Wendy Timmis (Nee Smith) Newcastle ******** Drama Message to Abigail How old are you? You are probably best to either concentrate on getting your A-Levels or equivalent, either at school ar a local FE college. I'm not sure about Burntwood but in this area you can study performing arts subjects at 6th form, S-O-T College and Newcastle College. When you are 18 you can look at your options and decided between uni or drama school. There are lots to chose from but you have to watch funding, the fees at drama schools can be very high. Good alternatives are places like Bretton Hall in Leeds and Manchester Met's acting course. I'm sure there are more. I think the best thing you can do is go to college and take a drama or performing arts a-level because drama schools don't tend to accept under 18's uless they are private. Private schools will cost you arounf £10 000 a year and each course is 3 years long. When you finish college, you can apply through UCAS for drama school or university. most drama schools look at people aged 21 or over, but they do accept 18 year olds. Get as much experience as you can beforehand as you will be expected to have a broad range of skills. Also, drama schools can be harsh in their auditions and selections, but don't let that put you off. I didn't get in last year so I'm re-applying again this year. Don't give up! Hope that helps. They are flung into prison camps deep in the jungles of Sumatra where they struggle to stay alive despite starvation, disease and the cruelty of their captors. Fifty years later, a film-maker draws Bridie and Sheila together for the first time since the end of the war. We are producing a show at the Queens Theatre in November, see press for details near to the time. Once again Thank You Diane Jones ******** performing arts charley should be careful saying that Jill Clewes is the only place where singing dancing and acting is taken seriously. There are a lot of other award winning centres and groups within Stoke/Newcastle who take all aspects of performance seriously. This is the second time recently where correspondents on this site have said there own groups are the best. I am sure that whilst the people running these groups would say that whilst they strive to be the best they would not actually say they were the best. I also think they would be very upset to think that there hard-won reputations were being damaged by these unthinking advocates of the groups. carol beardsall[not afraid to sign name] stoke on trent ******** in reply to A Performer I think you have totally mis understood what I was refering to, regarding professional theatres. Let me explain, I think that the Regent's hire costs are far to steep -, I would like to see them reduce their hire costs, so that the theatre is accessable to all groups. As for the Queens, I do not live in Burslem and altough I look on their web site I would like to see more advertising around. , It is not a small theatre as you put it, and therefore could be our city's second professional venue, their should be a sign outside adveritising it as a theatre. Yes I have seen banners, but it would be nice if it was promoted as much as the regent. I think you should realise that the theatre does not pay for costumes props etc, unless it is a in-house production, so Im sure that the theatre - and this goes for any theatre - promotes themselves the best they can so that more groups book their venue's and keep these theatres open. theatre goer ******** Burslem Festival I would just like to say that this years Burslem Festival was brill. We are looking for people aged 8 - 25 to come along. Keith Ragdale Stoke on Trent ******** Our theatres Dear 'THEATRE GOER' The queens theatre re-opened in time to produce a christmas pantomime in 2003 and help host a summer school for younger people. Since then another pantomime was staged the following christmas and i hope another will be staged this christmas also. I have no inside information and yet i know all about it. The 'advertising' consisted of banners on the actual theatre itself and adverts in the sentinel as well as im sure a few posters in burslem itself. If you want to know about theatre productions in this area it is upto you to find out about them. The queens theatre is an extremely small theatre which is unable to charge the prices the grander regent thatre can, and so anymore advertising than what was employed would have, i'm sure, virtually broken the bank. I wonder that you are so against theatres making a decent profit to cover costs when you express such a desire for advertising. If our theatres lowered their prices as much you would like them to there would be even less money for advertising. Im sure anyone with experience in the performing arts industry will agree that expenses such as buying rights, costumes, buying materials for set and then making the set as well as the hundreds of other costs hindering our theatres and performance groups soon mount up. So if you wish to know what is happening in our theatres get off your bum and find out rather than spending your time criticising and complaining about or struggling performers and performance venues. The sets, the costumes, the singing, dancing and acting was truly first rate. I saw it on the Friday night, when Charlotte Morris was Annie and she was utterly convincing in the role, with a super voice. Andrew Cox Andrew Cox Hanley ******** Annie - Regent theatre March 2005 We were knocked out by the production and thought that Sarah Mould playing Miss Hannigan was fantastic. Also Charlotte Morris (she and Charlotte O'Rourke shared the role) was outstanding as Annie. She has an amazing voice for her age and seems a really natural actress. We are sure that we will see her again in other productions in the future. Well done to both Charlottes and everyone involved in a truly fantastic show! I love it and nobody should dis it!!!!! Geo Trentham ******** local theatres I think that the Regent theatre should reduce their hiring costs. It would be nice to see smaller groups and Dance schools on there, if they reduced their hire charge they would in the end make more money, its a shame that small groups are limited to the Mitchell or the Rep, there is nothing wrong with these theatre's but they do not have the professional look of the regent. I hear the Queens Theatre is re open, but where is the advertising??. The new owner looks like they need to buck their ideas up and start promoting the theatre, get more big shows there, I know they had Jim Davidson but it needs more. This theare could be the second professional theatre in Stoke on Trent, available to all those dance schools and groups, who have out grown the Mitch and Rep but can not afford the Regent, and are not prepared to rob people by charging rehearsal fees etc, and extra meetings just so they can pay the theatre bill. Aj stoke on trent ******** Stafford & District Operatic Society It’s over eighty years since some budding Thespian came up with the idea of forming an operatic society here in Stafford and it’s thanks to an enthusiastic group of local folk that we celebrated eighty years of making music for the County in 2004. Following a meeting at The Sheridan Hotel, twenty aspiring performers voted to form an Amateur Operatic Society. The annual subscription was fixed at five shillings (25p) and “The Mikado” was chosen as the first production in 1924. We’ve performed it four further times since then - a popular choice and it is our Spring show 2005. The Oddfellows Hall is our main base for rehearsals today but earlier memories are of the old hall in Tipping Street with members gathered cosily around a coke stove during Winter rehearsals. Apparently male members of the Society took it in turns to stoke the stove, a chore they gladly washed their hands of later on ! All but two of our shows have been presented at The Gatehouse Theatre. The exceptions were “Patience” in 1979 and “Kismet” the following year, which were staged at Walton High School while the Borough Hall underwent extensive refurbishment. Since then we have been able to put on two shows a year. We were especially privileged in 2004 to stage our first world premiere "Mind Your Manor!", written and musically directed by Ken Wragg. Pre-audition 'Charleston' Workshop at The Harriet Higgins Centre, Newcastle under Lyme on 5th December 2004. Auditions to be held at St. John's Ambulance HQ, Cobridge on 12th December 2004. The Society are particularly looking for lead boys and girls in their late teens/ early twenties (although any ages welcome to attend) able to dance and sing. Lack of experience is no bar, as the cast will be choroegraphed and coached during rehearsals. Come and have some great fun! Jon Bott Stoke on Trent ******** In reply to Jo - Nights out Jo asked for advice on nights out for her local theatre group - why not vist fellow companies's productions at the Mitchell Theatre and The Rep as well as the many others performing the length and breadth of Staffordshire - If you went to see everthing that's on in the area you wouldn't have enough days in the week -such is the talent in this area. Musicals, Plays Panto's Evrything you could wish for and remember the more productions you see the more tips you pick up and if there's a production you like and think that your own comapny could do it it's one to put on the back burner for a few years.
