not generally one of our better away tracks. But they have been struggling a bit and we might just catch them on an off night."

September 6, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires rattled up another big score in the Conference Shield competition by beating Weymouth 65-29 at Loomer Road last night.

September 6, 2006

Paul Clews has pulled off a coup for his testimonial meeting on September 23 by revealing that Paul Pickering will take some part in the event.

“I`m not sure to what level he will take part and we certainly don`t want him to overdo anything” said Clews.
“No one is saying that Paul will take part in the meeting itself. But he will be back on a bike in some capacity and a lot depends on how he feels on the day”.

Also included in the meeting will be a display of Under 15 riders and a quad bike demonstration.
“There`s a little piece of history involved in the sense that I started out with the Under 15`s at Coventry” added Clews.
“The quads should be really good fun and I`m sure that we will tempt some of the riders to go out and have

September 5, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires hope to bolster their Conference Shield tally when they face Weymouth at Loomer Road on Wednesday.

"Having beaten Sittingbourne quite comfortably on Sunday, the riders will be fairly confident. We have to avoid complacency, but it should be a meeting that we would expect to win.
"Weymouth include David Mason and Chris Johnson so we will have to give them every respect. But we are very determined to do something in this competition and have made a decent start".

Scott Courtney could return for the SAS Spitfires after missing the fixture at Sittingbourne due to illness and Stoke may make a change at number six with Gareth Isherwood knocking on the door.

September 4, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires got their Conference Shield programme off to a winning start by beating Sittingbourne 29-54 in Kent yesterday.

“I got them all together before the start and told them this was their opportunity to get this new competition off to a good start” he said.

“I thought their attitude towards the meeting was first rate and if they perform like that on Wednesday against Weymouth, they should pick up another two points.

“Rider replacement for Scott (Courtney) worked well and pulled in 10 points and it was good to see young Kriss Irving get a good score under his belt.”

STOKE SAS SPITFIRES 54:  A Allott 13, K Irving 11+2, J Branney 11+3, B Barker 12, S Courtney (r/r), A Lowe 2+1, S Dore 5+1.

***

Meanwhile, Stoke promoter Dave Tattum has been left to juggle the Easy Rider Potters fixture list following the cancellation of their home meeting against Mildenhall on Saturday.

The league programme has a cut off date of September 17 which would prove difficult to fit in the five remaining fixtures.

“I will have to get the views of the BSPA office and see where we go from there” he said.

September 2, 2006

Joint team manager John Adams has labelled tonight`s home fixture against Mildenhall as a must-win situation for the Stoke Easy Rider Potters.

“We have five meetings left and every one will be like a Cup Final for us” pointed out Adams who says he is still optimistic of a top eight finish.

“I can see other teams in a similar position to ourselves dropping points and I reckon the last place will come down to Workington, Newcastle and Stoke.

“We have to make all our home meetings count from here on in and grab any opportunity for away points.  It`s as simple as that.

“But we can still get there, I`m confident of that.”

***

Stoke will stage a round of the Short Track racing at Loomer Road tomorrow starting at 2pm and Potters Robbie Kessler will be part of the line up.

“It sounds very exciting and I`m looking forward to it” he said.

Stoke SAS Spitfires travel to Sittingbourne on Sunday.

September 1, 2006

Mark Lemon makes a return to the Stoke team when the Easy Rider Potters face Mildenhall in an important league fixture at Loomer Road on Saturday starting at 7.30pm.

Lemon withdrew from the defeat at Somerset last Friday and then missed the home and away defeats against Rye House due to feeling the effects of a sinus infection.
“That`s all pretty much cleared up now and I`ll certainly be there on Saturday” said the Australian.
“I thought the problem had been cured by an operation over the winter, but seemingly not".

Lemon takes his place in a familiar line up, though promoter Dave Tattum has yet to confirm the number seven, whilst Mildenhall include the experienced Jason Lyons, Brent Werner and former Potter Jon Armstrong as well as youth in James Brundle and Jason King who won the British Under 21 round at Loomer Road earlier in the year.

“A win by more than seven points will give us the bonus point and we really need to take all three points from a big home win.
“It`s bunching up in mid table and every point is important now” added Tattum.

August 30, 2006

Conference Pairs Championship runners up Adam Allot and Ben Barker are included in the SAS Spitfires line up to face Buxton at Loomer Road tonight in the Conference Shield competition.

“I hope the supporters turn up and show their appreciation because Ben and Adam rode their socks off in the championship” said Stoke promoter Dave Tattum.
“I was really impressed with the way they thought things through and they sailed through the qualifying rounds.
“Had we said before the meeting that they would finish on the rostrum and been unlucky not to have been on top spot, we would gladly have taken it.

Tonight`s fixture against their near neighbours is in the Shield competition and John Branney, who has had a few Easy Rider Potters outings, is hoping the team can get off to a winning start. “Buxton always ride our track very well and there is usually a bit of an edge to racing in a local derby” he said.
“We don`t seem to have had a Conference meeting for a few weeks because of the weather, though I`m sure we will settle well and hopefully get off to a winning start".

STOKE: A Allott, K Irving, J Branney, B Barker, S Courtney, A Lowe, S Dore.

August 28, 2006

Adam Allott and Ben Barker secured runners up spot for SAS Spitfires as the Conference Best Pairs Championship at Scunthorpe yesterday ended in controversy.

Ben Barker was excluded after he tangled with Benji Compton in the final and the race was awarded.

“We were really pleased to have finished on the rostrum – but we certainly didn`t agree with the referee`s decision to award the final to the Scunthorpe pairing” said Allott.
“But my argument was that one of them may have had a fall or an engine failure in a re-run and I do feel we should have had a second chance”.

August 26, 2006

James Grieves steps in for Mark Lemon at Stoke tonight in the home meeting against Rye House, John Branney gets another opportunity at number seven.

August 25, 2006

Stoke Easy rider Potters travel to Somerset tonight for the first of three meetings in four days. "That's not too much of a big deal providing there are no problems with the bikes and I think we are all hoping to get the Bank Holiday period off to a decent start"
said Trent Leverington.

"If we can do that, it will give us more impetus when we meet Rye House tomorrow. The team is growing in confidence and results are improving. So I think we will go to Somerset hoping to pull in a reasonable score".

August 24, 2006

Paul Clews has started to reveal the first names that will compete in his testimonial meeting at Loomer Road on September 23.

“I am waiting for confirmation from a few more just yet which is what I would expect; but David Howe, James Grieves, George Stancl, Chris Schramm and Chris Schramm are all definites” he said.

“We are going to run a Best Pairs meeting and there will be plenty of fun things going on during the evening as well.”

August 22, 2006

Luke Priest is due to have the external fixator attached to his pelvic area removed some time this week.

“We are not sure exactly when, but we have been told by the doctors that they intend to take it away sometime during the next few days” said John Priest who added that tests on Luke`s bladder have been carried out.

**

Ben Barker and Adam Allot will represent Stoke SAS Spitfires in the Conference Pairs Championship at Scunthorpe on Bank Holiday Monday.

August 21, 2006

Much was made of the performances of Paul Thorp and Alan Mogridge prior to Stoke's home meeting with Workington last night (August 20).

But whilst Thorp sparkled with a paid 13 return from five impressive rides, it was a miserable return for Mogridge, who had publicly voiced his displeasure at losing his team place at Loomer Road, but fell twice and scored just 3+1 from four outings as Stoke won 54-41.

August 19, 2006

Dave Tattum says his side are ready to face one of their biggest challenges of the season when Workington travel to Loomer road on Sunday, the meeting starting at 7.30pm.

"I have had a word with our riders and this is a massive meeting for the club and the supporters" he said.

"Workington have strengthened up twice recently by bringing in Rusty Harrison and now Alan Mogridge and they will be expecting to go away with the points, but we're ready for whatever they can throw at us and I expect nothing less than full commitment from the Stoke contingent".

**

Stoke have arranged their league fixture with Somerset at Loomer Road for Saturday, September 16.

STOKE:  P Thorp, T Leverington, P Clews, R Kessler, M Lemon, B Evans, AN Other.

WORKINGTON:  G Stead, A Mogridge, T Piscz, R Harrison, J Wright, T Woffenden, A Collins.

August 17, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires home meeting with Buxton last night was rained off.

"It had been fine all day and then the heavens opened half an hour or so before start time" said a dejected Dave Tattum.

There is no restaging date as yet.

***

Alan Mogridge makes a swift return and will race at Loomer Road on Sunday – wearing Workington's colours after signing on loan for the Cumbrian outfit until the end of the season.

Ironically, the man who replaced him in the Stoke line up, Paul Thorp, lost a team place when he was released by Workington to bring in Rusty Harrison.

"I have never, ever known such a situation in all the years I have been involved in speedway" pointed out Dave Tattum who readily agreed to Mogridge joining the Comets.

"This was always going to be a bit of a battle, but with both Mogridge and Thorp no doubt looking to prove a point, I really do think this could be our meeting of the season and one definitely not to be missed".

Workington promoter Graham Drury pointed out: "Moggo's had things to say about losing his place at Stoke and you can take it from me, I won't have to motivate him for this meeting on Sunday".

Thorp has not had a lot to say in public about his release by the Comets. But he was bewildered and bitterly disappointed at being snubbed despite riding through the pain barrier with a foot injury and the effects of hay-fever.

"I certainly didn't see it coming and it left a very bad taste in my mouth at the time" he said.

"I'd rather do my talking on the track and I can't deny this is one meeting that I have really been looking forward to".

Tattum concluded: "If this doesn't whet the appetite of the supporters, nothing will and we are expecting a big and noisy turn out on Sunday, probably our biggest gate of the season".

Luke Priest continues to make good progress with a number of further operations lined up over the coming days.

"Luke has had the plaster cast removed from his leg which is another plus for the lad" explained his father, John. "What is planned next is to take the fixator away and to test his bladder."

"At the moment, all liquids are being bypassed his bladder. But they intend to inflate the bladder to ensure it has fully healed this time. If that proves a success, I really do think that Luke is well on the way to recovery. All-in-all, though, he is making really steady progress and looks quite well in himself".

August 15, 2006

Dave Tattum will make a late choice as to who rides at number six when SAS Spitfires take on Buxton at Loomer Road this Wednesday.

