************************************ Last archived April 2006 Tim AKA Bob Crackin show Mary. Had a brilliant nite at the Wheel on Easter Sunday. Back on the scene after a biiig gap. Looking to organise an event in East Staffs sometime (to put just a little bit back for all the crazy times we've had) Steve, Maz, and Derek. Hi Mary, PLEASE, PLEASE give our N/S, MOTOWN night in OXFORD a BIG PLUG on your show this Friday as it's the first time ever in OXFORD so we are told. SATURDAY 6TH. Janie Boise USA Hi Mary and Nick, Still listening to your great show every week. I have a few picks to request: Standing on solid ground by Sidney Barnes. I still love you by The Superlatives. I can't help loving you by Paul Anka. They'll never know why by Freddie Chavez. Game Players by Dooley Silverspoon. Quick change artis by The Soul Twins. Your wish is my command by The Inspirations. That's loving you by Percy Wiggins and This time I'm loving you by Venecia Wilson. If you could play one from the list that would be great. KTF Janie Pedro Hi Mary, When Nick played Fortune Teller last week it made me think of all of the other soul songs that were copied by British bands of the early 60’s. One of these songs is Leaving Here by Eddie Holland. Please play this if you can, to prove that you can rarely better the original. Thanks. Tim and Valda To John (Bren) Yes I remember the cassette recorders at Wigan! What a laugh that was and then trying to convince your mates that the quality was top. Mary, any chance of some Isleys? Respect to the Norwich Motown nights. Oh and for our mates Sean and Michaela over there, any chance of Moonlight Music and You? It's sung by a woman and it starts "I've been deciding it's over without you" ... "wasting my life when I don't really need you" and the chorus goes something like "Out of my mind to get into my heart again" ... "knowing its true". I hope to have the piccies up on my website www.soulman1949.com sometime Monday 3rd April. Keep on keepin on, Alan. Dave Thorley I`m astonished that my views that were factual and supported by a lot of people I know on the scene are deened unprintable.Yes they were controversial, but our music has always been more important than any personality.I wish to apologise to everyone whose e-mails were not published last week as a result of my comments, it certainly was not my intention and I feel embarrassed. Now I understand the censorship in place of any criticism of the current format I`ll keep my views for discussion at northern venues only. Niel in DC (The Spindoc) Mary: Another great show, with so many great tunes that are new to me! (And, of course, what press secretary wouldn't be pleased to get a little publicity for himself once in a while - positive publicity, that is!) I would like to alert all soulies to a contemporary singer, Frank Mendenhall, who does quite effective southern soul. Happily for everybody, his entire albums are available for a listen over the internet at his record company's site. Google "SMD", "Wurst Act Records", "Frank Mendenhall" and "Hard Times". That should take you to a site with his second album. Look for the little link that says, "Listen Now" and you'll quickly hear why I like this guy. Make a point of listening to "Time". Keep dancin', y'all! Ian (papa G) Mary,There's a great 3cd box set "Out on the floor N S floorshakers" available at ASDA for £5.97. Goldie(alias Bert Smith) Steve from Warrington Soul experiences come in many shapes & sizes:you can keep the faith in a variety of ways.Your more than doing your bit with your wonderful show & open minded attitude.People are rightly passionate about their soul, but the worlds a troubled enough place without turning something we love into an acrimonious debating society. What ever was said in that message you deleted, don't let it shake your confidence.I'm sure there are lot,s of folk who listen to the show that have heard lots of tracks, that I don't suppose they would ever have come across(thanks Nick).Keep on keeping on & warmest wishes from our household. To those who missed it, make sure you get there next year for THE soul weekender to end all. KTF Alan the soulman1949 Alan from Manchester Hi Mary, It's 5pm and I've just had a phone call from Joe and Sylvia Dean, who have arrived safely from Exeter for the Twisted Wheel allnighter tonight. Looking forward to meeting them, Deb from Wolves (hope she found the address of the Wheel ok) and, of course, Goldie for what promises to be a cracking night. KTF. Al the Soulman1949! Kate Hi Mary Discovered your show a few weeks ago and listen to it on the internet. Bit late this week as its Thursday - have usually listened to it several times before now. I live in Sheffield and there is very little soul about this side of the Pennines. I'm so envious of the scene over there. Have just heard you mention a monthly soul night at Barnsley Trades club but I missed when the next one is! Can you help? Many thanks Brian Just one thing to say mary (or maybe 2) 1. big improvement in the show since it first started. 2. Rihanna - SOS (rescue me) is another one of the changed cover things. It's actually tainted love and she even sings part of the original lyrics, Have a listen and you'll recognise it straight away. Doesn't sound too bad neither. KTF Bill Wright Great show - fantastic to listen to the memories from up here on the Isle of Skye (and some new-to-me tracks too). Sound quality is much better now. Can you please play Johnnie Taylor - Zig Zag Lightning for all those who remember Mr M's at the Casino. Also for my family who put up with my sounds and much-censored memories. I consider myself very lucky to have had such great times and great friends. Thanks Mary - you bring it all back. Andy, Cheltenham 'Hurts So Good'. Must be a rocksteady first for the show. Not that I'm complaining. More please. Ethiopians? Prince Buster? Skatalites? Blue beat/Ska etc. went hand-in-hand with soul then, so why not (occasionally) carry on a mod tradition? Drew Colby Drew Colby Sunday 26,March 2006 23:57 GMT, Dear Mary Fox ,Please PLAY The Hustle by Van McCoy from 1975. Thank you. Niel in DC (The Spindoc) To Steve Baddeley Green: Glad to hear that Wilmer & the Duke's "Give Me One More Chance" is known to you. It's no wonder that you got it via a Buffalo station since the issuing label is located there, and it was a northern New York band. Vinyl's nice when you can get it, but just so everybody will know, it was reissued in 1999 on CD by Forevermore Records. Definitely a floor filler, I'll send it on to Mary so everybody can test it for themselves. Thanks for your note! And thanks to the entire Northern Soul scene for making so much good American music available to Americans (and others)who might otherwise have forgotten about it! ayupmeduck Great to hear Theresa Lindsay's "Daddio", I'm glad somebody else played the "b" side of "I'll Bet you" Kay Lowe (Jersey) Hi Mary, Still listening every week via Listen Again,I know the knees are'nt too good but my hearing!! just read on the site it's not just me with problems, then hey prsto !! back to a good volume, I don't have to sit, virtually on top of the computer desk anymore , hope your voice throat is feeling better Love Kay xx steve baddeley green s- o-t To Neil in DC(THE SPINDOC ) wilmur and the dukes as reached our shores got it on WKBW BUFFALO also mp3 cracking tune from 1968 and a rare piece of vinyl and it is alive and kicking here in stoke on trent good tune one worth sending in to mary . Ray and lydia Yo Deb and Jen,Go for it at the Wheel on the 31st March, we will be thinkin about you. Remember to ask for Marvin and Tammi track off "United" Album or you could always go for Jens old favourite "Some day were gonna love again" Barbara lewis (maybe Mary will play it on Friday 24th, please Mary). See you when we get back love and kisses Ray and lyd Mick Crowe Hi Mary I always enjoy your show on the internet, its always a toss up between listening to you or Andy Kershaw, another Soul lover, on the Playback! Any chance of playing O.V.Wrights 'Ill Take Care Of You', a brilliant Southern Soul track. Keep up the good work. Mick Twiggy To Nick Marshall, I got offered Sweet Thing and Sunny by Marvin Gaye way back in the 70's, Marvins version will take alot of beating but George did a great cover which beats the original in my opinion, i just think the way Marvins and Georgies version are produced different and both very similar to each others, I got offered Marvins version way back in the early days but it did nothing then for me and the record dealer said i'd be sorry, he was right and if memory is right i think £1.50 or £2.50 what a steal but can't remember seeing it ANYWHERE else, now got it on MARVINS Box set which you know is going up in value and some nice stuff on it most released on other compilations, what do you know about Marvins Sweet Thing. Goldie, Flip Robert Johns RAIN DROPS LOVE and SUNSHINE over and have a listen to WHEN THE PARTY IS OVER great tune and wait till you hear IF YOU DON'T WANT MY LOVE by him this will zoooooooom in value that I'm sure and only a few dollars, get on e-bay quick whats a few dollars but if not its on a few compilations so worth a look. My Four Leaf Clover is now available on vinyl around £6 quid, this is one of those you put away and pull out when needed, class produced monster, made recently for todays New Soul Scene, can't wait to hear some of Georgies and Donnies covers, sorry I didn't go Kings Hall I was making a point by not going £15 quid is getting a bit pricey by the time you have paid out on taxis and Booze its a dear night for 2. Will go the next one thats a for sure. steve baddeley green To Tony in Stafford the Arthur Prysock Track All i need is you tonight is on a album by Arthur Prysock called Could it be magic` i think ` but if you cant locate it send your details to mary and i will email it to you `. cheers Steve Baddeley Green` Soul -on -Trent Deb (Wolves) Hi Sylvia, As I have never been to Manchester before!!!! can you tell me what street The Wheel is in, so that I can get the directions off the internet. Thanking You KTF. Andy, Cheltenham I wonder if any devotees of your show ever found themselves in my neck of the woods in the mid to late 60s, climbed the long staircase past Burtons, past the snooker hall to the 'Blue Moon'. The only place in town where 'our' music could be heard - i.e. 'In The Midnight Hour'. Magnificent! Mary, this time, let's hear it for the Moon. Paul the 'MP3' expert Mary, I decided to put a couple of your old shows I have on the computor on an 'IPOD'? to take with on a trip tp Portugal. I had to get my daughter to set up the IPOD and tape a couple of shows. I managed to erase them before I had a chance to listen to them. A sol less week. Could yoy play Gene Chandler and Barbara Acklin, Teacer to Preacher. ps. They have a good Northern Soul night at barnsley Trades vclub once a month. Paul ex-expert Nick Marshall Twiggy - the Spinners did the original version of "Sweet thing", a year before Georgie Fame. His version was on an LP called "Sweet things", which was all Soul/R&B covers, including a few other Motown tunes. Many of his early singles were also cover versions ("Yeh yeh", "Sunny", "Sitting in the park", "Do-re-mi") - he could always pick a good song. Most of his best stuff, including "Sweet thing", is on a CD called "20 Beat Classics" (terrible title - great CD) which you can easily order from the internet. Tony (Wolverhampton) Mary, Your show gets better every week. Great to hear Craig mention Willenhall Baths and Walsall Town Hall. These two venues were run by Walsall council in the mid-late seventies along with Darlaston 'Darlo' Town Hall. You could get Northen Soul on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights for 35p. The venues were aimed at under 18's and ran from 7.00 to 9.30 pm. DJ's were Dave Dallas (made up name?) and Neil Mitchell. This is where many of us first heard the music before moving onto Wigan, Birmingham Locarno, Stafford Top of The World etc. Great sounds, great memories. Keep it up. steve hi mary great show as ever thanks for mentioning the soul night at the westbury tavern clayton;was a huge success a good time had by all,any chance you could play dean barlow third window from the right,a real classic thanks steve of clayton ezza great show yet again mary ,just like to mention the westbury taverns northern and motown night it was brilliant the atmosphere was fantastic and the dj neil played a great mix of tracks. ps could please play me the girl across the street by moses smith for my mate steve cawley thanks mary keep the faith ezza great show yet again mary ,just like to mention the westbury taverns northern and motown night it was brilliant the atmosphere was fantastic and the dj neil played a great mix of tracks. ps could please play me the girl across the street by moses smith for my mate steve cawley thanks mary keep the faith Ivan-Nottingham Hi What was the track that was played after the 8 0'clock news on last fridays show? It's like a secret, only us old soulies know about it. I don't know who produced the Sugar Babes but I guess Ian Lavine or Pete Waterman may have had something to do with it as they used to be NS DJ's. Keep the faith! Last week I was in the states on holiday and caught it in the hotel and tonight I can listen live while typing some work on my laptop. All this technology is great but although I have a lot of Nothern soul tracks on CD,there is one I have not heard for ages which I have on vinyl. Its 'I GOT THE FEVER ' by CREATION. Could you play it on your show. Best wishes Jim Niel in DC (Spindoc) I'm wondering if anybody else is familiar with "Give Me One More Chance" by Wilmer and the Dukes. I suspect it was too obscure to reach Britain but it was a minor regional hit in '68. I have it both from CD and also as played on WPGC in Washington, complete with the DJ intro and outro, and Mary, I've been meaning to send you copies on the assumption that you lack it. Niel in DC (Spindoc) "You know it's spring because..."