“That has been a problem spot for us all season” he conceded, “and I will give it some thought before naming the team.

“Otherwise we go with the side that lost to Plymouth last week.

“This is a big meeting for us because we are keen to get some Trophy points on the board.

“On top of that it is a local derby and i`m sure it will be another close meeting.”

August 12, 2006

Robert Ksiezak and Billy Legg step in to the Stoke reserve berths for the Easy Rider Potters home fixture against Isle of Wight tonight after Barrie Evans was advised by his doctor not to ride.

“On of Barrie's knuckles has healed fairly well but the doctor told him that if he fell and scraped the other one again, it would need a skin graft” said Dave Tattum.

“If that were to happen, Barrie would miss the rest of the season. So, far better for him to miss one more meeting than risk that.”

Glasgow rider Ksiezak is a big scorer around Loomer Road and Tattum feels the two newcomers will get amongst the points.

“Robert has had some terrific rides against here, so we are hoping he can do the same for us” concluded the promoter.

August 11, 2006

Team manager John Adams is hopeful that Stoke can beat Isle of Wight at Loomer Road on Saturday to keep their recent good form going.

"Winning the bonus point will be a tall order after we lost 60-28 at their place, but I'm quite sure we can beat them tomorrow and put another two points on the board" he said.

"What we need to do is build momentum because we have got teams coming here where we can pick up bonus points.

"My belief is that the bonus points will make the difference about whether we make the play offs or not and now that we have stabilised a bit, we should start in bang in some bigger home scores."

Stoke have reshuffled their line up by putting Paul Thorp at one and Mark Lemon going in at number five.

"It just gives us the options to see how different pairings work" said Dave Tattum.

Barrie Evans will make a late decision on whether he is fit enough to ride.

August 10, 2006

Rain called a halt to Stoke SAS Spitfires home fixture against Plymouth last night (Wednesday, August 9) with the visitors leading 34-38 after 12 Heats which means the result stands.

Apart from the way it was done, Alan Mogridge says he has no qualms about losing his team place at Stoke.

"I would rather have been told to my face, but I have no qualms about losing my place in the team" he said.

"In fact, all this has come as a relief and I'd like to thank the supporters for backing me and to wish the team well for the rest of the season. There were circumstances behind why my performances dipped and I really had wanted to finish my last season on a high note."

"If the right offer comes in, I'll consider going somewhere else for the rest of the season."

Mark Lemon has been handed a number of Elite League bookings with Reading.

"That can only be good experience for me and as long as I can fit the meetings in, I'll do all I can" said Lemon who rides at Arena Essex tonight.

Kriss Irving makes a return to the Stoke side when the SAS Spitfires start their Trophy campaign with a home fixture against Plymouth tomorrow (Wednesday).

"I took a few weeks out to regroup after a tough few weeks but feel ready to give it another go now" he said.

Stoke have an opening for an announcer. "If anyone is interested, please contact me on 07789 028003" added Tattum.

Stoke Easy Rider Potters completed their first double of the season when they beat Sheffield 46-43 at Loomer Road last night. See Results Page for more.

August 5, 2006

Despite an historic first away win at Sheffield on Thursday, Stoke have reacted to a string of disappointing results and made a change to their line up with former Potter Paul Thorp coming in to replace Alan Mogridge.

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum explained “We had to accept that the team wasn`t gelling and getting the results expected and we had to react accordingly.

“Looking through the score-charts, Alan`s scores and average have dipped considerably this season and unfortunately he was the one who had to make way.

“I`m the first to admit that he has been a terrific servant to the club. But no one man is bigger than the club and we had to think of the supporters and sponsors in doing what we think is the right decision.”

Thorp makes his Easy Rider Potters debut in the fixture against Sheffield, his parent club, tonight.

“I`m looking forward to going back to Stoke” said Thorp who recently lost his place at Workington.

“It`s a bit like going back to my roots and I`ve generally had a good reception whenever I have gone back there.

“I wasn`t happy about the Workington situation, but life goes on and there are plenty of meetings left this season for me to make an impression.”

Alan Mogridge was not available for comment last night.

Stoke hope to complete their first league double over Sheffield tonight, having won 44-45 at Owlerton on Thursday.

“They will come here looking for revenge and the inclusion of Thorpy will only spice up the occasion even more” added Dave Tattum.

August 4, 2006

Stoke Easy Rider Potters created a little piece of history last night by being the first Stoke team to win at Sheffield.

"It was an absolutely brilliant night and the riders worked their socks off to produce what was a tremendous achievement" said team manager John Adams of the 44-45 victory.

August 3, 2006

Shane Waldron will go in at number seven for the Stoke Easy Rider Potters away fixture at Sheffield tonight.

"Shane has been going well in the Conference League and this is a good chance for him" said Dave Tattum.

August 2, 2006

Stoke travel to Sheffield tomorrow for the first of three meetings in four days.

"It's a tough place to go to, but you have to go there sometime and we do have the riders to get around there" said away team manager John Adams.

Promoter Dave Tattum had hoped to include John Oliver as a replacement for Luke Priest but that has fallen through.  "I have booked Matthew Wright for Saturday and Sunday but am still waiting for a reply from a couple of riders for Sheffield”" he said.

***

Luke Priest underwent an operation on Tuesday to repair his bladder. "He was in a lot of pain afterwards but we are all hoping that it was a success" said his father John.

Luke has now been moved to Ward 120 at City General Hospital.

***

Shane Parker is hoping the BSPA will look in to the manufacturing of the rear tyres following an incident at Stoke on Saturday when several tyres were found to be running out of true.  "That's not the first it has happened to us and it really needs looking at and sorting" said the highly regarded Parker.

July 31, 2006

Stoke Easy rider Potters had no answer to a rampant Glasgow side that ran out 38-55 winners at Loomer road on Saturday night (July 29).

The manner of the defeat to Glasgow resulted in promoter Dave Tattum saying: "We can all accept home defeats if we go down having given 100 per cent, but unfortunately I cannot say that about the loss on Saturday which has left me feeling very disappointed and angry.

"My thoughts are very much with the supporters and our sponsors because they were let down on Saturday.

"I am not going to rant and rave about it, but if the riders, and they know which ones they are, think that there is a comfort zone to be had here at Stoke, they are very much mistaken.

"I am not going to say anything more than that or elaborate on it either.
But I repeat, there is no easy comfort zone for the riders."

***

Luke Priest, who has an operation on his bladder today, will be handed a cheque for £3935 as part of the fund set up following his accident on July 5.

There are more pledges to come in with one of the organisers, Ian Lewsey, saying: "The response has been terrific and we have items and pledges coming in from across the country."

July 29, 2006

Adam McKinna will come in to the Stoke side to face Glasgow at Loomer Road on Saturday (July 29).

“Adam has shown that he can get stuck in and score a few points at reserve and we are hoping he will do a job for us on Saturday” said Dave Tattum.

“Glasgow seem to be tough opposition wherever they go and have already beaten us once here this season. So we are keen to redress the situation and get another two points on the board.”

Glasgow strengthened up over the winter and brought in Danny Bird, Kauko Nieminen and Robert Ksiezak.

“All three have made a big impact and we will need to be at our best to beat them” conceded Tattum.

“Having said that, I expect this to be another highly charged affair because I am sure they fancy a win at our place.”

Apart from McKinna, Stoke are unchanged and Barrie Evans is hoping to get amongst the points and start improving his average.

“My figures have slipped quite a bit because I`ve had a lot of problems this season”
he said.

“What I have done now is go right back to the set up I used at the start of the season why I was scoring decent points in the hope that I can improve my form and scores.”

July 27, 2006

Ben Barker romped to a very impressive 21 point maximum (from six rides) as Stoke SAS Spitfires narrowly lost 46-47 to Scunthorpe at Loomer Road last night.

“Ben was on fire from start to finish and there was no way that he was going to be beaten by an opposing rider” praised Dave Tattum.

The score meant that Scunthorpe progress through to the semi finals of the KO Cup on a 106-82 aggregate.
“We knew we were up against it following such a heavy defeat in the first leg” conceded Tattum.

Adam Allott got Stoke off to a good start by winning the opening race though Scunthorpe were ahead by the half way stage.

Barker and Allott won the next two races but a further
5-1 from Wayne Carter and Tully over Scott Courtney put Scunthorpe 10 points up on the night and secured progression to the next round.

Barker took heat 14 and then put in another terrific ride to power around Richie Dennis and Auty in the last to complete his unbeaten performance. But a last place for the up to then unbeaten Allott saw Scunthorpe win by the narrowest of margins.

STOKE 46:  A Allott 12, A Lowe 1, J Branney 3, B Barker 21, S Courtney 7+1, J Morrison 0, S Dore 2.

SCUNTHORPE 47:  W Carter 8, A Tully 5+3, B Bekker 2+1, R Dennis 9+1, B Compton 7+1, T Woffinden 6+1, J Auty
10+3.

July 26, 2006

Stoke have made changes to the SAS Spitfires line up to face Scunthorpe in  the second leg of the KO Cup first round at Loomer Road tonight.

Dave Tattum has brought in John Morrison to ride at number six. “John comes in on the recommendation of Scott Courtney who says that he has been riding well in practice sessions” conceded Tattum.

Whilst Morrison joins Sam Dore at reserve, Tattum has switched Adam Lowe to number two with the rest of the team as it was.

Scunthorpe is one of the form teams in the Conference League and ran out comfortable 59-36 victors in the first leg on Sunday.  “We have 23 points to pull back and though it is not impossible, we really need to hit them hard early on and pull out all the stops.

“I know the lads are up for it and there will be a lot of pride at stake out there on the track tonight" added team manager John Woolridge.

STOKE: A Allott, A Lowe, J Branney, B Barker, S Courtney, J Morrison, S Dore.

SCUNTHORPE: W Carter, A Tully, B Bekker, R Dennis, B Compton, T Woffinden, J Auty.

July 25, 2006

Paul Pickering was a surprise visitor to Loomer Road on Saturday.

"I'm not the best of spectators as a rule, but I came down to watch a Conference League meeting a few weeks back and also went along to Redcar last week to support the lads" revealed Pickering.

As regards his ongoing arm injuries, Pickering went on: “There has been a lot of progress and I can see slight improvement in the muscle growth and how far I can raise and move my arm.

"I've still got a long way to go, but I do feel much better about a number of things."

July 24, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires didn't quite reach the 40+ point mark set by team manager John Woolridge against Scunthorpe in the first leg of the KO Cup.

"We had some bad luck with Scott Courtney taking a couple of nasty falls" said Woolridge, "but rider replacement for John Branney just didn't work out and we just didn't have enough riders firing on the day.

"Scunthorpe are so strong and their reserves picked up 27+2 between them which shows what we had to contend with."

The second leg is at Loomer Road on Wednesday (July 26).

July 23, 2006

Stoke pulled off a dramatic 47-42 win over Newcastle last night (Saturday July 22) after trailing by 10 points at the interval stage. See Results Page for more.

July 22, 2006

Paul Clews will make a late decision on his fitness as Stoke Easy Rider Potters take on Newcastle at Loomer Road tonight (Saturday July 22).

“Paul has been told that only rest will cure his leg swelling – but he will see if he can get a boot on and make a decision from there” explained Dave Tattum.

Newcastle generally go well around Loomer Road and have some big scorers in James Grieves, George Stancl and Josef Franc.

“This will be a tough test for us and Newcastle have a habit of pushing us all the way.

“But that`s good news for the supporters and we are looking for a big response from the team.”

***

Scott Courtney will return to the SAS Spitfires at Scunthorpe in the first round of the KO Cup tomorrow, but John Branney misses out due to riding for Workington in the Premier League.

***

News on Luke Priest is brighter. The 21 year old is now officially out of intensive care and his condition is regarded as stable and improving.

“There have been a few steps forward and one or two back, but on the whole we are delighted with Luke's progress” said his father John.

“There is still a long way to go and we take each day as it comes. But there are a few positives now which we are all hanging on to.”

July 21, 2006

Robbie Kessler made a good return to the Stoke side but could not prevent the Easy Rider Potters falling to a 56-40 defeat at Redcar last night (Thursday July 20).

July 19, 2006

Robbie Kessler has declared himself fit to ride at Redcar on Thursday but Paul Clews is unlikely to make the trip after injuring his leg in the narrow defeat at Berwick on Saturday.  "We just can't seem to get a full team out these days" said Dave tattum.

"It's good to have Robbie back and we will use rider replacement for Clewsy if he can't make it".

July 18, 2006

Paul Clews is doubtful for Stoke Easy Rider Potters trip to Redcar on Thursday. "I spoke to Paul earlier and he said that his leg is still swollen and painful to put weight on" said Dave Tattum.

Adam Allott has earned a pat on the back after donating part of his first wage packet to the Luke Priest Fund. "Adam got paid after the Mildenhall meeting last week and promptly put half of it in the fund for Luke which I thought was a terrific gesture" added Tattum.

July 17, 2006

There were varying degrees of success for both Stoke speedway teams over the weekend.

Stoke SAS Spitfires won 45-46 at Buxton on Sunday afternoon to complete a double over their near neighbours and take all three points on offer whilst the Easy Rider Potters overcame the odds to pick up the bonus point from a 49-44 defeat at Berwick on Saturday.

July 16, 2006

Gareth Isherwood gets a chance at number two in place of Kriss Irving.

July 14, 2006

Kriss Irving has told Stoke promoter Dave Tattum that he needs to take a bit of time out. "Kriss has struggled a bit since a big crash in the Conference Fours final and feels he needs to step back and regroup" said Tattum.

Loomer road will host a round of the Sidecar championship on Saturday, starting at 7.30pm. "These are awesome machines and the racing is very spectacular" added Tattum.

July 12, 2006

Robbie Kessler will miss tonight's (Wednesday) meeting at Kings Lynn after picking up a shoulder injury in the home defeat to Redcar on Saturday (writes Neil Evans).

Stoke will use rider replacement for Kessler and Rye House rider Robert Mear comes in at number seven in place of the injured Luke Priest.

Adam Lowe keeps his place in the SAS Spitfires side to meet Mildenhall at Loomer Road tonight.

There is a piece of positive news about Luke Priest: "I spoke to his father earlier and he said that Luke has had a drink of tea through a straw and has eaten a little bit of rice pudding" added Tattum.

"There is still a very long way to go and everyone will be pleased to hear that there is the slightest bit of improvement".

July 11, 2006

Dave Tattum has switched the riding order for the SAS Spitfires home meeting with Mildenhall on Wednesday.

Kriss Irving moves to number two where he partners new signing Adam Allott with Ben Barker switching to number four. Tattum has yet to decide who rides at number six though Scott Courtney has been made captain.

“This is not the league I really want to be in, but it`s a big opportunity for me to show promoters that I am still around” said Allott.

Stoke beat Mildenhall 44-46 at West Row earlier in the season.

July 10, 2006

Luke Priest remains in a critical but stable condition. Speaking on Saturday night at Loomer road, Priest's father, John, said: "Luke has had an operation today to repair a three inch tear in his bladder. We understand that has been a success which is obviously a high point for us."

"He has had an operation on his pelvis and an external fixator is in place. Work will go ahead on his broken ankle and elbow at a later date and they will have to reconstruct his rectum."

"Luke is still critical but sedated and stable. we are taking each day as it comes and some are better than others. We'd like to thank all the people who treated Luke at the track and in hospital as well as for all the words and thoughts of support."

July 8, 2006

Paul Clews makes a return to the Stoke Easy Rider Potters side as they take on Redcar at Loomer Road tonight.

Clews has been handed the captaincy after Alan Mogridge asked to step aside to concentrate on his own form.

"Paul was the logical choice and the meeting will be a big one for him and the team in general" said Dave Tattum.

"Redcar pushed us hard last time they were here and we are expecting another tough meeting."

Tattum has yet to announce who will replace the injured Luke Priest.

Redcar include Gary Havelock and Jack Hargreaves and Daniel Giffard at reserve.

***

Stoke have signed Adam Allott for their Conference League side.

"Adam comes in due to difficult circumstances, but this is a big opportunity for him and I am sure he will do a good job for us" said Dave Tattum.

Allott should make his SAS Spitfires debut on Wednesday against Mildenhall.

July 7, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires skipper Luke Priest will be under the supervision of a trauma team following the crash at Loomer Road on Wednesday which left the 21 year old with multiple injuries.

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum went to see Priest immediately after the fixture against Scunthorpe on Wednesday had been concluded and said: "Luke has a broken ankle, elbow and pelvis and in addition to that he suffered internal organ damage, the muscle was pulled away from the pelvis and he has a badly ripped rectum".

"They operated on him on Wednesday night and he will be supervised by a trauma team for about 48 hours after that."

"My understanding is that the situation is not life threatening, but the internal organs may need medical attention and that is why they are on stand by."

"Luke was out of it and is receiving help with his breathing. He has possibly been sedated to help ease the pain and we can only hope that he makes a swift and full recovery. I spoke to his father, John, at the hospital and he seemed to be OK."

Tattum asked that supporters don't continue to contact him for an update on the situation as that will be done through the official club channels. "I can understand that people are concerned about Luke because he is a smashing lad and it was obviously a nasty crash. But we will release what news we can when we have it through our press office" he said.

July 6, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires home meeting against Scunthorpe last night was marred by a horrific crash in Heat 6 which left Luke Priest needing lengthy on-track treatment before being taken to hospital.

Priest had been trailing Tai Woffinden and team mate Jack Hargreaves when Woffinden slid off just as they were entering the first turn on lap two. Hargreaves missed the spill but Priest laid his bike down in an instant and slid into and under the air fence at high speed.

Medical staff immediately rushed to his aid and the meeting was held up for around 80 minutes as Priest was treated before being transferred to hospital with possible multiple injuries.

"We won't know what sort of injuries Luke has just yet, but the lad was obviously in a lot of pain and we can only hope that he recovers as quickly as possible"

July 5, 2006

Stoke have named Paul Clews as the new captain of the Easy Rider Potters side after Alan Mogridge asked to step down, writes Neil Evans.

Meanwhile, Stoke SAS Spitfires have re-arranged a fixture against Mildenhall for next Wednesday, July 12th.

July 4, 2006

Ben Barker will face Wayne Carter in the Bronze Helmet match race prior to Stoke SAS Spitfires home fixture with Scunthorpe on Wednesday.

"It's a mouth watering fixture anyway because Scunthorpe are the form team in the division right now, but this gives it an extra dimension and it should be a terrific night of racing" said Dave Tattum.

"Ben is very keen to get his hands on the Bronze Helmet, but Wayne is a very experienced rider and knows his way around our track very well indeed".

July 3, 2006

The Spitfires face a big test on Wednesday (5th) when they take on Scunthorpe and the Potters host Redcar at Loomer Road on Saturday starting at 7.30pm.

"They are two very important meetings for us and they are sure to be hard but entertaining fixtures” said Dave Tattum".

A return to racing for Paul Clews and two wins for the Stoke SAS Spitfires. Those were the main ingredients in what turned out to be a good week for the Loomer Road club.

Clews had a brain scan on Thursday and was given the all clear. He made his return at Newcastle on Sunday (July 2,2006) and scored eight points in 54-41 defeat.

The SAS Spitfires picked up five points last week by beating Newport comfortably on Wednesday (June 28, 2006) where Luke Priest and Scott Courtney went through the card and John Branney dropped just one point, but scraped home against Plymouth on Sunday (July 2,2006) 45-44.

July 1, 2006

Paul Clews has been given the all clear and will take his place in the Stoke Easy Rider Potters side at Newcastle on Sunday.

"I have had the scan and been given the all clear" he said.

"It's a month since the accident so it will take me a few races to get tuned in; but riding in an away meeting first is helpful in some ways."

Stoke SAS Spitfires take on a strong Plymouth side at Loomer Road on Sunday. The Devils include Seemond Stephens and former Spitfires Tom Brown, Lee Smart and Jamie Westacott.

"It`s going to be a tough meeting but I think we can match them" said Dave Tattum.

"We looked very good in beating Buxton in midweek and would like to think we can carry on in that manner."

June 30, 2006

Paul Clews is expected to take his place in the Stoke Easy rider Potters side at Newcastle on Sunday.