? It's not what you're looking for, but back in '67 on Dean Martin's variety TV show (filmed in Los Angeles) he said, "You know it's spring because the smog is turning green." Anyhow, it's St. Patrick's Day, which leads me to ask, "What's green and sits by the pool?" Answer: Paddy O'Furniture. And his sister Erin Go'Braghless. And now, back to the show! sylvia dean Hello to Debs ( Wolves), Alan, and Goldie... Really looking forward to the 31st at the Wheel, and meeting up with you guys, your enthusiasum for Northern Soul is SO evident in the write ups on this site!! Thankyou Alan for the info on Salford Museum exhibit, we intend to go there on the Fri afternoon. take care everyone, Keep the faith anne always a great show, but why on the internet has the sound gone to low. Deb (Wolves) To Carol from Derbyshire, I have also noticed this opening rif on the Sugar Babes 'Red Dress'. You know what I always say, Long live Soul music and Keep the Faith! Pedro Mary, March 10th show was fantastic - Too Late, Seven Days Too Long, and you played Key to my Happiness! Thanks! phil mod merthyr so much good stuff on last weeks show best one yet. please will you play 'jenette' by wade flamings, for all the mods and mods at heart. thanks phill mod merthyr. Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I went up to stoke for the Allnighter on 4 March it was a first for me at the King's Hall but not a last. The music and the venue was SUPERB. There was quite a few of us from Wolves and it was nice to see. Waiting now with bated breath for Twisted Wheel on 31st. could you play my fav at the moment Love Factory - Eloise Laws. Thanking you KTF. Alan from Manchester As has been mentioned, the Twisted Wheels' Allnighter is on Friday 31st March, looking forward to seeing those attending. Also, as Goldie has mentioned the Sink in Liverpool are doing a Special on April 15th back at their original premises at the Magnet - I've never been there before, so will be attending this historic venue. Anyone else up for it? Alan from Manchester Salford Museum and Art Gallery are holding an exhibition entitled "Dancin' All Nite", from 10 March till 25 May, celebrating the Manchester Northern Soul scene. When this was shown at the Wigan Pier heritage centre, it had more visitors than all the other exhibitions for the rest of the year. This is now moving to Salford and will have a local feel to it, with the experiences of Salford people - I've bene involved with some behind the scenes support. There will be lots of photos and memorabilia - for example, Pete Roberts from the Twisted Wheel is loaning his Lambretta and the original Wheel sign. This strikes me as a great place to visit for those coming up for the Wheel Allnighter at the end of the month. For more information, contact the website at http://www.salford.gov.uk/viewevent.htm?id=1138 - if you're interested let me know via my website at www.soulman1949.com. Niel Wright Oh please, Mary! Not the "Sheer-odds" - it's the "Shu-rayds".... Just teasing! - Niel Wright, Press Secretary Office of Congressman Tom Petri Ivan-Nottingham To the listener who enquired about Deena Johnson-I'm a sad girl. You can find it on the cd 'Trippin' On Northern Soul' Goldmine GSCD91 Paul From Shaw Great show Mary but still having problems with the sound quaity on listen again like last week. Goldie Homer Banks Three most Popular Tracks..".Sixty Minutes Of Your Love.",."Hooked By Love" ...& ..the well covered "..A Lot Of Love" He Co-wrote "Who`s Making Love " for the talented Johnie Taylor.. But My Favourite Piece of Music by Homer Banks is:"THE UPTIGHT MEDLEY"..in this he shows his Quality as a musician ...plus he shows his dedication to Wilson Picket..This track A must for all Soul D.J`s young & old a brill sound to glide along the floor to ....MARY FOX`S FRIDAY NIGHT SOUL SHOW ...SO IMPORTANT FOR CARRYING THE MESSAGE & K>T>F...SHARING OUR SOULS WELL DONE MARY & I AGREE WITH THE LISTENER NEW WEB PHOTO EXCELLENT C.U.soon.........goldie Twiggy To Nick Marshall, which version of Sweet Thing was done first, Marvins or George's they both seem to have been arranged very similar and I just wonder who copied who, great version by Georgie Fame, George was always a Blue Eyed Soul Boy checking up on his stuff he covered, I can't believe i'm hearing his stuff only now, I think thats because of his poppy stuff its a bit like comparing Robert John another talented Blue Eyed Soul Boy but was classical trained, I just wonder what other rabbits these artists will pull out of their hats. Talking of Robert John he surposed to have some other underground Monster Tunes apart from Raindrops Love and Sunshine, When The Party Is Over and If You Don't Want My Love, Do you know anymore Tracks by him Soul based. Niel in DC (Spindoc) Oh, what the English do with the English language! Mary referred to the group The Charades as the "Shehr-odds". As an American group, one would be more likely to pronounce it the "Shur-ayds". On that question of the lyrics to the mystery song, I don't know if anybody else has noted that George Strait (not soul, I know) has a song with rather similar lyrics: "It's four AM and you're just getting in. Your first night out- I won't ask where you've been." That's from "I've Seen That Look On Me (A Thousand Times)" from the album "SOMETHING SPECIAL". Could it be a cover version? sylvia Dean Message from Herbie from Cambridge... How do you manage to download??? would love to know have tried?? Ktf Pat from Stoke Hi Mary. Your new photo is lovely! KTF Deb & Jen Andy, Cheltenham Hi Mary Haven't been giving your show the usual attention it so justly deserves - reduntancy meant I could (temperarily) no longer plug myself into my Mac and groove whilst I worked. Freelancing now (gizajob!) and well and truly plugged back in pestering you to play Willie Mitchell's 'Soul Serenade'... Carol from Derbyshire Am I the only one who can here the opening rif to Landslide in the Sugar Babes 'Red Dress'? Steve, Maz and Derek. Hi Mary, This is the third time we have got in touch with you concerning a regular Northern Soul/Motown night that we are trying to start in OXFORD.(we are NOT doing this for any monetary gain but purely for the love of the music.) We know it's outside BBC Radio Stoke's broadcasting area, but we know that your programme is listened to by many in the Oxford area via the internet. Would it be possible to broadcast this appeal and ask your listeners to """ GET IN TOUCH """ via our dedicated email; (THE BBC cannot post email addresses on its messageboards) "We know you are out there" as we have had over 200 "hits" at dailyinfo.co.uk leisure forum and also gave you a glowing report at BBC Radio Oxford messageboard. But we need to know if the support is really there. It would be tragic to miss this opportunity to spread the faith and listen to Northern Soul in Oxford. Many, many thanks Mary, keep up the good work and hope this is "third time lucky" to enlist your help. In your debt. Steve, Maz, and Derek. P.S. please play "Laws of Love" by The Volcanos for Maz as it's his all time favorite. Once again thanks, Steve, Maz, and Del. sidonie Hi Mary, thanks for playing "Don't pity me" for me last Friday. Love, Alan martin from manchester Hi Mary Just a thought but wouldn't A touch of velvet a sting of brass make the ideal ring tone. I have the San Remo Strings, I'm satisfied on my phone but I am tempted to down load the mood mosaic people. I know trivia is small talk by another name but the backing vocals for this track are from the ladybirds who were stalwarts on the British music scene in the sixties and seventies.Margaret Stredder was the one with the glasses. The three ladies were formerly the Vernon Girls. I also know many people were impressed with Goldie on your show so why not bring him back and promote his appearance as the soul fan that really does know... its whats in the groove that counts. What a star! Can that man talk?. We can all spout 1000's of words, but that man can TALK! If he produces his memoirs, put me down for a copy. For someone like me who just loves the music, can't dance, never been anywhere of not and never had a vinyl that made people gasp it was brilliant to feel the enthusiasm of the man, backed up by a knowledge to die for. I hope certain warring factions were listening to get a feel of what our music should be about. His favourite record summed him up. He loves it and we can all be dammed. Thanx Goldie, you were top. Well done mate. Mary, you were brilliant as well chuck. I'll always remeber that as one of my favourite radio moments ever. Hey Goldie Rain Drops Love and Sunshine in a record shop in Hanley, was it the original or pressing, flip it over if you bought it and give the A side a play, its hard trying to keep up with releases on Cd bloody hundreds of compilations and the Japanese Cd's have some crackers on them. johny murf It seems only a few fans are using your site to comment to each other.Whats with a bit of praise for stoke radio for keeping our faith in northern soul.I AM SHORTLY OPENING A NEW VENUE ON A MONTHLY BASIS .and I would lie you to come on the opening night If only for a few mins.Or you could do your show from it for the following week.Stictly underground by invitation only.Contact thro this site only .LET ME KNOW .By reply all proceeds wil be given to a charity of your choice. ayupmeduck I don't know Mary, last weeks playlist was one big cock-up, I know you do it to drive me crazy. Interesting to hear what Goldie had to say, while he was running across Slab Square, on August 31 in 68, to The Beachcomber, records in hand, I was posing in the Beachcomber on Skegness sea front, with what must have been the last big gathering of Mods in the Sixties. Lots of the Long Eaton lads were there and Ilkeston, Nottingham, Retford, truly a wonderful gathering of scooters.(we made the tv news I was told when I got back) Goldie, if you bought those records in Notts I'll bet you got them from downstairs at Rediffusion, where they knew their stuff and had all the latest imports and I bet you listened for hours in those "booths" before buying. It all started for me in the youth club in Long Eaton, then Coronation Club, Kimberley, Ilkeston Co-op, Bali Hai, downstairs in the Palais, Notts. I did get turned away from the Beachcomber once because I wasn't a member and no one would sign me in. Got in a few times but by that time it was the Ad-lib (at least I think it was). By 71 the record shop to got to was Selectadisc on Arkwright Street but it was still several years before the mass discovery of forgotten records. I've got those records you played, probably bought them at the same time as you, who knows, maybe the same place. What version of Competition ain't nothing did you play, I'm sure mine is different. By the way was the Stu Morris you mentioned a big well built guy who stood out in a crowd because he didn't have a hair on his body. I never went to the Wheel, the closest I got was listening to the tales told by a workmate of the time, Bernie Button, it was always hard to listen as Bernie had taken a substance to get him through the weekend, but it sounded like a great place to be. tarameducks Francis Great show with Goldie last week. What a guy! Is enthusiasm was awesome. I remember people talking about him during the Torch days, they would always say what an amazing dancer he was. A real showstopper. Unfortunately I never got to meet him. But after his slot last week feel like I know him well. Brilliant. KTF Mary it is marvellous what you show has done for the northern scene.Bringing people together from all over the place. May be it would be a good place to ask about people we all used to know in the Torch/Wigan days and see what they are all up to now. Particulary the Wolverhapmpton crew that always danced at the front of the casino dancefloor, Jethro, Kim, Jacko etc Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I went to The Queen's Hall all nighter last Saturday 19.11.05. and we had a great time. It was good to talk to other people about your show and I can report that everyone knows who Mary Fox is and they all listen to you show on a Friday evening. Could I please ask you to play one of your great records for Kev and his friend who made us feel very welcome(I believe he does text the show regularly, otherwise known as Love God!!) and for Tony and Alex a lovely couple who I hope we will meet again at other venues in the future. Thanking you KTF. Deb (Wolves) Hi Sylvia Dean, it was so nice of you to get in touch. I have a friend who has Joss Stone's 'Mind,Body and Soul CD, So I asked her to burn off a copy for me. Keep on trucking and listening some Monster Tunes will be played in the Future, Cajun Hearts I got to find away to find you, I hope Nick Marshsll will bring Williams and Watsons Monster I'm The One onto Marys show, Mary might play Magic Potion Lou Johnson (Instrumental) I prefer, and maybe Body Talk by the HITMAN himself Eddie Kendricks for Malcom. Keith Beardmore To Mick at Meir Heath Sorry about the delay, I have had no internet connection, bloody computer virus has ment a total reformat of everything.I`ll leave my e-mail with Mary/Steve..Thanks Alan from Manchester Dick from PortValeWay - thanks for alerting me to the Offshore special day, I'm out of the areaa but will record the output from t'internet. Couldn't agree with you more about the part the offshore stations played in promoting black music. From 1964-66 Caroline North was very much THE station for soul, under the helm of head DJ, Tom Lodge. From 66 onwards, as you say, the South ship with Rosko, DLT and JW, just ROCKED the airwaves - wasn't Johnnie president of Uptight and Outtasight, the Atlantic Stax Appreciation Society? Sylvia, I look forward to seeing you at the Wheel in the New Year, the place is something very very special and one of the venues I look forward to most in the soul calendar. Let me know nearer the time - you can check dates (usually last Friday of the month) at their site www.twistedwheel.net (I'm the Alan in the photo gallery for October). Going to 3 soul dos this weekend, including a freebie Wheel special on Sunday afternoon - woohoo, the weekend is not far away! graham anderson (oldham) just a quick line to ask if you could possibly play the jackie wilson & erma franklin version of i get the sweetest feeling. This is a superb version of the alltime classic you played last friday, good show keep it up girl ian nicol (from Telford) hi mary, having just returned from Soul In The Sun in Tenerife, i was told 4 days into my holiday that everything that was played was on CD , i never noticed any difference in quality apart from the vast amount of varied music that was played plenty of everything soul FANTASTIC, A big shout out to all the lovely people we met in Tenerife from the Stoke area Bryan, cath, gary, jane, john, brenda, dave and janet keep up the great show Deb ( Wolves) Hi Mary, Missed last Friday's show as was at the NIA in Brum watching The Temptations and the Four Tops, their guest was Chris Clarke and we had a great time. I really missed the show so could I please request Hawaii 5 O, which seems to be quite popular with the listeners at the moment. Thanking you Alan from Manchester Goldie - The Twisted Wheel is in the same premises it occupied on Whitworth Street. Dick- PortValeWay I've heard that Radio Stoke are doing an '1960's Offshore Radio' day on Friday, with memories of Radio Caroline etc. I hope you continue the theme on to your show Mary as soul fans owe so much to the offshore stations. When I first heard Caroline in the school playground in 1964 it was as is someone had put the light on. At last we were able to listen to music throughout the day , and not for just a few minutes of Bernard Hermann and The Northern Dance Orchestra playing Beatle songs on the Light Programme. It was because or the offshore stations that we first heard of soul music, and djs such as Johnny Walker and Emporer Rosko were foremost in playing soul. I remember Johnny Walker one night playing nothing except records on the Atlantic label, saying he couldn't be bothered to keep to the playlist , and Rosko singing 'Rosko' For The FBI, over the chorus of 'I Spy For The FBI'. I never found out it was called 'I Spy..' until I bought it. Hope you play ' A Touch Of Velvet', DLT's signature tune played every day, 'Sock It To 'Em JB', and loads of Motown, Atlantic and Stax records that we would never have known existed if the offshore stations hadn't have played them. Niel Wright Mary, On almost every program you have either several good tunes that I've never heard before, or else one really, really great tune that fits into my dopamine system like a key in a lock. There was a lot to enjoy in your last show, but I knew within the first 20 seconds that Gladys Knight's "No One Can Love You More" was going to shoot to the top of my personal chart. Great voice, great drums, a hard, aggressive bass line. Just fabulous! Thank you soooo much! And thanks to the Northern Soul scene for keeping some of my country's best music alive and available! Since I found your show I've been a major new support for the British economy by my addict-like purchases from Kent Soul and other British labels. I can't believe how much great stuff I missed because I was listening to American Top 40 instead of the local Black station. - Niel in Washington, D.C. Sylvia Dean Hi Deb from Wolves, Yes I totally agree about "In The Morning" being a northern soul sound I e-mailed Mary quite a while back about The Coral and what I thought to be a Northern Soul Sound. What about Joss Stone? ( good Devon lass!!) and her CD track "Don`t cha wanna ride" on her Mind Body and Soul cd. This is soooo like a classic Barbara Aklin favourite " Am I the same girl" Check it out Debs, I think you will like it !! Keep the faith!! Soul Fan "To THE ANNONYMOUS soul fan, hey we all have opinions you have yours and i and others have theirs end of bloody story" - TWIGGY - my point did sort of back you up but hey don't know why I bothered you are obviously always right. kev & tricia from leek Hi Mary, great show, keeps me trucking down the road on a friday night, dancing in the cab !! pity not national loose u somewhere south of brum! not heard PLEASE OPERATER for a good while, please! also can you find out where people are getting those baggies from {trousers}, just on the scene again & been going some allnighters would love to get a pair of those baggies again. my wife got the loafers waiting for mine! my size not in!! any way KTF look forward to next show! Andy, Cheltenham Not a BIG Stevie Wonder fan. But this his latest shows what a master he still is. (A rare commodity). A brilliant tune. Tim Sorry Mary (and Norwich) it's Tlk of the East, not the Town. But what the hell would I know livin' in Northampton? Still want H-5-0 though. Tim & Valda Hi Mary, Couldn't listen on Friday so pickin' it up on Saturday. C'mon Mary time's right for some cd's of yours. The shows are great compilations of the best in Motown and Soul, so let us enjoy through any media and put out some 'Best Of' Mary Fox Soul Nights. You've been asked plenty of times, so when are you taking up the challenge? Whilst writing, send a big 'Keep The Faith' to the Talk of the Town faithful in Norwich. In particular, our mates Sean and Michaela, Millie and Nigel. Last plea for the theme tune Hawaii 5 0. Ta. Twiggy To Malc Potts, Hey Malc read some of your e-mails, you have had a go, trouble some people forget very easily. To THE ANNONYMOUS soul fan, hey we all have opinions you have yours and i and others have theirs end of bloody story, embarrasing, what the bloody hell are you on about, hey THE OLD SCHOOL fought for freedom of speech and of mankind get a life and A NAME or have you forgot yours, I bet your really a Beatles Fan have a bit of Banter whats up with you. Lynne Folks might want to check out the "Northern Soul" entry on www.wikipedia.org. It even has a reference to Mary Fox's show! Also, Martha Reeves (as in ... and the Vandellas) just got elected to the Detroit City Council. The newspaper Detroit Free Press said that she ran a "low budget" campaign. I'm sure she had 100% name recognition to Detroiters over the age of 40, and probably a lot of younger people recognized her name as well. Mary, could you please play "California Soul" (any version) for this former Detroiter now living in Los Angeles? Thanks! Sylvia Dean I am so pleased about all the very recent comments, and does this signal a move away from any negative debate on the curennt sdoul scene ? debate is only good if it does consider all sides but at the same time keeps to the subject in debate. Of course all debate is good, but I think we all agree that the Northern Soul scene is unique and very special. Goldie you really sound a real gem!!, your soundbites and blasts from the past are excellent.Joe and I would love to meet up with you. We will most definitely come up to the Wheel in the Spring, and hopefully meet up? An invite also to all who listen to Mary Foxs` great show. I think we are all in agreement that Marys show really has done SUCH a tremendous job in raising the profile of Northern Soul. Keep the faith!!! Andy, Cheltenham Hi Mary Why not do a regular Juke Box (soul) B side spot? You could invite requests. And for starters, how about the Isley Bros' 'There's No Love Left' or 'One too many Heartaches' or Spencer Davis' 'Trampolene'. By the way bring back Earl Van Dyke. Andy - Crewe Strings a go go / Double Cookin was also a 101 club single with vocal called Faith & Understanding by The Magicians (I Think) I'm sure Nick Marshall has played it but it was sometime ago. Deb ( Wolves) Hi Mary, I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I know what I like, I wonder if I can have some input from anyone out there about the song 'In The Morning' by Coral. It sounds like a Northern Soul sound to me.......what do you think? Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I have to agree with Malc Potts that the brother and sister you had on the show last week were great. They mentioned The Wolves Club on Saturday nights and The Laffayette Club, and when you played Truckin by Eddie Kendrix the memories came flooding back. I'd like to know who the Wolves DJ is that Kate mentioned who is still around (bless him), if it's the one I think it is he still plays the best music in the county! Thanking you, Deb Dave (in Canada) KELOWNA B.C. Hi Mary its me Dave in Canada. i know its a big country....but i though we were pals and you would just know it was me you know the bad speller from the summer, ive been hidding in the shadows but if you listen quite you might hear my distent shoe clicks to your midnight beat(ok 7 to 9) thanks for playing my song. Mary i need your help do you or any of your liseners know if a DVD from England would play on my DVD in Canada i would like to send for a copy of soul function can you help .... thanks Dave (from kelowna B.C. Canada) Twiggy To Ivan, There is a Compilation of Ric Tic's stuff its about 6 years ago it was realeased, I think only 500 copies of it and I'm kicking myself for not getting it. Hey Goldie, you ought of been there when I met Major Lance, what a show he put on. To the guy who liked Eddie Kendricks which was brought in by one of Mary's guests have a listen to Body Talk, its on a cheap cd from Discount Disc or available on Eddies THE HITMAN LP, I'm sure you'll like it. Nige Hi Foxy, Gr8 interview with Chris Clark. I cannot find where she is appearing can you let us know or where to find out. Cheers Hunny. ps how about playing somethings wrong by chris clark. Ivan With ref to Double Cookin' (AKA Strings-a-go=go) the vocal was called 'At the disco' by Russell Harness which is available on a goldmine Cd 'Black Magic Treats'. With regards to Ric-Tic for some reason there is very little material available on Cd with just the odd track appearing here and there. Perhaps you could have a word with your contact at Motown and see if you can get them to release a Ric Tic compilation as there are many great tracks (and instrumentals) that I would certainly like to have on Cd. ayupmeduck Hi Mary I hear other people are upset with your unplay list, but you only laugh and joke about it, believe me, a list of any sort is of no benifit to your listeners if it's not accurate. If the show goes out live how long would it take you to write down the tracks as you played them and then hand them over to your webmaster. You have the lists dating back to 2004 are they all wrong? If I had a northern soul show I could put every rare track known to man on my playlist and then not play them, is that how it works? tarameduck Bill Bailey Dear Mary, I have mailed you previously regarding the the Northern / Motown mx and have to say that the more I listen tothe show - invariably on T'internet over the week following your show, I really do enjoy it more, despite my NS bias which evolved from mowtown beginnings, as I suspect did many others. The purpose however of my call is ( apart from wishing you well with the show that is) is in relation to an impending trip to Australia with my wife, Diane. We are travelling out during early december for a few weeks and have already surfed for NS events in both Melbourne and Sydney ant I am looking for contacts and details of events in both Cities during December as we would love to mix some ex-pats or Oz soulies while we are there. As a Stokie, my history goes back to the Top Rank, Torch, Casino ( still have my membership card from 1973) plus a photo of the incomparable Edwin Starr in his dressing room there) plus the Catacoombs, Blackpool Mecca, Heavy Steam machine, Whitchurch Civic Centre etc ) and we would love to fit in a Northern soul night during our visit. Our other passion is VW Beetles so if anyone is into both, even better ! Please pass on my e-mail address to any one who enuires and say hi to frequent caller Trevore from Werrington and tell him to polish his shoes and take in the next soulg gig. Very best wishews for a truely unique and ace shoe ! Best wishes Bill Bailey Soul Fan Is it not acceptable for folks to have differing opinions and choice on the big wide world of Soul Music ? Frankly the constant bickering / opinions on and off air has become annoying and is sadly very indicative of the current scene. Twiggy Hey, come on a little bit of Banter never hurt anyone, The Northern and Soul Scene have played a massive part in our lives and You ALL must know how protective we all have become in protecting OUR SOUL SCENE, Ok I'll stick my hand up and say perhaps I shouldn't have said somethings but I think some of you just don't realise how petty some people can be when trying to get a spot to Dj at a Soul Nite and if you try and start one up then THEY work against you in the background. Lets hope now we can share each others knowledge. Somebody told me that the Soul Karokee Cds from America are The things to get, anybody got any and give opinion and those who are going ask about them. Bernard Mary as regards your listener asking about a vocal version of "Double Cooking" on "Ric Tic Relics" I am looking at my copy now and there is nothing like that on the album. Perhaps they are geting mixed up with Laura Lee's "To Win Your Heart" which is the vocal version of "Festival Time" by the San Remo Strings both of which are on the album. goldie twiggy I would have loved for you to have been with me when i first saw Spellbinders Live or when Gino Washington was ushered on to the stage by his Ram Jam Band or when Inez & Charlie first sang Tight trope Live.....When I first heard "Touch of Velvet for the first time played at a packed house at Whitworth Street it was one of the most beautiful "SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES" to happen to Me......Just cos they were FORTY years ago well 38 to be precise ,DOES not make them any more special than the ones your good self & other people are experiencing now !.....If your "SOUL MUSIC ".EXPERIENCE..is a JOYFUL one, thats the main thing .!!!....when it happened, or happens is purely circumstancial......God bless you Twiggy.......your passion ....for.......This wonderful heaven sent thing :soul ,music is OBVIOUS GOLDIE.......Liverpool kate (wolves)fela not lady mary ta for the chance to chat sorry the team that take in all your sounds each fri night wont be hear to listen because we all go to tenerife to the soul in the sun we fly out on the 11th of nov at11am so keep up with all the top tuneswill try to chat when we get over there and we will try a live chat at the soul celler on veronicas strip in tenerife if you check on the net soul in the sun tenerife the dj in charge is eddy edmonson the get together when we get back is at nantwich town hall mary ttfn by the way you missed the ship and rainbow and the wolves civic hall that used to be on monday nights and one of the top djs of all the the clubs around wolves and that was and he still is out and about we go to his gigs when he is onlove to come in if can get the chance lived it all and still living it thanks for keeping the faith K8 X Malc potts, Manchester Hi Chuck, Loved the floor fillers. Just a couple of quickies. Marlene and Jim, (Not Jimmy!!!) were the best guests you've had on since I've been listening, very funny & natural and great