June 29, 2006

Luke Priest and Scott Courtney were unbeaten in a solid team effort as Stoke SAS Spitfires beat Newport 59-35 at Loomer Road last night to take all three points on off.

"I thought it was a good team effort and we did'`t let up at all" said Luke Priest.

Promoter Dave Tattum added: "It's good to see the less experienced riders like Sam Dore and Adam Lowe making progress. But credit to Newport, they certainly had a go".

June 28, 2006

Sam Dore is expecting Stoke's victory in the Conference League Fours Championship on Saturday to propel them to a strong second half of the season. "I was there and it was a great atmosphere" he said.

"I was pleased for the boys and I think we can push on now, starting tonight when we meet Newport.  If we beat them, and I think we can, it will give us three points and boost our points total considerably."

Stoke will be without Ben Barker who rides for Somerset at Kings Lynn. John Branney goes in at two and the SAS Spitfires will use rider replacement at three. Adam Lowe gets another chance at six.

Newport include Karl Mason, Sam Hurst and Billy Legg and track Joe Reynolds and Nicki Glanz, the rider Dave Tattum was chasing over the winter, at reserve.

June 26, 2006

Stoke have called off their home meeting with Somerset on Saturday in order to save the supporters missing out on watching England play in the world Cup. "We know that a lot of supporters are following England's fortunes and we have taken this decision in order to save them making a choice" said Dave Tattum.

"Somerset are in full agreeance with the decision and we will re-arrange the fixture for later in the season".

Stoke SAS Spitfires face Newport at Loomer Road tomorrow looking to pick up their first double of the season, having won in south Wales earlier in the year.  "I think we can beat them and the three points will boost our tally" added Tattum.

June 25, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires won the Conference League Four Team championship last night (Saturday June 24) as Luke Priest beat Chris Johnson in a run off.

Ben Barker was undefeated through the final and would have taken the run off in asked. "Once we knew it was from the outside, I thought Luke should do it" he said.

"Luke had beaten Seemond Stephens twice and I hadn't gone from the outside, so I didn't know how the gates were working. I thought Luke rode a terrific race and this is just brilliant."

Barker felt the man of the match was Kriss Irving: "How he got up from that crash and carried on, I just don't know" he said, "but there was no way we could let him down after that."

Scott Courtney was pleased with his contribution: "I just wanted to justify my spot and score to my ability" he said. "There were one or two hiccups and it was a long wait between the semi and final. But it all came good in the end."

Chris Johnson was disappointed but said: "Luke rode a good race and was where I wanted to be. I just had to take the gamble and go for it."

Joint team manager John Adams said: "We held our belief and I thought it was a very good team effort. There is so much potential in this club and it's terrific for everyone concerned that the lads have won something."

Stoke asset Wayne Broadhurst was excluded in his first ride for bringing Lee Smart down. "He slowed up going in to the turn and I just went for the gap. I'm really not too sure the referee made the right decision" he said.

Kriss Irving got up from an alarming looking crash in Heat 4 to take another ride despite being badly knocked about. "I came here to be a winner and there was no way they were going to stop me going out again" he said.

"My bike is a write-off almost and my second bike was not ready. But the third place I got in my other ride helped us to the run off and I'm just so pleased for the club."

June 24, 2006

Stoke promoter feels that the Conference League Fours Final tonight at Loomer Road which starts at 7pm is wide open. "There are four or five very strong teams in the line up and the result is wide open" he said.

"We would like to see a Stoke win of course. But the important thing is to put on a good meeting and I'm sure the best team on the night will pull through".

Stoke asset Wayne Broadhurst makes a return in Boston's colours. "It's a meeting I'm looking forward to" he said.

June 23, 2006

Luke Priest scored 14 points out of a total of 26 as SAS Spitfires were hammered 66-26 at Plymouth last night. "It was a very poor effort by the riders and far too many were content to blame the track than look at themselves" said team manager John woolridge.

June 23, 2006

Luke Priest, Scott Courtney, Kriss Irving and Ben Barker wear Stoke SAS Spitfires colours in the CL Fours Final at Loomer Road tomorrow.

"It`s going to be a tough meeting, but one we can win if we get it right" said Priest.

"There is a lot to play for in every race and we have to make each one count. But it`s not going to be easy."

June 21, 2006

Trent Leverington is hoping to have turned the corner in terms of form following his 10 point haul against Kings Lynn last Saturday.

"We made a few changes to the set up, though the big thing for me was having the track back to how we like it" he said.

There have been comings and goings in the Stoke SAS Spitfires squad with John Branney and Maurice Crang coming in whilst Wayne Broadhurst looks like joining Boston for the rest of the season.

“Jack Hargreaves is unable to commit to the Spitfires and we have been a bit weak at reserve, so we had to look at alternatives” said Dave Tattum.

Branney and Crang are in line to make home debuts against Buxton tomorrow (Wednesday, June 21) whilst Broadhurst should start on Friday against the same opposition.

June 19, 2006

***

Meanwhile, Stoke SAS Spitfires fell to a disappointing 64-28 defeat at Scunthorpe.

“We were very depleted and though the riders got going towards the end, it really was a disappointing effort” said Dave Tattum.

The Premier League Best Pairs at Glasgow was rained off.

June 17, 2006

Dave Tattum has urged the supporters to get behind the Stoke team tonight as they take on league favourites Kings Lynn.

"I know we have struggled a bit over the past few weeks, but these are the same riders that have thrilled the supporters in the past and we need to get behind them now" he said.

Stoke will be without Paul Clews again whilst Kings Lynn are at full strength.

Robbie Kessler and Mark Lemon travel to Glasgow tomorrow for the PL Best Pairs.

"Glasgow hasn`t been the best of tracks for me this season, but my view is that I am due to turn that around sometime and why not tomorrow" said Lemon.

"Robbie is going well and is a heck of a trapper. If I can have a half decent Glasgow meeting, we just might make some kind of progress."

June 16, 2006

Stoke promoter has stressed that the Easy Rider Potters need to pull out all the stops when they face Kings Lynn at Loomer Road on Saturday.

"They are a form team and we need to up our game to beat them" he said.

Corbetts Bookmakers will sponsor the Conference League Fours Final at Loomer Road on June 24.

Stoke SAS Spitfires just missed out on winning the bonus point despite beating Rye House 50-43 at Loomer Road last night.

June 14, 2006

Stoke fell to a 60-32 defeat at Isle of Wight last night.

"Our heads are a bit down at the moment and we seem to be running in to loads of bad luck" said team manager John Adams.

"Barrie Evans and Alan Mogridge seized engines and Robbie Kessler stopped a couple of times - but the bottom line is that we can't keep blaming bad luck.

In fairness, we were sharp out of the traps. But they ride the place so well and just passed us time and time again.

I thought young Luke had a good meeting and Trent was on the pace. But it's hard to justify such big losses and I'm disappointed and frustrated."

June 13, 2006

Paul Clews is likely to miss Stoke Easy Rider Potters trip to Isle of Wight tonight.

Clews says that he has virtually recovered from his crash on June 4 but because he was knocked unconscious, he now has to have medical clearance before he can ride again.

"It was only something that came to light at the end of last week and Dave tattum is trying to clarify what sort of clearance I need" he said.

"It might be that I need a brain scan or it could just be a general medical. We don`t know."

June 10, 2006

Stoke SAS Spitfires put up a very good effort before going down 51-43 at Boston last night (June 9).

"Bearing in mind that some of the riders had hardly raced for a few weeks, I thought we did very well to lose by just eight points against a strong home side like Boston are" said Dave Tattum.

"It's a shame that we didn't have Ben Barker otherwise we might well have won there. Our lack of practice probably told on the night, but the lads can still be pleased with their performance."

STOKE 43:  L Priest 12, G Isherwood 2, J Hargreaves 9, K Irving 7+1, S Courtney 11, S Dore 1, A Lowe 1.

June 9, 2006

Team manager John Adams was pleased enough with the performance at Sheffield last night despite a 57-38 defeat.

"We did have a couple of pieces of misfortune when Mark Lemon shed a chain whilst leading Heat 1 and Alan Mogridge was harshly excluded in Heat 4 – but we were also beaten by a very quick side on their home track" conceded Adams.

"I thought there was a very good effort from Luke Priest and Trent Leverington is getting better with each meeting...

I'm not too despondent and we knew that Sheffield would throw everything at us because they needed all three points to reach the semi finals."

Stoke will stage the Conference League Fours Final at Loomer Road on Saturday June 24.

June 8, 2006

Paul Clews has virtually ruled himself out of riding at Sheffield tonight.

The Stoke number three is still feeling the effects of his crash on Sunday and said last night "I have pain at the top of my arm and also feel quite unsteady, so I think it is unlikely that I will be at Sheffield".

Stoke SAS Spitfires travel to Boston tomorrow. "It's not the easiest of places to get a result at but we will do our best" said Dave tattum.

June 7, 2006

Paul Clews is facing a late fitness test following his crash at Loomer Road on Sunday before deciding if he can ride for Stoke at Sheffield on Thursday. "Paul is more unsteady on his feet now than he was on Monday" said his wife, Sharon.

"Both Robbie and myself have been going well enough and hopefully we can make something happen on the day".

June 4, 2006

Stoke Easy Rider Potters take on Berwick tonight at Loomer Road starting at 7.30pm looking to boost their league tally.

The Potters are sitting on five points after beating Newport home and away but have not added to it since. But a good showing at Redcar on Thursday lifted the mood and Dave Tattum feels the Potters will be too strong for a Berwick side that welcomes Lee Smethills and Michal Makovsky back from the side that lost 58-37 at Loomer Road about three weeks ago.

"I think they will be stronger this time and you can never underestimate them" pointed out Tattum.

"No meeting is easy for us around Loomer Road because any team seems to come here and do well. But we're more than capable of beating them and beating them well."

June 2, 2006

"The pressure is off a touch in this competition and that could help us" he said.

"I'd like to think that we can challenge for the bonus point at least but we will have to see. After all, it is our first trip to the venue."

“Don`t forget, we start at 6.30pm tonight because there is so much going on. But that is what tonight is all about, plenty for the supporters to enjoy.”

As for the league meetings, Mark lemon said “We are capable as a team of picking up results anywhere. We just need to transfer that potential in to points on the track.”