choices. Please ask Twiggy et al to stop the feud. I know they're dedicated soulies but it's getting embarrassing. However, if they decide to sort it out in the playground, I'll come & hold the coats. Loved Eddie Kendrix 'Truckin', hope your fully recovered and any chance of Just Ask Me by Lenis Guess. You choose if it's on vinyl or CD. It doesn't matter to me. Love to you, Nick and all the WWW listeners. susie jay Hi Mary, I used to go out Friday nights early, but now its usually later on because i have to listen to your show first! Gets me in the mood! Could you play a request sometime for myself? The Temptations 'Just my Imagination'. This brings back loads of memories for me. Thanks suz joe Having read all the comments i thought it was time that i put in my penny-worth.When somebody calls me a dinosaur i take umbridge with that person!. I have been a collector of soul new and old and took my entire collection with me to n.z. and brought it back.We helped to start a soul club in barnstaple where the taste was vast but we still liked to have the dance floor full. This was a way of expressing your enjoyment and enthusiasm for the music. We have already stated to you that out on the floor was a mixture of young and not so young all enjoying the music and atmosphere created by a full dance floor. When i get up to dance it is because of the music being played by the d.j.who has surveyed the crowd by playing a few records at the beginning of the gig.The job of the dj is to keep the dance floor moving, as to the vinyl vs cd i think that if you have the equipment to play both you should use it to play the best music for your set. KEEP THE FAITH. John Hi Mary! I want to burn all the songs on your show onto a CD... how do I do it? Thank you! John C. Twiggy Hey Goldie, the e-mail I last sent was to let some know that the Soul Scene locally as not been that well attended, we have had some of the BIGGEST NAMES in Soul Music trying to kick the nites in but still very poorly attended, Ok the Kings Hall Allnighter is always buzzing but thats about it, it always been the FAITHFUL FEW keeping the faith, I personally dunna travel to much because of travel sickness but been asked to go to America, sorry mate I love England to much, I am looking forward to seeing your pictures of ALL THE GANG who went to the Wheel, I had mates who went everywhere like yourself, thats where I got alot of knowledge of the Soul Scene, its really sad that people want to think they can relive their youth by requesting records that they heard 30 or more years ago to be honest IF the records that were played at these places were released now with knowing about other Soul releases most wouldn't get picked or spun before some of the great new sounds from the same artists, I personally think that some people have become very stale with their choices. For example they think its all about filling the dance floor, sorry mate most soul records will do that if they are the hundred mile an hour stuff or the beat ballards, heres one I heard on Tricky's show on Saturday and its called Hooked up on your love merry go round by the Isley Brothers, Tricky said thats whats its called and I'll tell you this its the best Isley Brother track I have heard by them, its a nice floater dancer, they think I canna fill a floor I'll have holes in their shoes before the nights out. The Soul Scene is all about banter some can give it but some just can't take it. watch out for that Isley Brother track its a Monster. Goldie Alan I am kept informed of current soul venues etc....I had a season ticket for the wheel 66-70.....Have not been since......I have not needed to........The wheel is very much lodged in mysoul for ever Though lately people have been pushing me in that direction......I have little opinion on this thing called soul...but I do have an rxperience & I like to share my experience which happened with other folk.....It is not simply "all our yesterdays"....no! no! it is the source &ircumstances as to why I have spent most of my life feeling this good ...The Wheel & all that happened at that time of my life had a wonderful everlasing effect on me .....Alan when you get a chance confirm current wheel address 4 me..........Sylvia I went to all day er in Leeds August Bank Holiday 67.........met Tim , Telford ....Just played "with this ring " Platters what a great old wheelie (like me ha ha )that is GOLDIE Howly - Cacuaco, Angola Mary, Lost web connection for 3 weeks.... nightmare. Back On Line now & listening to Floor Fillers....Fantastic... Heres another cracker... My Little Girl. Instrumental.. I Think Bob & Earl Band.. Please dedicate to Nige Akehurst & The Luanda Lambretta Squad.. Crazy as ever. Keep On Playing those fantastic memories bev Hi Just like to tell you about our northern soul and mowtown nites in Gloucester. The are fast catching on and even the young uns want to come. Still slipping and sliding doing the same dance we did when we were 15. Great stuff. Down in Torquay from the 5th November for one week, have you any mowtown do's on there. Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I'm off to the Red Lion Pub in Burslem on Saturday 5 Nov. Gonna check stoke out! Thanking you Deb Goldie Where have I been Twiggy dancing my socks off where else.....Chelsea Place next week Greenwich....Fort Laudedale Then I will come see the Staffs Scene AS "torby" "Tombo" & Edwin Once said no-one does the "Moon walk Back drop " like OUR GOLDIE........YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE UNIVERSE TWIGGY........& you are right the only time you can enjoy youself is now not yesterday nor to-morrow...ta Twigg......Sylvia Yes TOMBO great dancer........The salop soul select I have photos & memories ..Stay connected..Love Light & Soulful JOY....Goldie Alan from Manchester Goldie from Liverpool and Sylvia Dean - do either of you go to the Twisted Wheel currently? I do recognise you're a long way away, Sylvia. Although I am old enough (56 now) to have gone originally, I never did at the time as my folks wouldn't allow me. When I was older and could have gone, my friends were into other things, so I never went then either. But earlier this year I have started to go regularly, always a brilliant night, despite it being unbearably hot in summer!! It's very much my spiritual home musically - I had to learn a lot of the Northern Soul records when I got on the scene a couple of years ago, but when I went to the Wheel, I was blown away by the fact that I knew most of the records - shouldn't have come as a surprise because Radio Caroline North played all those wonderful tracks that were played at the Wheel. In case you're interested, they are having an allnighter on Friday 25 November from 10pm-7am(http://www.twistedwheel.net). If you guys are up for it, then it would be nice meeting you there. Also, Goldie, I'm going to the reopening of the new venue Sink in Liverpool on Saturday 20th November. Take care. Steve Amison Message for Keith Beardmore. Still the same tel number matey give me a call. Cheers Amo sylvia Dean Thankyou Goldie for your soundbites!! Talk about a blast from the past. Do you remember anyone from Shropshire, We were quite a big contingent from Shrewsbury and Wellington who used to make the weekly trek to the Wheel? There was Caddy, Windsor Cyril, Joe Paul,Mick Webb, Ronnie Hayes ( from Liverpool) Sam, Sylvia, Janet,Carol, Pedro,Matty,Dave, Joan, Roger France, Tom Mc. to name a few!! Yes! Mood Mosiac is possibly my own defining Wheel sound. I saw Edwin Starr the Steam Packet, Ike and Tina , Oscar Tony Jnr. I was very fortunate to have met Edwin Starr when he came to our own local Theatre in Barnstaple, about two years before he died. We talked about the wheel. He remembered the two twin sisters that danced so well? Do you remember them ? There was also a guy called Tombo I think from Stoke, who was just an amazing dancer. He was quite a chunky guy and wore kid mohair suits and everyone loved to watch him dance. Ther thats my blast from the past, it was such a special time and to relive it all again is just amazing. There are some wonderful gigs around, and long may iot last. Twiggy Hey Brian thats twice you have had a go, I don't think you and Silvia know to much about the Soul Scene, I have said that you and Silvia are the Types who say you have done this and done that, you keep on about hammered sounds,The Soul Scene is VAST and not for just a few Anoraks that like to stay stuck in TIME, your like bloody Dinasours, dunna give me this do gooder lecture about Soul Music and hey where have you been for 30 years The Soul Scene is alive and Kicking around Stoke-on-Trent or let me put you right SOUL-ON-TRENT and THE BEST IS YET TO COME, I want a Soul Scene for todays people not yesterdays people and we have some cracking collections of Soul Music to pick from, you can't expect people to keep paying taxs to come into a club to hear the same repeats and this bullshit about filling a dance floor, I thought you get people to turn up first get them in the mood and then the dance floor, Hey and Silvia let Joe have a say, you say that having a go at someone is not good for the Scene, hey check the e-mails and it was you who had a go at me first, so I hope the cellotape is used noe and lets end this. Deb (Wolves) Just got back from Berlin, in time to listen to your "Floor Fillers" show. It was great, more of the same to follow I hope. To Steve Amison Amo old mate I am up for the vinyl on Ipod/MP3,but need advice,my seventeen year old son is into downloading but when I mentioned vinyl to him, he asked was it something people put on kitchen walls in the 1960`s.I still have your home telephone number assuming you are still at Ash Bank/Werrington, what about my coming over and buying you a pint while you advise me. Cheers Keith Sylvia Dean Alan from Manchester, your comments on the DJ debate are spot on !! All the good soul gigs we have been to of late ARE good because the DJ keeps people on the dancefloor, and the minute this stops the atmosphere goes. A good record comes on and people are up and the mood lifts, the good dancers come on maybe first and it gives confidence to everyone else to get up.At Exeter Soul Club there is a huge mix of ages. The 40`s-50`s and groups of people from all over the South West. But also the Exeter Uni kids and they love it, They dance and dance with us, asking who the record/artist is, some have never heard Northern soul before, this is the way to promote it, and to quote Dobie Gray.. Out on the Floor!! sylvia dean I debated whether to reply to the person Twiggys last comments, you really are a sad case Twiggy !!Lighten up man. Yes I did go to the Wheel unlike yourself by your own admission. Is this where the chip comes from? may be the reason for your ageist comment!!! I am very happy with the current northern soul scene, and all the more enriched since Joe and I have started to attend more and more really good soul nights. Good debate is also enriching but sad when people get nasty and personal. Life is too short for all that. Anyway that is the last I will say on all this nonsense. Back to the music hey Mary!! Keep the Faith !! Brian Taylor Alan from Manchester`s views are spot on.I am sure the majority of punters attending venues go to enjoy dancing and are tolerant of hearing some " newies"todays "newies" are tomorrows classics, except for perhaps Twiggy who does not care if the dance floor is empty. Dave (in Canada) Hi Mary. Hope your feeling better. Nick did a great job for you, I finaly got round to lissening to to show what with work and all that, It most likly is to late to be of much help but you never know There was a fan looking for the Ventures Hawaii Five O, Well i have it The 45 is on the united artist lable silver spotlight series? It is also on a CD Walk-Dont Run The Best of, Again i think im to late but some one was looking for the words to Because of you by Jackie Wilson, because im late in getting this out I wont write them out but i will tell you where to find it its on the CD Jackie Wilson The Soul Years 1966-1975. The wife got it for me one year for Christmas ( thats love) some one was loking for some video of the bandwagon NO i dont have that but would love to see it Whats the latest on the Movie? Looking forward to Fridays show. Do you send signed photos over seas? It would look great in my music room???If you can let me know and i will send my address...... thanks Dave can you play Jackie Wilson yor love keeps lifting me higher and higher (its my number one) thanks.. mike meir heath hope you are well if you could play a lot of love by homer banks please cheers Alan from Manchester Just couldn't resist chipping in on the DJ debate. I've been to events where the DJ seems to be playing records for him/herself - they're up there behind their decks bopping away, problem is NO-ONE ELSE is out on the dancefloor!! I have a very clear view of the DJ's job, it's to get people on the dancefloor. You have to tempt people on. There is nothing wrong in sneaking in the odd track that the audience might not know - that's the way most of us learn - but to play obscure stuff for the majority of the set in a mainstream northern room is just not on. If they want to do that, then I suggest they stay at home and enjoy their audience of one! Alan from Manchester Hi guys, don't know whether anyone went to the Motown Legends weekender held at Great Yarmouth just over a week ago. Apart from Richie Pitts and the Invitations, we were treated to live performances from Kim Weston, Frances Nero and Brenda Holloway. Kim did an awesome blistering set, Frances was a sheer doll, stunned by the loving reception from the audience and Brenda was incredible - I'd waited 41 years to see her and wasn't disappointed. All the artists made themselves available for piccies and autographs and were more than happy to mingle with the punters. I spent a good bit of time over the weekend with Brenda (and her lovely manager, Saundra) and Frances and felt I'd made some great friends, they were so gracious. I'm just about picking myself off the ceiling, a weekend to remember all my life. Thanks ladies. Now Mary, you just have to get Kim's newly released Motown Anthology double CD, the album is worth getting for one track alone - CD1 track 16 is the one to play - "You can do it", a Smokey Robinson/Ivy Jo Hunter composition cut in November/December 1965. How this track has lain undiscovered in Motown's vaults for 40 years beggars belief, take my word for it, it's going to be a MONSTER on the circuit. It's been on my CD player on autorepeat for hours! Classic tight, crisp backing from the Funk Brothers, great call and response backing chorus, Kim just swings through the track, this is Motown at its very best! Awesome stuff! Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I am an avid listener now, great show last week. I have to agree with Mike Meir Heath and his choice of floor filler YOU GET YOUR KICKS by Mitch Ryder, guaranteed to get folks movin'. Twiggy Hey Silvia, behave yourself will you,can you prove you went the wheel, its just some thing you said on Mary's show that didn't sound right, I didn't go I was to young and just missed out on the Torch BUT HAD THE BLOODY VINYL. there wasn't a record the Chessy and Bradwell lads didn't have in the YOUTH CLUBS. thes clubs HAVE GONE get in the future, let the music move a bit from the hammered stuff. it might suprise you what other stuff those artistes did - this isn't about me knocking Mace why you have had to throw your two penieth in I dunna know- give your jaws a break now and take your teeth out! Carol Hutton (Derbyshire) Mary, can you play a sound for my brother who lives in Macau (China) and listens to your show regularly. His name is James McDougall although when he was young he was known as Jimmy or 'Dougall' (the dog in the Magic Roundabout). Anyway the sound that reminds me of him(and no doubt many young ladies of that era) is Jimmy Mac. Great show always a gem or two every week! STEVE / WREXHAM NOT MANY SOUL NIGHTS IN WREXHAM COULD YOU GIVE ME SOME MORE VENUES Reverend Jonathan Hagger ( Newcastle Upon Tyne ) Karen: Re. JJ Jackson's "But It's Alright". I've got it on the comp. cd "Soul Cargo Volume One" on BAR Records ( CD BAR 110 ). Available from Salvatore at Toto Records in Belgium but dirt cheap ( $11.00 ) if you by it from Dusty Groove in the States. The rest of the album is marvellous. Twiggy Hey Nick, Thanks for playing Raindrops Love and Sunshine by Robert John, flip the A side on next time because it will be my time to taste some sweet wine, I know you ave the floater by Robert If You Don't Want My Love, how about that for a future show. Rev. Jonathan Hagger ( Newcastle Upon Tyne ) I collect soul cds from all over the world by digging in the net and buying direct from indie labels and retailers, especially in the States and Europe. I have as much fun doing this as I did hunting down rare vinyl in the junk shops of the South back in the 70s and 80s. I discover tracks I've never heard before and I've made many friends in all sorts of places. My cd collection is now massive. But I also have a few hundred vinyl singles that I collected when there was no such thing as cds. I would say about 10% of these singles are originals, about 20% are re-releases and the rest are, more than likely, bootlegs. So tell me: if I was a dj could I only play the originals ( U.S.A. first pressings ) or can I play re-releases ( I have certainly seen djs playing tracks off vinyl compilation albums ), or could I even play bootlegs. If I could play re-releases and bootlegs then there is obviously nothing inherently more "real" about any particular medium that the music comes on. Therefore, a dj should be allowed to play anything he, or she, likes to get the dancers dancing because the medium is not the message, the music is. Another point is this: if the dj is behind a brick wall, and none of the dancers can see the decks, philosophically, does the vinyl record actually exist or does vinyl only exist when it is seen by somebody? Ian from Rotherham Good and bad news for the Soul Police. Unfortunatley the footage of top Of The pops featuring Wigans Chosen Few has been wiped The good news for the flying squad is that Wigans Ovations performance from 20th march 1975 still exists(Here we go with the blue lights flashing down to the bbc archive) Charlie in Phoenix Hi Mary, Having just mentioned the Showmen's "It Will Stand" in an earlier post is there any chance of getting this beach music R&B classic onto the playlist? If you can, I'd like to dedicate it to my family back in Ellesmere Port, Neil & Barb and Jan & Frankie plus all the kids. Cheers, Charlie Charlie in Phoenix This is in response to Stacey's question about Northern dancing compared to the "Shag". The two styles of dancing are quite different, Northern is far more aggressive, typically involving lots of spins and backdrops. Also, there is no partner unlike shagging (the dance that is). About the only thing in common is the shuffle (and some of the same sounds!). I'm a big beach music fan having travelled to North Myrtle Beach several times. Stacey, if you want to see some old style Northern dancing, get a copy of the "Soul Function" DVD from the UK (it's region 0 encoded so check your DVD player can play these DVDs). If anyone is interested in the beach music scene, the movie "Shag" sort of revolves around it. The movie is a bit lame ("chick flick") but has a great soundtrack (including the Showmen's brilliant "It Will Stand") and Phoebe Cates! Sylvia Dean Marys show just keeps getting better and better. Nick Marshall is an excellent stand in isnt he? Sorry Mace, my last long message was in reply to the person TWIGGY!!! I think you get my drift after reading all the comments. On a positive note and to get off all this unneccessary negativity and argee bargee!!! Someone mentioned a Touch of Velvet a sting of Brass, being the closing number at the wheel, yes I seem to remember that. I can remember going out into the cold Manchester air!! It was another world when you were in the Wheel !! Mood Mosiac Is one of my favourites. On another note,Is anyone out there going on the KRL Soul trip to New York In April next year?? I think there are around 700 northern soul fans going from the uk, isnt that testament that the scene is very much alive. I am sooo looking forward to it. I shall certainly be dancing all-night and hopefully every night, Keeping the Faith . It is such a good scene and great to a revival which Mary Fox has certainly contributed to. SprowstonBird (Tracy) Hi Mary, I have just found out about your show on BBC Radio Stoke from Paul / Norwich it's great. You bring back so many good memories. I'm already looking forward to next Friday. thanks for the memories Tracy X Paul / Norwich Your show is the best thing since crustless bread, and before anyone says it we can get in Norwich.... You just amaze me with the rare tracks you keep playing, what can I say more than to the perfection you have with the show, listening too it now at 11pm. Keep the Faith Paul X X X Sylvia Dean I Have just read Brian Taylor`s comments, which are spot on !! Keep the Faith Sylvia Dean Well well,Mace, have we got a chip on our shoulder or what!!! It beggers belief that you feel a DJ at a northern soul gig should not listen to his audience. I REPEAT........... at Exeter Soul Club, North Devon Soul Club, and when we come up to the Midlands to visit (our Northern soul friends) at the very excellent Shrewsbury Soul Club, without exception the night has YOUNG and OLD there and the music is vinyl northern soul. NO-ONE objects ( actually Mace everyone is DANCING and enjoys their night!! they know WHY they are there!! The whole point is keeping people interested in northern soul You can listen to any music all day, every day on MP3,Cd Vinyl radio, or any medium now. Can I say, Joe and I will travel across England for a good gig, as proved we came up to Marys show at our own expense and purely to keep the faith, we are not rich and in fact it cost us money to travel up to Stoke, but we just did it because we love the northern soul scene as we see it now, and also as we remember it, but also want to promote it to the next generation. You can water down anything... but there has to those who really appreciate Northern soul as it was at The Twisted Wheel, Torch, Wigan Casino,Night Owl etc etc and KEEP THE FAITH. We all have access to downloading music and I am sure we all do it. My son has downloaded LoTS for us ! thats not the point........... Maybe you are not a good DJ mate and the chip on your shoulder affects your judgement. I repeat be a DJ by all means but if y you want to do is play your musi, stick to weddings and funerals. You are welcome at our local gigs, just let us know !! we can let you know times/dates!!! Sylvia Dean DC Sandie Shaw? Northen Soul? I don't think so! Go fetch the Soul Police. Nige Hi Foxy, hows things, is there any chance of playing a track of your choice for Ray Pearce (OLD Snake Hips). who was 53 last saturday the 15th of october. as he danced the night away at the kings hall allnighter as he can still cut a rug as thay say, Cheers. Twiggy To Steve Amison, I agree with you one hundred percent, about new technology and I also agree that youngsters should be let into ALL Soul Nites with parental guideness, alot of Soul Nites are for the over 25's why I dunna know. To Mace - hey you got yourself caught up in something you dunna understand, I've filled that many pubs up to the rafters and queing hundreds of yards to get in, someone stopped them and thats who I trying to suss out. now't against you and I think your doing a good job, this very large pub asked me to do some tapes and what came back was the takings have gone through the roof. I suppose I was major competion to the promotors of Soul Music so ... I;m bit outspoken and they dunna like that but freedom of speech is the issue here. you play alot of Northern stuff - my argument is, if I have one, is this, Soul Music as moved in different areas. some old Soul Stars have gone to Hip Hop, Charlie Wilson out of the Gap Band is aperfect example; some have moved to jazz; Atlantic Jazz some have gone more to gospel based stuff. now in these areas theres some nice stuff mixed with some nice Northern stuff is what I'm about. But you try and get some played - now thats a different animal, I know theres someone out there trying to stop this music coming through. I might have got it wrong in thinking its promotors of Soul Music ... that was until the other night when they told me to play ball ... politics of music! Chris SOUL ON TRENT EVERY THURSDAY at The Bell and Bear, Shelton Stoke A new night of Northern Soul, Motown, Funk and Ska every Thursday. Keeping the torch of Northern Soul Music burning in Stoke on Trent Cheap drinks, a great relaxed atmosphere and Free Entry The venue is now under new management and welcomes Students and non students alike. Support Soul Music! Bell & Bear Snow Hill Stoke on Trent Staffordshire ST1 4LU Contact: skasteppa@yahoo.co.uk Tel: 01782 287972 Stacey McKenzie I just found your program on the internet, and am listening from Kentucky, USA. I LOVE your show. I would love to see a clip of "Soul dancing" to see how it compares to the "Shag" (Yes, I reckon that means something else in the UK). But in the American South, the Shag is a dance done to soul music - and the official dance of South Carolina. I am so happy to find your program. Thanks! Stacey Mace Twiggy - Kings Hall ain't the only venue in Stoke worth booking, Queens Theatre Burslem is proof of that, so why not try somewhere else? Sounds to me like you are very bitter about past incidents. Your comments don't get to me at all Twiggy, as I said, actions speak louder than words so just go book a venue, put your money where your mouth is and prove me wrong. regards, Mace. susie jay Well i have only just discovered your programme after searching the internet for news of NS venues etc. Although i live in Manchester, i think your show is fantastic - keep up the good work! I would love you to play a request for me please for Martin in Dubai who hails from your part of the world. Please play Dusty Springfield - 'All i see is you'. Thanks suz Andrew Mann Hi, Just been listening to a favourite of mine - Always Something There To Remind Me by Sandie Shaw - and it struck me that it would have been a top Nothern Soul track. Was it ever played in the clubs/considered a NS track? If not, somebody should really push it. Great Bacharach song, changes of pace, fantastic arangement. HUGE danceability factor! Regards, Andrew. Theresa Mary, could you please play 'Times are wastin' Fuller Bros for my friend Jack Broadbent. He lives in Manchester but listens to your show every week on the internet. We met up at a wedding recently in Newquay, havnt seen each other for ages and I just want to say it was great to see you Jack, Thanx Mary Karen Hi Mary, a record I used to love at the brilliant Penny Farthing Club, Hanley was, called 'It's Alright', by JJ Jackson. I had a copy but it was nicked at party in 1970,that shows how old I am!! I've tried everywhere to replace it, have you any idea if it's available anywhere on CD? Heavy Soul Hiya Mary, just wanted to say how much I enjoy the show, lots and lots. Could you do us a favour and plug Out on the Floor in the Black Dog, Weymouth, on the 28th October? Free entry, cheap drinks, 7-11pm. Not a big place, but if there's any soul fans in the sticks that night, come on down!! Cheers Tom Twiggy To Silvia Dean, I aren't interested one bit in filling a Dance Floor, I try to dance but I would be more interested in hearing a SOUND I LIKE on the Soul Scene, to be honest its either obscure stuff or the Battered stuff, Your comments on trying to be a Dj, just try it yourself and watch them act against you, its all about competion with some Djs and Mary as my FULL SUPPORT that she already knows, Hey lets have the real deal when it comes to playing soul records, only recently I was asked to bring some records to a Soul Nite only to be told RAINDROPS LOVE AND SUNSHINE and YOU BETTER KEEP HER are not suitable for this 70's Soul Nite one was 1971 and the other was 1974 if my memory is right and then I was told to PLAY BALL, I said Idon't lick anybodys .rse thank you very much, you dunna know the half of it on just how clicky the whole scene is, I hope I haven't upset you and I bet Maces Christmas card is already in the post. To Brian Taylor Why do you think that Soul Music should only be played in Clubs, me I fed up with paying to much tax on a door to here repeats let new Dj's with different ideas through it will amaze you when you hear stuff off RARE CD's and I have more vinyl than cd's so lets put that one to bed and still buying vinyl. Steve Amison I have to laugh when I see the comments on CD v Vinyl. This last few months I've bought