May 25, 2006

Paul Pickering has been given some positive news regards an improvement in the arm injury that has kept him away from racing since the first week of the 2005 season.

"I saw a specialist last week and he says that there isdefinite growth in the bones now, so much so that he took the metal external fixator that I have had on for 14 months off" said Pickering.

"There is still a long way to go. But at long last I feel we are on the right track and I'm hoping to start physio as soon as possible".

23rd May

Barrie Evans has received a pat on the back from Stoke promoter Dave Tattum. Evans suffered a number of problems at Somerset on Friday - a blown motor, electrical problems and a cracked frame - but turned things around the next night with a double figure score.

"It isn't the first time Barrie and his dad have worked late in to the night to put things right and we really appreciate their efforts" said Tattum.

Somerset will use rider replacement for the injured Glenn Phillips whilst the fixture sees Ben Barker, who rides for the SAS Spitfires, riding at reserve for the Rebels.

17th May

Stoke SAS Spitfires home meeting with Mildenhall tonight has been called off due to a waterlogged track.

"We had a lot of rain before yesterday which left the track very wet and we were unable to do all the necessary work" said promoter Dave Tattum who is reluctant to call meetings off. "There is a forecast of rain throughout today which is why we took the early option to cancel the meeting. That is not something I do lightly, but the weather has been against us again".

16th May

Stoke SAS Spitfires should be back to full strength  for the visit of Mildenhall tomorrow with Jack Hargreaves available to return to the side.

Stoke won 44-46 in Suffolk a couple of weeks back and SAS Spitfires skipper Luke priest is expecting his side to complete a double.  "With all due respect, these are the sort of fixtures we must win if we are going to challenge in the league" he said.

Sam Dore was practising after the meeting last Sunday, as was former Spitfire Gary Flint who is on the look out for rides. "It's been difficult for me to find a team place, but my bikes are ready and I'm available if something crops up".

"All three meetings are for Premier Trophy points and we are looking for a good showing in each one."

"I was pleased enough with last weekend but I can do better."

this season and it`s an opportunity to get some quality track time in” he said.

6th May

Dave Tattum has called for Stoke to build up a big lead against Newport tonight before the two teams meet again in south Wales tomorrow.

"We have won home and away for the last two seasons and I want that to continue" he said.

"We have to start nailing teams here at home and then finish off the job in the away fixtures. May is going to be a busy month for us and we need to get points on the board.

"Hopefully the crowd will get behind the riders tonight and we can get two points on the board."

5th May

Stoke Easy Rider Potters start their league programme on Saturday when they face Newport before travelling to south Wales on Sunday for the return.

Stoke Easy Rider Potters have made a change to their line up by bringing in Trent Leverington to replace Michael Coles.

"I'd like to thank Michael for his efforts. But he wasn`t at ease and I think Trent will stiffen the team quite a bit."

Leverington makes his debut on Saturday when Stoke take on Newport at Loomer Road.

"I'm really looking forward to it because Stoke is a club and a track I rate highly" said the Australian who comes in on loan from Glasgow.

3rd May

Alan Mogridge has been fined £250 on top of a one meeting ban for not riding in the Championship of Great Britain qualifying round on April 22.

"I knew the potential repercussions, but my priorities were with my club" said Mogridge.
"Others felt the same, but I was the only one who made a stance. It's a matter of principle, if a very costly one".

“We were solid throughout and I thought we showed a terrific response and attitude to the meeting” said Tattum.

“It was fierce out there at times because Workington are used to winning meetings. But we matched them and more in every department and I thought it was our best team effort this season by a long way.

“That will give us a lot of confidence to go to their place on Monday and see what we come away with. The bonus point is definitely a possibility”.

29th April

Stoke Easy Rider Potters face Workington home and away over the Bank Holiday period with a third meeting in as many days for Luke Priest as Stoke SAS Spitfires travel to Mildenhall on Sunday.

Workington, which lost at Somerset last night in the league, are the form team in the northern section of the Premier Trophy and come to Loomer Road tonight full of confidence.

“They are getting results everywhere and with the likes of James Wright, Garry Stead and Paul Thorp in the top set plus Aidan Collins at reserve, they will pose a strong threat” conceded Dave Tattum.

“But if we ride to our full potential we can match any side. It`s just a case of all the pieces coming together and the riders know the score.

“We will have Alan Mogridge back and Mark Lemon has declared himself fit after two bad knocks last Sunday at Glasgow.

“I`m expecting a big crowd tonight which should work in our favour. I have spoken to the riders throughout the week and they are certainly up for this one”.

"To be fair, it was our first away meeting of the season, though some of the lads are struggling," added Adams.

23rd April

Sheffield have raced in more meetings than Stoke so far this term with the Potters starting just their third fixture.

“It`s been a slow start, but the team looks capable and I`d like to start off one of these derby meetings with a win” said Michael Coles.

STOKE:  M Lemon, M Coles, P Clews, R Kessler, A Mogridge, B Evans, L Priest.

SHEEFIELD:  R Ashworth, B Wilson, E Sanchez, K Legault, A Compton, P Cooper, B Compton.

6th April

Robbie Kessler has started putting together the pieces of his testimonial meeting which will go ahead at Stoke on May 27.

“I am going to run a Four Team Tournament featuring Stoke, Hull, Sheffield and Wolverhampton” he said.

“I also want to put on some moto-cross races including big jumps and make it afun night for everyone.”

4th April

Jack Hargreaves has been added to the line up for the British Under 21 qualifying round at Stoke tomorrow (Wednesday) bringing the total of 'home riders' in the field up to four.

Hargreaves joins Luke Priest, Kriss Irving and Gareth Isherwood in the line up which includes Premier league regulars Joel parsons, Jason King, James Brundle, Jamie Robertson and James Cockle.

Hargreaves initial round at Buxton last Sunday was rained off and will now be staged at Rye House.  Hargreaves replaces Lee Strudwick at Loomer Road.

"It was always a strong looking field and it has only increased with Jack`s inclusion" said Dave Tattum.

The top three finishers qualify for the British Under 21 Final at Kings Lynn later this month.

1st April

Dave Tattum is expecting a tough match tonight when Stoke Easy Rider Potters face Newcastle at Loomer Road.

"Stoke have yet to contest a Premier Trophy fixture whilst Newcastle got thumped at Sheffield on Thursday" pointed out Tattum.

"That means both teams will be really keen to get into winning ways and I can see Newcastle running us very close.

"They have three very strong heat leaders in Grieves, Franc and Stancl and Grieves seems to score maximums around here for fun.

"But we are really up for this and are keen to get points on the board."

Jamie Robertson and Adam McKinna will be back at Loomer Road on Wednesday for the British Under 21 qualifier.

STOKE:  M Lemon, M Coles, P Clews, R Kessler, A Mogridge, B Evans, L Priest.

NEWCASTLE:  G Stancl, C Henry, M Hauzinger, J Franc, J Grieves, J Robertson, A McKinna.

31st March

Stoke Easy Rider Potters are hoping for third time lucky tomorrow when they face Newcastle at Loomer Road.

The two teams met at Brough Park last Sunday though the meeting was called off before a race was completed.

Stoke have yet to race a meeting in the Premier trophy whilst the Diamonds have completed two, winning 47-46 at home to Workington but being heavily beaten at Sheffield last night.

"They are a decent side and have riders that go very well around here" said Dave Tattum.

30th March

Stoke have added to their asset base by signing 19 year old Australian Sam Dore.

The teenager caught the eye during practice sessions and has signed a full contract with the club.

“We were really impressed with his attitude and commitment and, due to him having British patriality through his grandmother, Sam will be able to slot straight in to our Spitfires side” said Dave Tattum.

Dore added: “Securing a team place in Britain was my ambition and I am really pleased to have joined Stoke.

“It looks to be a very well run outfit and I'm hoping to prove the promoters made the right decision.”

28th March

Stoke will stage one of the three qualifying rounds for the British Under 21 championship. Buxton and Scunthorpe stage the other two with the Stoke round going ahead on Wednesday April 5 starting at 7.30pm.

Luke Priest and Kriss Irving are in the Loomer Road qualifier whilst Jack Hargreaves and Ben Barker race at Buxton.  Gareth Isherwood is the reserve at Stoke.

"It would be terrific if we could see at least one of the riders getting through to the final, but the competition is very steep indeed" said Dave Tattum.

"We are looking forward to hold one of the rounds though and we have the likes of Jamie Robertson, James Brundle, James Cockle and Joel Parsons in the Stoke section.

"There is a massive incentive for all the riders and I suspect it will produce a lot of hard racing."

27th March

Stoke Easy Rider Potters have yet to turn a wheel in the Premier Trophy competition after both their meetings over the weekend were washed out.

That fact means that Stoke will have raced just one meeting throughout the month of March when they face Newcastle at Loomer Road on Saturday, April 1 starting at 7.30pm.

“It`s not ideal, but a lot of teams are in a similar position and Newcastle themselves lost two meetings over the weekend” pointed out Dave Tattum.

Tattum was full of praise for the referee, Dave Watters, and the two captains, Alan Mogridge and Shane Parker, after the Potters home meeting against Glasgow was called off at around 6.10pm on Saturday.

“It was disappointing, but I thought the referee and the two captains were brilliant in the way that they looked at it from all angles before reaching the decision” he continued.

“It wasn`t the track, in fact the referee said that he was willing to give it a go. The problem was the visibility and though it is always frustrating to call a meeting off, particularly with both teams there and spectators waiting to come in, it was the right decision because it hardly stopped raining all night.”

Tattum pointed out that news of the American Dream Team appearing at Loomer Road some time next month was no more than speculation just yet and has not been agreed.

26th March

Stoke`s away meeting at Newcastle on Sunday was rained off leaving the Easy Rider Potters having not turned a wheel all weekend.

The home meeting with Glasgow on Saturday was also off to leave the Potters, whose next meeting is April 1, with just one meeting under their belts throughout the month of March.

25th March

Luke Priest hopes to put last weeks gremlins behind him and show his true potential when Stoke Easy Rider Potters take on Glasgow at Loomer Road tonight.

"We have spent a lot of time in the workshop this week trying to get the right set up and I`m just keeping my fingers crossed that we have found the right formula"
he said.

"Our season starts here and I am determined to do my bit."

The Easy rider Potters have not always fared well in the Premier trophy competition, though joint team manager John Adams thinks they might upset a few predictions this year.

"The mood in the camp was first rate last week and we can build on that good performance against the Danes" he said.

"Mind you, it is a tough start with Glasgow tonight and Newcastle away tomorrow. But we can get something out of this competition, I`m sure of that."

24th March

Stoke Easy Rider Potters go in search of their first Premier Trophy points this weekend when they face Glasgow at Loomer Road on Saturday and then travel to Newcastle on Sunday.

Stoke have just one meeting under their belts, a home win last Saturday, whilst Glasgow will be brimming with confidence after winning away at Berwick last weekend.

“We`ve had some terrific battles with Glasgow around Loomer Road over the past few years and I see tomorrow`s fixture as being no different” said Potters skipper Alan Mogridge.

“The Premier Trophy is not a competition we have done well in previously, but that is not to say it will be the same this year.

“We looked fairly sharp last week in beating the Denmark Select and I am sure everyone is keen to hit the ground running and get points in the bag as early as we can.”

Glasgow have revamped their line up over the winter and brought in Danny Bird from Reading to partner Shane Parker in a very strong spearhead. Kauko Nieminen is another newcomer and the Finn can look back on some strong Loomer Road performances in the past.

“Having won away last week, they will have a bit of confidence and it is a team that always goes well around our place” added Dave Tattum.

“We are going to leave our pairings as they were last week because I thought the balance looked comfortable.

They worked well for each other and we will need all that again to beat Glasgow.”

STOKE: M Lemon, M Coles, P Clews, R Kessler, A Mogridge, B Evans, L Priest.

GLASGOW:  D Bird, D McAllan, L Dicken, K Nieminen, S Parker, R Ksiezak, J Cockle.

23rd March

Stoke are considering opening their Conference League season in early April with a fixture against the touring America Dream Team.

“We really want to come back and show the Stoke public that last season was very much a ‘bad day at the office’” said the Dream Team manager Laurence Rogers.

“I have spoken to Dave Tattum about coming back here in a few weeks time and we very much hope that it comes off so that we can put the record straight.”

22nd March

Luke Priest has been burning the midnight oil ahead of Stoke`s opening Premier Trophy fixtures this weekend after finding points hard to come by last Saturday.

“In many ways I`m not too worried because I am quite certain it is down to us getting the right set up rather than the jockey” he said, “though it was far from acceptable.

“Part of the reason was that I did quite a bit of damage to the bike on press-and-practice day and we had to change some parts. They just didn't knit together as we would have wanted and we have been trying to put that right this week".

19th March

Stoke Easy Rider Potters opened up their 2006 account with a solid win over a Denmark Select side at Loomer Road on Saturday.

Stoke looked more the compact of the two teams and new boys Mark Lemon and Michael Coles both impressed on their debuts. Lemon dropped just one in five outings and Coles won many of his points from the back. “I was pleased with tonight and the long drive home will be all the more positive for that” said Coles.

Stoke took an early lead but the scores were level after five races after Robbie Kessler shed a chain and ploughed in to the safety fence. “It all happened so quickly but the fence cushioned my fall” he said.

Coles won Heat 8 and skipper Alan Mogridge headed tactical rider Charlie Gjedde in Heat 11 as Stoke maintained a 10 point lead.  Lemon took his fourth win of the night in Heat 13 and Kessler his third in the next before Denmark finished off with a 4-2.

“I thought there were a lot of plus signs and if we can keep that sort of form going, we will be in with a shout” said team manager john Adams.

STOKE 51:  M Lemon 14, M Coles 7+1, P Clews 6+1, R Kessler 9, A Mogridge 7+1, B Evans 7, L Priest 1+1.

DENMARK SELECT 41:  C Gjedde 14, T Madsen 4+1, M Korneliussen 11, H Moller 2, M Risager 4, J Raun 3+1, J Bethell 3+1.

Managers view

Stoke team manager John Adams was pleased with the Easy rider potters home win over a Denmark Select at Loomer road last night. "I thought there were a lot of good signs and that we rode as a team" he said.

Mark Lemon dropped just one point in five outings and Michael Coles earned some of his points from the back in a solid effort by the home side with Robbie Kessler winning the three rides he finished.

16th March

There will be a trio of speedway legends at Loomer Road on Saturday as the Easy Rider Potters open their season with a challenge against a Denmark Select.

Tony Briggs, the man behind the newly implemented air safety fence at Stoke, the first of its kind in the Premier League, will be there to listen to views - and accompanying him will be his father, multi World Champion Barry Briggs and one of England`s all time greats, Terry Betts.

"Tony has assured us that he will be there on opening night and that his father and Terry Betts will be there as well" revealed promoter Dave Tattum.

"It is tremendous news and I am sure the supporters will love to see such household names as Briggs and Betts".

15th March

Stoke riders made the most of their track time at Loomer Road on Wednesday at a well attended press-and-practice session.
“All the riders looked sharp and keen and you could sense how pleased they were to get out on the track after weeks of frustration due to the weather” said promoter Dave Tattum.

Spitfires riders Kriss Irving, Jack Hargreaves, Ben Barker, Scott Courtney and Gareth Isherwood also made the most of the opportunity and Barker in particular put in plenty of laps. “I had a great time out there and we tried lots of different things such as racing lines and engine set-ups” said the 18 year old.

The Easy Rider Potters face a Denmark Select at Loomer Road on Saturday (7.30pm) and Robbie Kessler is optimistic of a good start for the home side.  “It`s going to be hard to match their top men, but overall I think we can pinch this one and move on from there” said the Germany international.
STOKE:  M Lemon, M Coles, P Clews, R Kessler, A Mogridge, B Evans, L Priest.
DENMARK SELECT:  C Gjedde, T P Madsen, M Korneliussen, H Moller, M Risager, J Raun, J Bethell.

Denmark team manager Jan Staechmann includes four Elite League riders in the line up - Charlie Gjedde, Morten Risager, Tom P Madsen and Mads Korneliussen - with the top five completed by Edinburgh`s Henrik Moller.
"It`s a terrific line up and I`d like to publicly thank Jan for all the hard work he has put in to this fixture" said Dave Tattum. "We wanted a stern test and there is no doubt that the side that Denmark are tracking will give us exactly that. It should be terrific entertainment for the supporters and a cracking way to kick start the new season".
Jonas Raun and Buxton`s Jonathan Bethell complete the side.

Spitfires
Having brought in two new faces in the shape of Ben Barker and Scott Courtney, Dave Tattum has added a raft of more familiar names to the Stoke Spitfires line up.
Luke Priest will once again skipper the side - and also included are Jack Hargreaves, Kriss Irving and Gareth Isherwood.
“To be fair, I think the side being put together has a good look about it. We all know what Jack and Luke are capable of and Barker and Courtney have the ability to be big scorers too” said Dave Tattum.
Priest, who will double up between the Spitfires and Potters added “I have to agree with the promotion about the look of the team".

12th March 2006

Practice day
Stoke's team practice on Saturday and a training school on Sunday were cancelled - due to the weather - leaving the riders short on track time ahead of their opening fixture against a Denmark Select side at Loomer Road next Saturday (18th).
“It was unfortunate, but there was nothing we could do about the weather” said Dave Tattum, who expects the riders to make the most of the press-and-practice session on Wednesday.
“The riders have been doing whatever they can and I am sure they will be doing lap after lap on Wednesday to sharpen themselves up for our opener next week”.

Stoke have added Scott Courtney to their Spitfires line up.
Courtney will be the second newcomer to the team following the signing of Ben Barker - ironically the rider that Courtney replaced in the Oxford side last year following Barker`s injury here at Loomer Road.
The 23 year old said "I have not ridden much since a bad knock in 2002 but the few meetings I had last year really whetted my appetite and I am keen to make the most of this opportunity.
"I am putting some good equipment together and will go to the press-and-practice session next Wednesday and then look for as many rides as I can get before the season starts".

Stoke have allowed Tom Brown to speak to Conference League newcomers Plymouth. "Tom feels that it is in his better interests to try his luck with a new club and we won't stand in his way if it helps him progress as a rider" said Dave Tattum.

6th March 2006

Stoke have made their first signing for the Spitfires Conference League side after 17 year old Ben Barker was named over the weekend.

"Ben will come in as a Grade 6 rider and I think he will do us a terrific job from that position" said Dave Tattum.

"I do have other riders in mind and things will start to fall in place this week I hope."

Barker broke his thigh on his last visit to Loomer Road but says he is fully recovered.

"I have been out on a bike three times recently and everything feels fine" he said.

"In fact, it was me who asked about going to Stoke because it is a place I rate highly and I am looking forward to riding for the Spitfires.

"I will also ride for Somerset in the Premier League and that will give me a busy but varied season."

4th March 2006

Stoke Potters will open their season on March 18 against a Denmark Select at Loomer Road.

“I am not sure of the make up of the side, but Denmark team manager Jan Staechmann has confirmed that he will bring a Denmark Select team to open our season” said promoter Dave Tattum.

“We wanted something a bit special to open the season bearing in mind that it will be the first time the air safety fence will have been used in a Premier League fixture.

“I think this will give the riders a good work out before we start our Premier Trophy campaign the following weekend.”

Tattum hopes to run a full team practice session at Loomer Road on March 11, weather permitting.

Workington promoter Graham Drury asked permission to speak to Stoke riders for an open meeting which kicks off the Comets season on March 11.

“I said that he could ask but I am not sure any of our riders were in a position to take up the booking” added Tattum.

2nd March 2006

Tony Briggs, the man behind the innovation, has given the thumbs up to Stoke putting in an air safety fence at Loomer Road, the first of its kind in the Premier and Conference Leagues.

Briggs, the son of multi world champion Barry Briggs, said “My career ended when I hit the fence hard at Coventry and I broke my neck.

“I have been around speedway all my life and used those experiences to make this particular air fence.

“I was down at Stoke last week helping to install and I think the people there are doing a great job.

“I think it will look great around Stoke and I hope to be back for the opening night to see what people think.”

25th February 2006

Stoke will hold their press and practice session on Wednesday March 15.

Riders from both the Potters and Spitfires teams will be there and the itinerary is as follows:

Riders meet in the bar for 12 noon to meet the press.

Potters race jackets handed out.