an MP3 player & proceeded to put around 500 of my favourite northern tracks on it. My 15 year old daughter thinks I'm sad but who cares, I'm all for embracing new technology to hear my favourite northern sounds, even though some of these tracks were written around 1963! Who cares as long as we enjoy the music most of us were introduced to when we were teenagers, which for me is 30 plus years ago. Keep The Faith Amo Sylvia Dean Hey Twiggy, You really need to lighten up!! i think you really are not listening to people. Your comment about "not interested in filling a dancefloor" well, fine , so don`t be a dj then!!! or at least pick a venue where there is an alternate area. ( Shrewsbury Soul have tried this) But I tell you what Twiggy, everyone was in the dance area, young and old, ( I class myself here!!!) listening and dancing to the vinyl !! As it happens Joe and I have a HUGE vinyl collection but equally have around 50 CDs` of Northern soul alone, and yes I have discovered tunes I really like!!! To be brutal you ARE missing the point really, just enjoy the music mate and chill out and first and foremost SUPPORT people like Mary Fox who do SO much to keep Northern Soul in the public domain!!! Tim and Valda Going mad...any chance of Hawaii 5 O, it used to be played in Stoke in the seventies go on Mary make us happy ! (Again) Tim and Valda Another great nite tonite. Tony (Wolverhampton) Mary, Is there any chance that you could use your BBC connections to find out whether the footage of Wigan's Chosen Few on Top Of The Pops still exists. This is undoubtedly the best example of Northern Soul dancers on film, despite the track (Footsee) being on the Soul Police's 10 most wanted. I havn't seen it since it was originally shown. KTF & Up the Wolves. Best show on the radio bar none. angie worrall i stumbled across your show whilst searching internet radion stations, its the best thing i have heard for an age!! im now an avid listener, thanks, angie in Northumberland. GOLDIE Hi Mary...Wow Mary any relation to your namesakes ...TIGHTROPE so massive Inez & Charlie Fox , thanks for playing Billy Stewar above 2 big in the old Wheel Gigantic in Whitworth street along with Back Street Edwin Star Who Who Jackie Wilson ......Hooked By Love H.Banks Huge in the Cats Wolverhampton Early Days.......Mr Jacksons "I`ll never forget you ! stole the limelight in 1970 ..The Foxx Duo dominated The Wheel though making a dozen apearances 1966=69 in one appearance the elusive Spellbinders doubled up ..week after Alvin Cash did his famous Backdrop I heard "Touch Of Velvet Sting Of Brass for the first time .....Inez, Charlie & Mary what a trio of soulful foxes..c u on the 18th mary..Goldie Pat + Alan Carter Hallo Mary Can you send our love and best wishes to Ian Nightingale(guest on your show last year) as he is getting married tomorrow 15th October.Ian and his bride Mary have already started their newlife in Devon but have come back to Wolverhampton for their wedding. Know it's corny but please play "With this ring". p.s.Ian is hoping to be at Alsager tonight!! Brian Taylor Twiggy has been on the scene to long and is going senile. The comment " I am not interested in filling a dance floor" is pathetic, we all want young and old to enjoy all aspects of soul music played, but if it does not fill the dancefloor then it will not encourage people to attend the venue.I also started at the Torch and am still mad keen collector on all aspects of soul music, so do not try your comment of "I know more than you" that you belittled Mace with. All of us should enjoy the current revival, cut out the petty bickering of vinyl v cd, and show respect to each others views. Andy - Crewe Nigel Up The Junction - Crewe never went in it's "day" as a soul venue but went in the late 70's early 80's, even had ny 21st there in 1980. the building is still there and has been a snooker venue for a few years now. The set up of the building hasn't changed much and holds many good memories. Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I wonder if you could recommend a venue in Stoke as I feel everthing is happening up there and there is not a lot happening where I cum from. Thanking you. lol oliver hi mary, loved the show again!! remember i mentioned the all-niter in middlesbrough a few weeks back thanxs for the plug could you do a big big favour and tell all there is a virtual tour on their website @ http://www.theempire.co.uk/ and can you play something really soulful for karen bridges aka soulgirl from poole she's really hot on soul find her web page and invite her onto the show pleeeeeease even if it's just a 'phone call-in and thank her again for the help she has already given me it was the lady who found the empire website and e-mailed me it also she is running it on her boards. keep on keeping on xxxlol graham anderson (oldham) vinyl v cd. As an avid soul fan & dj of 40+ years i find it unbelievable that this is causing such a furore. Have modern day dj's forgot their primary job "TO FILL THE DANCEFLOOR" not play the latest capture to each other ,if i have a track on cd that i havent got on vinyl i have no hesitation in playing it. At the end of the day if you are dancing your socks off in the middle of the floor and the sound is right do you give a flying monkey whether its a £1000 original or a good quality cd ? Also if you have paid for a cd the chances are that the original artist has finally got some overdue royalties for their efforts not someone who happens to have a rare track in their possesion and is making a good profit without a thought for the singer. Come on soul fans embrace our music in whatever format we can aquire it DON'T KEEP THE FAITH SPREAD IT. Thats it i can climb off my box now and would like to ask mary if she could play the following tracks for me i'll never forget you by the o'jays this for me is such a great dance track also if possible benny troy i wanna give you tomorrow the strings on this are just awesome just like the san remo strings , two sounds from yesterdays & todays northern scene thta are just pure SOUL enjoyement Twiggy To Mace, just for your record I tried to book THE KINGS HALL in Stoke to REVIVE THE ORIGINAL SOUL NITE back in the 70's only for you know who to jump in before I could get the RIVIVAL NITE GOING, it seems inside information beat me, I hope that puts to rest that one about booking a room, book DJ's I have forgot more than most who have JUMPED on the Bandwagon so hopefully I have answered that one too, hey you Dj's don't like competion and yes its clicky, friendly Scene mainly I agree, Soul Music is great but other Dj's have better playlists or tastes its as simple as that, I have been on the Soul nearly 40 years not 2 minutes so I think I know a bit more than you about this music, I'm not interested in filling a dance floor, i'm more interested in young and old people been given the chance to hear a different side of Soul Music, soming I said must have got to you, I just wonder was it the word clicky, I still love the vinyl but I have moved on towards cd's but if its not on a cd then vinyl will be spun, the issue is not which is the best or came first, its about recordings you haven't got or another as so it can be played IF REQUESTED end of story. TheSoulgirl Joe... it doesn't matter how you dance - just enjoy it :D Phil Mod and Gingie The tune you metioned on your show is called 'Cashing In' by The Voices of East Harlem and early 70's tune, was commonly termed a 'crossover' tune, which a few years ago had a big revival on the mod scene. How about a mod related soul special? Hope this helps, Keep the Faith, Phil Mod - Merthyr :-) neil&barb Hi.Mary Great show,as always could you give a mention to my brother Charlie & Janice(partner) We,ve had some great holidays in the USA where he dwells and would love to hear Afternoon on the rhino MIKE POST COLLITION we would love to hear it agian as our kid has took it with him, love Neil & Barb xxx Dean Pugh Listened to the show travelling to Whitehaven from my home in South Wales last Friday.Brilliant, brought back some great memories. Listening on line right now. Mace To Twiggy. Shame you thought my comments to be 'twoddle'about comparing soul vinyl to the Mona Lisa. Both are forms of art that are appreciated by people with a passion for such. My passion is for the original vinyl, as it was the format / medium that was created to take that piece of art to those that appreciated it. Many artists are still alive and record on CD, but my passion is for the original 60s recording, and if that had originally been created on CDs then that is probably what I would crave....but it isn't.... The value of the vinyl has nowt to do with the quality of the tune...some of my 45s are expensive, others are not, and my DJ sets include both. My collection of vinyl consists of many genres, from Motown to Northern, R&B and Popcorn....their value to me is priceless either way, and really none of your business to be frank. The truth of the matter, is that when a tune becomes popular, the demand outweighs the supply, and thus the price rises....unfortunate, but that's the way it is. You also talk a lot about new/different sounds getting played - well when discovered they will be undoubtably played on the original vinyl as they would probably not have had a CD release, so should they be played or not???? I am also bewildered by your comments that the local soul nights are clicky??? In the sense that they are full of people who have a passion for soul music, then I suppose so, but these are decent friendly people who have a common passion, and with travellers repeatedly coming to Alsager Civic from all over the U.K. then I think I am right in presuming that the overall atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. I tend to believe that your 'clicky' comment is a reference to those that organise and DJ at these events? It is very easy to sit at a computer and pick fault with something...if you are not happy with the local soul events music policy or DJs then do what the rest of us have done - go out book a venue and DJs, advertise it, fill it, and keep those attending happy so they feel that they have had a great night out at the end of their working week, and will return next month. May sound easy on paper....there are plenty of unused venues around...so please give it a go. I will attend and give you a fair and honest review on the websites and forums.... Regards Mace. ayupmeduck I made this site long before mp3s, in real audio format. This one has instrumentals on it, some you've heard and maybe some you have'nt. http://members.fortunecity.com/soulstrutter/ Twiggy Hi Mary, Your last guest on your show Keith Williams got it spot on about what he thinks about Soul Music, Keith said he would prefer to find tunes that haven't been played on the Soul Scene but done by the soul Legends of yester year, I agree and it doesn't matter if its that swear word again vinyl or Cd, lets put that to rest because these artists need their other stuff to be heard, left to some we wouldn't have got Al Green back singing some great stuff AND NEW STUFF. Hey Mary play me Cindy Cindy by Shalamar some might say disco but to me Soul, Gerald Brown will knock um for six with his vocal range and where did he go after Shalamar, if any body out there knows let me know if he did any other stuff. Shar Hi Mary Could you plese pay a request for my friend Vanda in Biddulph, whose birthday is today Friday 7th, I wont disclose her age, but she's always been a soul fan, right back to Wigan days. Wish her a very happy birthday from me- please play I love you more today thay yesterday. Thanks bill smith just a general question to readers of the page, dya reckon cd's will ever attain the collectability of vinyl, never going to come close in price obviously and with the provision for copying people will always be able to get a copy off someone but at some stage as vinyl gets harder to obtain are cd's going to become collectable? Malc potts. Songs with clothes in the title. (you may notice that some are not strictly N.S.) 1. Simply the vest - Tina Turner 2. Where ever I lay my titfer - Marvin Gaye 3. Ain't no sole left in these old shoes - Major Lance 4 - Tights over Egypt - the Jones Girls 5 - It's a sandal - Dusty with the Petshop Boys 6 - Jump(er) - Van Halen 7 - In The Snood - Glen Miller 8 - It must be Glove - Labbi Siffre Happy 2nd Birthday to you Vixen, and a little mention for Nick, a beltin' little sub when you're gallavantin'. Mary, you asked how the weather was on Friday's show. I live in Manchester. Nuff said. Nigel Akehurst For Twiggy. Don't get me wrong on this, I'm not saying that there were not some good sounds in ther early 70's and as for the nuggets yet to be found they will always surface, a great place for that in the old days was Contempo records in Hanway Street in London, as recomended by Dave Goddin, went back the other day, sadly it's gone. Moving on now, clearly my friend Howly has little to do in Africa! Needs to get a proper job! Does anybody ever remember 'Up the Juction' in Crewe? Top venue!! Martin Thomson I DJ and co-promote a night in London called Solid Hit Soul. Next one is on Saturday October 8th, 9pm - 2am at Vivos, 17 Watling Street, EC4M 9BB. Entry 5 quid. Four resident DJs and a guest all playing original northern soul 45s in a fantastic venue. No dress code, no attitude, all welcome including first timers! Check our website http://www.solidhit.co.uk (playlists for one of our previous nights are up on the site to give you a flavour) or see my site http://www.northern-soul.com martin from manchester Tell me its just a rumour baby, but why do so many hard-to-find, and afford for that matter, records when isssued as cd compilation tracks sound not the full issue? You know, the satisfaction of finding a rare'un only to hear an even more rarer un, a verson that was not the vinyl isssue. It reminds me of the original compilation albums on KTel and Ronco records - the names are the same, the title is the same ,even the writing credits are the same - only the hearing is not the same issue. Whats it all about Mary? I am sure the record companies 'under licence' mean to make a commercial issue; its just frustrating to land that dream track only to hear a version beaten up by poor sound levels or worse. How about a guide to original versions? Each CD has as its track listing an acreditation to the authenticity of the track. It would be worth