Photographs with riders in race gear from around 12.45pm and out on track after that.

Members of the public will be admitted from 12.45pm.

Admission prices for Stoke Potters meetings in 2006 will be:

Adults £12.00 to include a programme.
Senior citizens £9.00 to include a programme Juniors £4.00 to include a programme only when available.

24th February 2006

Cyril Chell of Stoke Speedway`s main sponsor, Easy Rider, has been a regular at Loomer Road during the preparatory work in installing the new air safety fence.

“I`ve taken a huge interest in the project as a whole and I have very high hopes that this will prove even further that Stoke can be one of the top venues in the Premier League” said the man who was instrumental in getting the project up and running in the first place.

“No one likes to see riders injured and the knocks that Paul Pickering and Jan Staechmann took last year really made me think long and hard about what could be done to cut back on the risks.

“Nothing is foolproof because speedway is a hard sport. But I`m really pleased about the way we are going and maybe other clubs will follow suit at a later date.

“A lot of people have been down at the stadium grafting away and I have tried to do my bit. There`s not a lot to see just yet, but once it is fully installed and operational, I am sure it will increase the entertainment value as well as the safety aspect here at Loomer Road.”

22nd February 2006

Tom Brown has held talks with Stoke about riding in the Conference League side, though the 21 year old says he wants to keep all his options open.

"This is a big season for me and I want to be in the right place to give myself every chance of making a breakthrough in to the Premier League" he said.
"I really enjoy Stoke and that might be my best route. But other clubs have shown an interest, and I just think it is right to weigh up all the options".

Brown rode for Weymouth last season and it, plus Plymouth, if either come to the tapes in 2006, could possibly interest Brown.

20th February 2006

Stoke held a successful Meet the Riders Night on Saturday, despite the absence of Mark Lemon and Michael Coles.

"Mark got a cancellation to go in to hospital for a sinus operation and Colesy unfortunately broke down en-route" said Dave Tattum.

"Nonetheless, it was a very good night and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. All the Potters riders plus Jack Hargreaves and Gareth Isherwood got up to say a few words and it all went down very well."

Alan Mogridge has been named as captain for the 2006 season.
"He was the obvious choice and a rider who has the respect of everyone" concluded the promoter.

15th February 2006

Stoke will hold a Meet the Riders Night at Loomer Road stadium on Saturday February 18 starting at 7.30pm.

"It should be interesting and gives the supporters an opportunity to chat and take photographs" said promoter Dave Tattum.

"There will be some familiar faces, but Mark Lemon and Michael Coles will be along as well and it will be interesting to hear what everyone has been up to over the winter".

13th February 2006

Stoke riders Luke Priest, Wayne Broadhurst and Jack Hargreaves acquited themselves well at the indoor ice meeting at Telford on Sunday.

Broadhurst made a dream return to the ice after three years away by winning the Best pairs event with Tony Atkin, the third time the duo have take the title.

“It was a great moment for me and such a good feeling to be back winning races again” said Broadhurst.

Priest scored three points in the British Open Championship whilst Hargreaves helped England to a win over rest of the World and then scored six in the British Open Championship.

Hargreaves also won the Easy Rider Monkey Bike championships during the interval attractions.

9th February 2006

Stoke will stage the Conference League Four Team Championship final at Loomer Road for the third successive season.

"Our fellow promoters obviously think we are doing something right and we`re really pleased to have been handed the championship final yet again" said Dave Tattum.

8th February 2006

Stoke Potters have completed their line up for the 2006 season after handing Luke Priest the number seven race jacket.

"Luke had a really decent season last year and showed signs that he could breach the gap between the Conference and Premier Leagues.

"We feel he is ready and capable of being a really good number seven for us this year" said Dave Tattum.

Priest added "This is exactly what I needed and see this as my big chance to get going in the Premier League.

"I love Stoke as a track and if I can get some confidence in my home meetings, hopefully I can take that away as well."

2nd February 2006

Stoke speedway fans travelling to the indoor ice meeting at telford on February 12 will have three riders to support despite Jan Staechmann withdrawing through injury.

Wayne Broadhurst, Luke Priest and Jack Hargreaves are all pencilled in and will have varying degrees of involvement over the two meetings on the same day.

Hargreaves is determined to make an impression and has had a motor tuned by Graham Jones.

"I really want to do well in this meeting and Graham knows what it takes to get around the ice" said the 17 year old who will ride for Redcar in the Premier league this coming season.

Staechmann has ruled himself out after failing to overcome shoulder and back injuries picked up last April.

31st January 2006

Jack Hargreaves expects to hear today that he will spend the 2006 season gaining Premier League experience with newcomers to the league, Redcar.

“I have made no secret of my desire to be involved in the Premier League this season” said the 17 year old.

30th January 2006

Dave Tattum expects to start putting a Spitfires line up fairly quickly, providing the outcome of today's Conference League AGM in Rugby doesn't throw up any surprises.

“I will be at Rugby and my hope is that it will be pretty much business as usual” he said.
“There are one or two question marks, there always are. But we want to run a team in the Conference League and hopefully there won`t be too many changes.
“Once all that has been clarified, I will start putting a team together. I have plenty of ideas but can`t do anything until after the AGM”.

25th January 2006

Jack Hargreaves looks like moving away from Loomer Road for the 2006 season in order to further his Premier league career.

"I`m a bit disappointed at not being included at Stoke. But this will be a big year for me and I don`t want to waste it" said the 17 year old who has been linked with the newly formed Redcar.

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum says Hargreaves will only go out on loan. "Jack has a big future in the sport and we want to see him progress.

Unfortunately, because of the new regulations, we cannot fit him in for this season.

"A spell away might do him good and we hope he comes back a better rider."

23rd January 2006

Barrie Evans will be back at Loomer Road next season after signing a Stoke contract over the weekend.

"Dave Tattum told me that I figured in his plans, but it`s good to get things in the open" he said.

"This will be a big season for me and I want to make a good start and then think about putting pressure on others.

"I`m really keen and going back to Stoke was always my first hope."

Promoter Dave Tattum added "Barrie deserved another chance after a very good first year with us. He has loads of potential and we will help all we can."

21st January 2006

Work has begun on erecting the new air fence at Loomer Road which will be the first of its kind in either the Premier or Conference League's.

“We have started to take the bends down and we have as many as 44 posts to erect which are necessary to take the weight of the new fence” said Dave Tattum.

"The weather has held us up a bit, but if we have a good spell now, we can crack on."

Tattum added: "There has been a huge amount of interest in the erection of this air fence at Loomer Road and we have even had a television company making enquiries as to when it will be up and running.

"Bearing all that in mind which could make either news or sports stories, maybe I could remind people that there panels available for sponsorship and that anyone interested in this rare opportunity can contact me at the stadium or on 07789 028 003."

19th January 2006

Kriss Irving is approaching the 2006 season with the view that he has a point to prove.

"I want to get on in the sport and the only way to do that is on the track" said the 18 year who has been told that he figures in the Spitfires plans.

"Things are starting to happen off track as I landed a job just before Christmas and am putting as much as I can into new equipment. I should have three GM motors for the start of the season and I`m very optimistic that I can improve as much again as I did in 2005."

17th January 2006

Stoke asset Tom Brown has thrown his hat in to the ring for one of the two reserve berths yet to be filled for the Potters 2006 season.

“I feel ready to make the next step up now and my main hope for the coming season is to secure a Premier League berth” said the 21 year old from south Wales who rode for the Spitfires in 2004.

“I had a good season with Weymouth in the Conference League last year and my confidence and form was high going in to the winter. I have been working hard and feel really fit and I just think the time is right to try my hand at the next level.

“I have spoken to Dave Tattum and will just have to wait and see what he intends to do”.

14th January 2006

Jan Staechmann is hoping to be fit for the indoor ice meeting at Telford on February 12.

The Dane, who missed much of the 2005 season and has ruled himself out of the coming campaign, hopes to be in a position to challenge for a fourth British Open Championship. “Much depends on my fitness” he said.
“I cannot contest a full season but I am hoping to be at Telford as a one-off. This year will be the twenty first staging of the event and it will be a terrific occasion, which is just one of the reasons why I want to be there.
“I am still having treatment on my shoulder injuries and have now learned that I have disc concerns in my back.
“But I still feel that I can possibly ride in one meeting and am doing all I can to be ready”.

Wednesday 11th January 2006

Robbie Kessler is in negotiations with Stoke promoter Dave Tattum about securing a convenient date at Loomer Road for his testimonial meeting.

The 32 year old Germany international is a Sheffield asset, but said “I really want to hold this event at Stoke and I`m talking to Dave Tattum about where I can slot it in to the fixture list.

“To be honest with, I want this to be much more than just a race meeting.

“I`ve got lots of friends in other motor sports such as moto-cross and cars and I`m working on making this more of a day rather than just a speedway meeting. Then I`m looking at having a live band and creating a good atmosphere and generally having a good time with the supporters".

Kessler was the highest scoring Potter with six points in the New Year Classic at Newport last Sunday. Paul Clews scored four and Michael Coles five, though the Stoke newcomer earned a big pat on the back after laying his bike down very quickly when Karl Mason fell right in front of him. “It's pure instinct, you just do it without realising it” said Coles.

Monday 9th January 2006

Mark Lemon has flown home to Australia as part of his pre season build up.

"I have been busy renovating a house and I felt it was important to get in a break before the season starts" said the 32 year old.

Lemon is hoping to have an operation to cure some sinus problems before the season gets under way.

Thursday 5 January 2006

Stoke asset Jon Armstrong is on the verge of joining Mildenhall full time, providing the Premier League newcomers come up with the full payment.

"We have agreed to releasing Jon, but only on the proviso that the full transfer fee is paid" said Stoke promoter Dave Tattum.

"I think Jon will do well for the club and we wish him and Mildenhall well. But this is a business deal and we have to treat it as such."

Tattum added that Buzz Burrows and Rob Grant were still seeking team places.

Monday 2 January 2006

Stoke will have three riders – Paul Clews, Robbie Kessler and Michael Coles – in the New Year classic that goes ahead at Newport on Sunday, January 8 starting at 1pm.

Kessler won the initial staging of the event nearly a decade ago and is still one of the first riders promoter Tim Stone calls upon. “Robbie is a good pro and always tries his best on the track” said Stone.