paying value for money prices for value not bargain bin fillers. Andy - Crewe Mary any chance of spinning Johnny Wyatt - This Thing Called Love or Major Lance - The Beat, heard them both recently for the first time in ages and forgot how good both tracks are. many thanks Twiggy Hi Mary, I was very amused at Maces comments on your show with all the twoddle he talked about comparing originals with the Monalisa; and saying its a tribute to the original artistes by playing their original recordings on Vinyl at Soul Nites. Firstly I will say hey Dj get a life: alot of The Orignal artistes were in there teens and didn't make a bean out of the orignal recordings; secondly they have progressed with their music UNLIKE SOME DJ's. I just wonder to myself if those ORIGINAL ARTISTES would choose to record on vinyl or cd in todays music market. I think Mace really ment to say this: "I paid the BIG MONEY for a tune and if you want to hear it played then it is only through going to a Soul Nite where I Dj, because Cd's aren't getting a look in,". I would like to say he is not the only one who has collected Soul Originals on 45 Vinyl, and some to me look too good condition to be originals, so I have originals ..I think ? and its Cd for me any day, move over and let some one show you how it should be done these little clicky Soul Nites bore me rigid. CLIVE RAYSON Hi Mary, Could you let you internet listeners on the South Coast and the Midlands know that Dean Parrish is on LIVE on Sat 5th Nov @ The King Alfred Ballroom Hove seafront8 till 1am and Sunday 6th Nov at Central Rock Montagu St Kettering for a Mini Dayer 5pm till Midnight more details and ticket info at www.soul-survivors.co.uk Could you please play Major Lance-Um Um Um Um Um Um. I was there in the early /mid seventies. Remember Tudor Rooms All Dayers, trips to St Ives, and Gt Yarmth clubs banging out 30 mins worth of joy ? Talk of the Town in Norwich is brilliant every quarter. Motown and Northern with emphasis on Motown Keep The Faith. Tim, Northampton. Tony from Wolverhampton Mary, Many thanks for playing "Can't seem to get you out of my mind" by the Four Tops a few weeks back. Unfortunatley I was on my hols in Greece so I missed it. Great music, not a single duff track each programme. Being a Motown freek from the 60S this is a great time to be around with all the fantastic reissues. The 4 Tops will always be my favorites following a one off concert at Brian Epsteins theatre in London 13 Nov 66 -- did the place rock (sadly only two Tops now still with us) and it would be good if you could spin a couple of tracks from their first couple of albums which were awesome - How about Ask the Lonely for a slowie or their version of Helpless oir even Without The One You Love. Thanks for a great show keep up the good work--pity we dont have the gigs down here that you enjoy Adam Kijowski Just heard 'I Can't Help Myself',Chuck Carter on Brunswick. What a great bit of uplifting Soul.Perhaps you could track it down and play it.I can't find it on CD compilation?. Mary-I think a Brunswick feature would be great. Adam Paul /Barnsley Great Programme. Went to the Nottingham Palais, late 60's early seventies. Jimmy Ruufin, Jrn Walker and others appeared. Who sang 'the love I lost' or something like that. was it harold Melvin ? Deb ( Wolves) Hi Mary, that track is by "Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon". Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I'm " Billy no mates" this week, no where to go and no one to go with. I am feeling very sorry for myself, so could you please play a old favourite of mine "Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache". Thanks Mary. Ray Powers Mary, good evening, For a record that is regarded by many Ns fans as not NS, A touch of Velvet sure fills up some air time. Does anybody remember something by Rex Gavin and the mighty Ravers ( Cravers ) Sock it to em JB. It used to get played a lot at the Carlton and Adelphi in Slough. If you have it any chance of some air time. Many thanks Ray Powers Jaybee Can Ruy Gaskell get in touch with me please? It's about Ray Lake. While they were over here, we met them at Brighouse and the Middleton Allnighter and I met them again a week later at the Stoke Allnighter - they're a lovely couple and I really enjoyed their company. What a small world this world of Northern Soul is!! Please say hi to them and to anyone who knows me from the many soul dos I go to on a regular basis. Carol (derbyshire) Purple Haze. It may not have stood the test of time but trust me, that was a big sound in the early 70's! It was great to hear it, just for the memories. Does anyone remember Niki hokie (spelling) by P J Probie (I think)? It was played on Sounds of the 60's a couple of weeks ago. Another one 'of its day' Phil in Orich - (Horwich without the H & W) Hi Mary, Wonder if you could help, you played Nolan Porter's - If Only I could Be Sure, last night (16.09.05) and I could not believe I had not heard this brilliant song before, and I'm getting on! Anyway I've spent most of Saturday afternoon trying to locate a copy of it without success and I thought you may be able to help, the version you played, was it on a 45' or on CD? If it was on CD could you possibly help and let me have the details please. Which begs the question on your CD versus vinyl debate. I am lucky to have my music on both vinyl and CD, but that's not important to me, it's the music itself. sylvia dean Andy has a very good point. There is still a LOT of vinyl around. Joe my hubby and soul mate of 35 years (and both were Twisted Wheel regulars ) has such a great collection , over 500 vinyls + LPs + we are always buying CDs` when we discover yet another great single we remember!! But there is nothing like going to a gig or putting on a bit of vinyl. I think Mary Fox has done such a lot to revitalise the scene. We regularly attend any venues we can and network to all our friends about venues and the scene in general. We have cought up with so many old friends as a result and its been really great. We are off to New York In April (A little plug here.) Go on to Gold Soul website for info. Should be a great week. Are you going Mary ???????????? Twiggy To Chris in Perth, hey Chris I know all the Castle lads who you are on about and yes THE CASTLE LADS were always one of the first to have the lastest sounds of which we all shared the Knowledge of the Northern Scene by swapping our seconds or borrowing from each other, thats the Scene I remember back in those dark days from the past but the music that brought through some light in those cold winter days, our winters have improved since then and our summer this time was as nearly hot as you Aussies get, which local Soul nites did you go. Ean Nantwich Hey Mary hows it goin?we are off back down to the west country soon to live and will have to listen to ya on line from the end of the month....or get a bleedin big ariel...anyway me babs its been great being back in the land of northern soul where I was weaned on the best music and will keep tuning in on the net to keep up and keep on....please play "lend a hand'by Bobby Hutton truly one of the best keep it real Mary all the very best to you and all the crew....Peace Eanxxxxxxxxxx Sue Millard Perth WA My darling husband has just emailed youand forgot to ask for a track, I would love you to play I guess I'll always love you by the Isley Bros, soppy I know but brings so many memories back, Bob would like any Twisted Wheel Sound, Thanks Mary Love it Bob & Sue Millard Perth West Aussie Sue n bobby millard Hiya Mary we tune in every week from Perth west australia Wego to the Irish club in Perth once a month for our Northern soul injection Keep up the good work its a magic show takes us back to the clubs in manchester including the Wheel,Torch ,and blackpool mecca, K.T.F. Bob & Sue Ex Manchester Now Perth west australia X Mary Deb ( Wolves) Hi Mary, Could you please play anything by Jackie Wilson for all the people who will be dancing at Goodyears Social tonight, Thanking you. Chris Perth WA Hi Mary Thanks for playing Terry Lindsay's 'It's Over' on last weeks show. Nick played it on August 20, so nice to hear it again! I stand by the comment on the title of the show. Around 50% content of the show on average, is neither Motown or Northern Soul. To the listener who asked. I'm Chris Coates. In Oz since 1990. Ex- Tunstall, Talke and Alsager.Biggest influece in Soul music were the 'Caste Lads. One of them, Geoff Amphlett was the first to Perth in 1982.(Thanks Geoff!) Brother Anton also a regular listener here, Plus other Poms who are also soul fans. They have both sent messages recently. another Billy Stewart track for them and all our mates and families back home in Soul-on-Trent please. Ross Burt,Falkirk: Motowner... My heart lifted when I read your playlist for show 27.8.05. I was hoping to hear QUICKSAND which I requested to celebrate the 3CD release of the Holland-Dozier-Holland Story. This is a phenomenal, uplifting and altogether inspiring collection!! So again - QUICKSAND please?! Keepin' the faith ... Ross. Jem Nicholls What a great show! I was bored (as usual) with telly and started taking a look around on the BBC website and came across your show. It was so interesting especially after seeing the Northern Soul play that did the rounds a few months ago. ANd contrary to one 'reviewee' I think you present it very well without loosing the local Cheshire atmosphere. I live in Hampshire now but was born in Alsager (many years ago!) Good on yer Mary! malc Potts Mary Vixen. Purple Haze. Biggest load of you know what I've heard you play yet. Still love the prog though. How could any one be so ungallant to say your prsentation is weak. If you weren't so good, I wouldn't listen, great music or not. The fact you read out that remark proves a lot and possibly shows up a tendency towards insecurity, or maybe even jealousy from that cad! Keep on keeping on Mary, I love it. Andy Scoffin just to add some fuel to vinyl v CD debate the next Kings Hall all nighter is being billed as "£1m pounds worth of records being spun" - now thats a lot of CD's or some very rare 7"'s Russell Hi Mary, I think that holiday done you the world of good. Last weeks show was the best for some time - full of classic Motown that just gets better with age. Please can you play Aint No Mountain High Enough - the Diana Ross/Supremes version for my dear friend Rachael. I'm in the process of converting her to the sound. Tim Bickerdike Hi Mary... Been a while since I have listened to the show but I'm back now! Love the mix of styles though I'm a northern lad at heart. Living in Dewsbury in West Yorks we seem to be well served for soul nights but would love to plug one thats coming up soon. Its a Soul and Motown night at St Marys Social Club, Cross bank, Batley. Friday 7th Oct 8 'til late and ONLY £2 on the door. I went for the first time last month and feel that it needs promoting a little as the crowd there were really friendly. Cheers Tim B Dick- PortValeWay WakeyWakeyCampers- I was a (very) young bluecoat in 1968 at Weymouth and on Radio Pontin we had 'Morning Melody' in which we had to wake the guests for brealfast. The preferred records were Mantovani etc, but I had 2 LP'S, Sam & Dave, and Four Tops, which I used to play at full volume. Wow, it was awesome, the whole camp rocked, but unfortunately the camp manager blew a fuse and sacked me when I ignored his warning. However, the campers had a protest and I was reinstated, but my LP's mysteriously disappeared from Radio Pontin. The next season I was at Pontins St Marys Bar, Brixham as entertainments manager, where we quickly adopted the camp song 'At St Marys Bay', a la Chubby Chequer, 'At The Discotheque. Happy days and good memories of the Ritz, Samanthas, and Scotch Club in Bournemouth & Torquay. All 100% soul clubs in those days. Diane Rhyl Found your programme a few months ago - love the music. Reminds me of THe Palace in Rhyl and Payne's Landudno. I've so many of the records up in the loft,I was a great collector in my day. I hope I find something to play them on. One of my favoutites is In Orbit by Joy Lovejoy,to save me raiding the loft please play it. Kep up the good work. Twiggy To Nigel Akehurst, trust me on this one, The Soul Scene as that many underground sounds yet to be broken onto the Soul Scene, I'm still hearing sounds now and they all weren't produced in the 60's, classic example SOMETHING TO FALL BACK ON by Lamont Dozier, i was listening to his cd last night and I thought to myself that would have been a Monster sound in the earlier days, Northern Soul will never lose its NAME but tracks like the ones mentioned would have been called Modern Soul, it doesn't matter to me what banner it goes under BUT these tunes need to be spun. I think some of the new stuff is a bit to horney for my tastes but there are some great tunes getting spun by Tricky on his show, one that comes to mind is It Ani't Easy by Freestyle great new sound but not got a release yet, so Soul Music as progressed but the sounds of our youth will always play and be the best in our ageing minds, its a shame we still can't do the back drops but that doesn't mean we can't learn the kids how to do them. Keith Beardmore Great show as always Mary, but I think you may have played the wrong Breakaway Steve Karmen track, nice to hear the instrumental but I would have possibly thought the request would be for the vocal version that was played at the Torch etc.Regarding Ians website comments re-your presenting I think they are unfair, your presenting is great, your northern soul knowledge improving by the week, everyone knows before starting this show you had little history and knowledge of the vast amount of northern soul music available,I think you make no secret of that, and you have played the wrong tracks by the wrong person even from time to time, but you are the right person for the programme, if we had one of the knowledgeable top DJ`s no doubt we would get lots of rare vinyl that would appeal to people like myself but not the mainstream listener around the world, and I am sure the popularity of the show would dwindle.I think having Nick Marshall`s wealth of soul knowledge and involvement provides the right balance for a great show. Drew Colby Drew Colby ,Port Orange Fla.U.S.A.Dear Mary,I,ve enjoyed In orbit by Joy Lovejoy & Baby I need your lovin,by Abdul Fakir ,Levi Stubbs ,Renaldo "Obie"Benson& Larry