“Stoke as a team have a good record at Newport which is why I have included three of their riders”.

Coles is hoping to make an impression in his first outing as a Stoke rider.

“I`ll give it 100 per cent because I want to be spot on when the season starts in March” he said.

“This will be a good test of where I am up to with machinery and fitness and to say that i`m keen is an understatement”.

29th December

Stoke have completed their top five by bringing Paul Clews back for a third year.

"He has the ability to improve on his starting average and that is what we need from him" said Potters promoter Dave Tattum.

Clews says he is delighted with the news.

"It certainly made for a better Christmas and now I can push on with my fitness and preparation programme" he said.

"I know that I need to do better next season and I will give it my best shot."

21st December

Stoke Potters have snapped up Michael Coles on loan from Exeter to leave just one place to fill in the Potters top five 2006 team building.

Coles spent last season at Newport, but some off-track personal problems resulted in him having a difficult season.

But the upshot is that his average dropped quite a bit and Potters promoter Dave Tattum feels the 30 year old will be a solid addition to the side.

“Michael comes in on just over five points and I really don`t see any better riders around on that sort of average” he enthused.

“I`m really pleased with this signing and feel that the team is shaping up very nicely”.

Coles said “I like Newport, but I found it a difficult home track whereas I really rate Stoke and I`m pleased this move has come off.

“I still feel I have plenty to offer and I`m looking forward to showing people that I`m a lot better than a five point rider.

“The things that were happening off track have all been sorted and I`m able to concentrate full time on racing again.

“This should be a very good move for me and I just want the season to start now.”

Stoke Potters 2006 team building plans moved a huge step forward over the weekend with the signing of highly talented and experienced Australian, Mark Lemon (writes Neil Evans).

With the knowledge that neither Paul Pickering or Jan Staechmann were going to be available for next season, Potters promoter Dave Tattum has been on the lookout for a consistent top scorer and says he has landed his first choice target:

“To be honest, I have had a number of riders getting in touch regarding next season” revealed Tattum.

“But Lemon is a rider who I have had in the back of my mind for a little while and I fully believe his inclusion in the side will give us a lot of strength both at home and on our travels.

“He rides Stoke very well and his home and away average over the past few seasons marks him down as a rider who can adapt to big or small tracks and still come up with the goods."

The 32 year old Australian, who comes in to the side on loan from Elite League Poole, rode for Somerset in 2003 and Exeter in the following two years and topped the averages on each occasion.

It is that sort of top end power and consistency that tempted Tattum to go for the rider who won Stoke`s prestigious individual meeting, 'The Pride of the Potteries', in 2003 and 2004 and whose partner is Emma Owen, daughter of former Stoke stalwart, Tom Owen:

“Coming to Stoke ticks just about all the right boxes for me and, despite a lot of interest from several other clubs, this was undoubtedly my first choice” he said.

“Living in the Southport area, this is my local track and is a relatively easy drive for me which is a huge plus after three years of driving to Somerset and then Exeter for home meetings.

“On top of that, there are opportunities to practice here in the week as well and that is another positive. I`ve missed out on that and testing bikes etc over the past few years and everything about coming here seems to fit”.

Tattum added that he was pleased with the three confirmed signings so far – Alan Mogridge and Robbie Kessler are also on board – and that he hoped to be in a position to announce a fourth fairly soon:

"I think we are shaping up nicely and I am talking to a number of other riders about being with us in 2006.

“I hope the supporters can see that we are building with strength and quality and remind them that 2006 season tickets are on sale”.

12th December

Robbie Kessler has been confirmed as the second definite starter for Stoke Potters in 2006.

"I think that Robbie showed a lot of strong qualities last season after two injury plagued years and looks capable of increasing his performances and average" said Dave Tattum.

"We want to take advantage of that improvement and I am delighted he has agreed to come back for a fourth successive season.

"Along with Alan Mogridge, that gives us a fair bit of quality and continuity in the team. I am working on other signings right now and I`d like to remind people that season tickets are on sale."

Adam Allott, who finished last season on the injured list during a brief spell on loan with Stoke Potters, has turned down a racing trip to Australia over the winter in the hope that his presence here might help him find a 2006 team berth.

“I have spent the past few winters in Australia and/or New Zealand and it really is a terrific experience” said the 22 year old from Buxton.

“I`ve decided to stop at home this winter, though, mainly because I want to be able to speak to promoters if anyone offers me a team place for 2006.

“My shoulder injury has cleared up now and I`ll work during the winter to put extra cash in to new machinery.

“I am keeping an open mind on next season. Kings Lynn own my contract and I may figure in their plans. But if I don`t, I will go anywhere almost and another spell at Stoke would suit me."

Stoke asset Neil Collins will ride on loan for Newport next season.

“Neil had a good season with Newport in 2005 and was keen to go back” said Stoke promoter Dave Tattum.

Stoke Potters season tickets are on sale and are priced at £230 for adults, £135 for senior citizens and £85 for children.

These prices are applicable before Christmas after which time they will increase.

Stoke will run a training school on Sunday, weather permitting, from 12-4pm.

7th December

Stoke have announced their first signing for the new season with the news that the popular Alan Mogridge will be back at Loomer Road next season.

The 2006 season will mark Mogridge`s fifth with Stoke, his 25th in the sport - and his swansong.

"I have decided that next season will be my last and it goes without saying I hope it is a good one" he said.

"Coming back to Stoke was an easy decision and I really think the club is moving forward. The introduction of the air fence is terrific news and I take my hat off to those who made it happen."

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum added: "We always wanted Moggo back because he is a class act. He has a good rapport with the supporters and riders and we are delighted he will be here to contribute to the team as he always does."

5th December

Luke Priest is on the verge of turning down a tour to America – in order to concentrate on making a breakthrough to Premier League racing in 2006.
“It`s very flattering and a tempting offer – but logic tells me that I can`t afford the time or the costs” said the 20 year old.

“It would be a terrific experience to go and to ride on some of the small tracks they have over in the States.
“But I had set my mind on working through the winter and putting the money towards new equipment for the 2006 season."

A benefit evening for Paul Pickering last Thursday raised £3743 with more to come.
“It was a terrific gesture and I`d like to thank everyone who came” said organiser Bob Rylands.
“We do have a Manchester United top signed by Rio Ferdinand which we will put as open to offers on the internet."

2nd December

Rob Grant has asked for a move and his request has been granted.
“Rob feels it is in his best interests to make a fresh start next season and has asked us to circulate his name as being available” said Dave Tattum.
“I can understand where Rob is coming from because he had a tough 2005 season and we will do all we can to get him fixed up somewhere else”.

Grant, who feels he took undue criticism for the Spitfires defeat to Armadale in the Conference Trophy final said: “A lot of things went against me last season and I just think it would be best for everyone if I took a bit of time out and tried my luck somewhere else”.

“I would like to stay in the Premier League, though I do not know what grade I would fall in to yet.
“I certainly haven`t finished with racing and I hope to be back with Stoke in the future. But, for now, I think a move away is the best thing”.

30th November

Stoke are set to break new ground when they become the first Premier League track to install an air fence next season.

Cyril Chell of main team sponsors Easy Rider took the proposal to Stoke promoter Dave Tattum and the outcome is that a safety fence has been identified and will be installed over the next couple of months.

"It will definitely be in place for the 2006 season and maybe as early as January which will give us time to look at the way it functions and to tweak whatever is necessary" said Chell.
"There will have to be work carried out on the track itself, the fence posts and pits gate etc. But that is something that we can get on with as soon as the fence has arrived."

Chell had had the idea mulling around in his head for some time but it was the serious injuries to Paul Pickering and Jan Staechmann that prompted him to push on with the idea and the proposal has now been ratified by the BSPA.
Stoke promoter Dave Tattum said "We are really grateful to the forethought of Cyril Chell and this will really put Stoke in the spotlight and can only help in our ambitions to bring the top meetings to Loomer Road.

"It will also quash for the good the silly rumours about Stoke closing. We are moving forward and this is quite a coup for this club."

From a riders' perspective, Jan Staechmann added "I think this is a terrific move by the club and I take my hat off to those involved.
"Air fences have been used in the Grand Prix series and the Elite League for some time. But rider safety goes across the board and this great news.

"Stoke is far from being a dangerous track, but anything that aids rider safety has to be a plus."

28th November
Paul Pickering is hoping to have some good news to relay to supporters when he attends a benefit evening at Bradwell WMC, Bradwell Lane in Newcastle Under Lyme on Thursday December 1 following a visit to the specialists who operated on his injured arm recently.

"I am going over to Sheffield today and I am hopeful of hearing some positive news" said Pickering who has been out since March 16 when he crashed at Hull.

"I do feel as though the last operation was a success. It was very lengthy, about eight hours, because all the muscles, bones and nerves were mangled and they had to separate everything and re-route the nerves.

"Much of the day to day pain has gone now and I am hoping to hear that we are on the right road at long last.

"But, whatever the news, I will be able to let people know face to face on Thursday."

Admission to the event organised by Bob Rylands is free and there will be an auction of goods.

25th November

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum returned from the British Speedway Promoters Association AGM in Tenerife in positive mode and has already started planning for the future.

"There was a lot of good to come out of the AGM and I feel sure that the Premier League will be as competitive as ever" he said.

Premier League clubs will have to assemble their top five riders within a 33 point (without bonus points) framework with two graded British riders at reserve.

The major change in the league format is that the top eight clubs will now contest a play off system – theoretically enabling a team other than that which finishes top of the table being crowned champions.

"It`s heartbreaking if you do top the table and then lose – but it is a massive incentive for every team to get in to the top eight."

Stoke will also contest the Premier Trophy competition and have drawn Somerset in the first round of the KO Cup.

22nd November

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum is attending the British Speedway Promoters Association AGM in Tenerife this week.
Tattum says that his first concerns lie with others rather than his own team planning. “One or two clubs have encountered difficulties and it is up to all of us to help and support all we can” he said. “There has been tremendous unity in the Premier League for many years now and I really do hope that we can retain the strength and variety of the past.
“Of course, I will be putting our own views across and I will be thinking of the best way forward in putting a team together. But I really do want to see the Premier League remain stable and we have to recognise that some issues need addressing”.