Peyton( collectively -The Four Tops, from 1964.Thank you ,Drew Colby. Nigel Akehurst Iv'e just heard the comments made by the guy from Oz about soul being diverse and I have to agree with him in respect of his comments regarding Northern Soul in the early 70's. The heydays were clearly the late 60's. Once the beat slowed down in the 70's the music just was not the same. The dance floor fillers will always be from the 60's. Still keeping the faith! PS looking forward to 'You get your kicks' Bernie in Fairoak Hi Mary (and Steve in Mission Control), Don't like to be too greedy with requests but any chance of tunes for 3 girls I know? (i)Cover Girl by Carl Spencer - I know you keep on about Eddie Holman and his violins but what other soul tracks have a KAZOO as lead instrument? (ii)Tough Girl by Billy Arnell - just brings back memories of sitting under the palm trees at Tiffs in 'Castle as the organ echoed around on a Sunday in the mid 70's and finally (iii)Country Girl by Vickie Baines - can't hear much Country or Western in this one! You're doin a crackin' job of keepin the Northern Flag flyin' Mary. If only you'd been into Northern at Brum Uni, you'd have had some crackin nights in the Founders Room! (even had a nighter for about 10 of us in the Post Grad hut! Cheeeers, Bernie JOE / WREXHAM HI MARY, PLEASE CAN YOU GIVE A MENTION FOR A SOUL NIGHT AT THE RAFA CLUB IN WREXHAM ON SEPTEMBER 9th 7.30 TIL 12 N. SOUL & MOTOWN,DJS KEV JONES AND GUEST DJ. CAN YOU PLAY A SONG, ANY SONG FROM THE TEMPATIONS ON THE 9/09/05 ON FRIDAY IF POSSIBLE. THANKYOU BRADFORD WESTYORKSHIRE Dave Fyfe hi mary i just found your radio show great stuff. my older brother did it he used to move the funicher out of the way to make a dance floor i copy every move and in primary seven my self and two other friends got up and soul danced in frunt of the hole school, then at school camp we did it again and some girl wanted our otografs great memerys, i even made it to the tinny (THE TIN HUT) a youth group of sorts in edinburgh scotland. i have always loved northern soul music just feels right. its like a religin to me if you want to worship on cd thats fine or vinal what the important thing is that we all let it take us to heaven. im 39 and i live in canada i think im the only northern soul person i know, i have sold some people on to it but im having a hard time all the clubs over there. i do a little d.jing and have some nothern cd i would love to do an all nighter can you help. i know its not that simple to get some thing up and running but im in. is there any one out there in western canada that wants to try it, just a dream to get a soul club going but you never know thanks dave tony o'farrell great show mary.i really enjoy listening to your show when surfing the net.loads of info.great chinwags about the old days.music superb.Nottinghamnuttysoulie Howly Mary.. Sitting here in Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire. Listening on web to Friday's Show. Kim Weston, Betty Everett, Frank Wilson & Jimmy Clarke... In My Opinion the Best tracks of the week. Just about fell out of my chair when you read out my message.. Cheers.. I first got hooked on Northern Soul at Paynes Cafe Royal in Mostyn Street Llandudno ( Sadly now the Co-Op). We were enthralled by tales of the guys who went to the Twisted Wheel in Manchester... & the Local DJ ( Big E ) in Paynes played these fantastic sounds every Saturday night... Marvellous. A big favourite from that era was Tony Clarke - Ain't Love Good, Ain't Love Proud. It used to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up... If you could play that on your show.. you could make a happy man feel very old... Perfect..... I Never managed to get to the Wheel.. A Huge regret... But for me.. The Golden Torch was THE Place... I had a fantastic time there... Great Music, Great Dancing, Great People, Great Friends, I really only went to Stoke & Blackpool. The Wheel was too early for Me & Wigan came too late.... But The Music for each era is still fantastic.... How can music like that send a shiver right through you & get you feet tapping.... & a natural desire to clap along... Does the music of today produce the same feelings .. or were we just really lucky to be at the right place in time... Really Great Show Mary.. Paul (N0rwich Hi Mary, Brilliant show tune in always, although the reception isn't too good in Norwich, so always listen to it again on the PC. Can't get enough of Northern, eat, sleep and breath it. Only ever had one proper Allnighter in Norwich at the 'Samson & Hercules' back in 70's. Keep the Faith Paul x x x Chris Lovett-Soultime-Portsmouth Hi Mary, how about playing the Topics-Womens Liberation, and adding it to your Floorfillers list. As for cd v vinyl, to the listener it shouldnt matter, but when youre playing it, theres so much satisfaction, selecting, seeing, feeling, holding, cueing and playing it. Sheer heaven. Dave (Portsmouth) Hi Mary, found your show after a search on the net and am now an avid listener via the net. Hearing about all the soul nights going on up north makes me a bit jealous although I am a regular at Chris Lovett's Soultime here in Pompey (hi Chris). Also feel I have to mention that not everybody listening to your show are the wrong side of 40 or are nostalgic for 'the good old days'. I and many 'youngsters' like me love the music and the scene. Anyway many thanks for an excellent show. Andy Scoffin SOULED OUT - The Film. Hi all - have found some more info about the proposed film. "Togged up, Turned On and seriously Souled Out" is how its currently being billed. It is in development and produced by Ipso Films of Newcastle. It is centred around two young lads from the North east coming of age set in 1974 against a "backdrop" of explosive Northern Soul ( email info@ippsofactofilms.com or Tel : 0191 230 2585). Writers are Jeff williams and Shimmy Marcus. Producers are Edwina Alderson and steve Bowden. so if you fancy a part or passing on some of your knowledge phone or email them. john - Nantwich Please dont drop Northern Soul from the programme title. Many of us are proud to identify with a type of music known to most people as Northern Soul. I have no objection to other Motown type tracks being played but please don't destroy our heritage. ayupmeduck Hi Mary, Your attention must have been elswhere when you made out last weeks playlist. Just in case you need to find out what you played here it is :-) Be young, be foolish, be happy - The Tams / What's easy for two - The Temptations / Talk of the grapevine - Donald Haight / The pain gets a little deeper - Darrow Fletcher / You better check yourself - Soul Brothers Six / Do I love you (indeed I do) - Frank Wilson / Lover - The Delites / Something for my people - The Greatest Little Soul Band In The Land / Love, love, love - Bobby Hebb / A little bit hurt - Julian Covay and the Machine / The sound of my man - Theola Kilgore / Helpless - Kim Weston / All that's good - Barbara McNair / Gettin’ mighty crowded - Betty Everett Girls are out to get you - The Fascinations / By yourself - JD Martin / I don’t wanna fuss - Sugarpie DeSanto / Stop what you're doing - The Playthings / Sweet darlin’ - Jimmy Clarke / Touch of velvet, sting of brass - Mood Mosaic / More, more, more of your love - Bob Brady and the Con-Chords / Wade in the water - Ramsey Lewis / Never love a robin - Barbara and Brenda / Seven day fool - Etta James / It keeps rainin’ - Fats Domino / S.O.S. - Edwin Starr / Try my true love - Marvin Gaye / Something Stupid - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell tarameduck RAY POWERS Mary hello. listening to you in Kuwait. ( usually 2 days late )I found you recently by accident whilst rummaging around the BBC main site. With reference to the show's title. I would have given it a miss if the M word hadn't been there. Modern soul and R&B is so boring I dont bother. I was'nt a big NS fan but I never realised how many I knew from a murky 30-40 years of loving soul music. As I write this you are playing Mood Mosaic ( which short circuited )Last week you had a lady who mentioned the Carlton in Slough and the one record that sticks in my mind about that place is Mood Mosaic, they played it to death. As for Radio Caroline it introduced me to Motown and indirectly my 2nd wife. Any of your listeners remember Al's Warehouse Thrapston Northants, It played great soul but could never get the customers in. If you have the Tops "baby I need your loving" please dedicated it to my lovely wife Mel, missing her lots. Great stuff keep it going. Ray Powers Sam in Sunny Stockport Hi Mary - Great show! Tuned in on listen again as the reception isn't too great in Stockport! Any chance of The Vonettes "Touch my heart" or Gene Chandler "Mr Big Shot" - my favouritest soul tracks ever... Thanks, Sam x Viv (From very sunny Exeter) Dear Mary, Great show first class music, keep it up. The 'Floor Fillers' is a great idea, but what about ' Songs That Have Never been Played On This Show'! That will get a few people thinking. Secondly, when is you show going to be on national radio, it must be listened to by more people than 'Fridy Night is Music Night'if you include internet listeners & people like myself who feel robbed if they don't here it at least 3 times in the week. Lastly why can't we have a section where you can listen to selected previous shows, i know this done on some stations. My floorfiller is 'The Right Track - Billy Butler', KTF Viv ( PS. I'm a he not a she, thanks.) barry padgett Hi again Mary - vinyl or cd,I dont think it should make any difference. for instance this is what happened last night at a venue ,I asked the DJ if he had "ever again" by bernie williams, great record but very rare (on the original label)fetching about £1000 so he said no but I have it by some other singer same backing track different vocals. it was ok but it was not bernie williams. the point I am making is it is not just vinyl it has got to be on the original label or many DJs wont play them. you can get bernie williams on one of the white label type vinyls but thats still no good. so the punters have to do without many great records because of this original label vinyl attitude. another one is "heart your made of stone" by the magnetics -great record, but again very rare,on the original label. best regards ruy g. hi mary, a great track from the 70s.. which i'm sure is a fave track with all our soul buddies out there,, 'Major Harris' why cant we be lovers.. a pure classic mary, plz oblige. ta ruy.. ps.. still cant get in touch with Anna H.?? peter bentley(benko) hi Mary ref : Floorfillers Frankie Valli, your,e ready now great show . Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I am an avid listener now, great show last week. I have to agree with Mike Meir Heath and his choice of floor filler YOU GET YOUR KICKS by Mitch Ryder, guaranteed to get folks movin'. LAURENCE OLIVER Hi Mary, I dont think you may have got my last mail as it dos'nt seem to be on the message board. can you PLEASE play any stomper track for two soulies i met at the July 2005 Whitby weekender they always listen to the show. their names are ALAN & DEBBIE; i don't see them much as they are antipodeans now although they originate from MIDDLESBROUGH CLEVELAND. the scene up here is stil strong, i've heard that Kev Roberts is putting on a gig at the EMPIRE THEATRE in MIDDLESBROUGH some time this year. can you also give this a plug as the more the merrier thanks in advance, and sorry i missed sending you your 21st birthday card again!!! Martin And Robert Wilson Ey up Mary,It's Us from sunny Scunny again! Is there any chance of playing'Do I love You by Frank Wilson before my Son Robert wears out my CD!! Thanks Mary M&R Twiggy To Richard, It shouldn't be about vinyl or cd, its the music. just like some cd's, some vinyl is recorded poorly and a classic example is when you turn a piece of vinyl up to loud, it gets muffled. Then you get vinyl thats recorded like Yvonne Bakers YOU DIDN'T SAY A WORD which sounds better than any of my cd's and thats from 1964. how many times have you gone back to the record player and had to turn them up or down and when taped, it comes out on the tape some loud and some quiet? I think the cd's in general sorts this kind of difference out and will sound better. Ok just say you are an up and coming Soul Dj and have different tastes of Soul Music weither its vinyl or cd and you have been paying to get in Soul Nites hoping you might get the odd tune or 2 played... one, ifs its cd "forget it" are most of the Dj's reply and if they dunna know it forget it because some are STUCK IN TIME. You must know theres some great stuff out there and we have only heard a bit of it. Mary drops the odd tune in on her show but if the Dj's on the Soul Scene think you are competion if you request something they think you shouldn't know about. I recently asked a Top Soul Dj to play NOTHINGS TO GOOD FOR MY BABY by THE SPRINGERS or THE ETHICS which ever you want to call it; his reply was hey this is a 4 grand record and I haven't got it. I said I have and I got it on a RARE CD from America by THE ETHICS will you play it, he then said are you trying to get me lynched? I still don't know to this day what he ment but that was a classic example and haven't been back to that Soul Nite in 2 years. they keep saying where are the Next Generation of Soul Dj's coming from, I hope not from the same planet as some of them should be sent to. Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I've got to agree with Mike Mier Heath, You get your kicks by Mitch Ryder is a great floor filler. Looking forward to Friday Paul - East London Enjoy listening through the week from 'Olympic' Leyton, soon to be a new venue for northern and disco sounds... Would prefer the recorded version to be edited if poss to avoid history of Stoke's transport system! Any chance of "Speechless" by the Isley Brothers? Terrah. Chris Lovett Hi Mary, Love your show. I'm a Northern/Motown/Soul DJ all from vinyl, I might add)Running a monthly in Portsmouth called Soultime. The next is Sat 17th Sept 8-12 at the Conservative club Southsea. I play exactly your mix of music, but have the unfortunate task of correcting an error you made on the 26th Aug. show where you said Chuck Jackson-I'll never forget you which was of course Chris Jackson(UK Soul city) or Marke Jackson(US Jamie). I would have ignored it as a slip of the tongue but it says the same on your playlist. Hope your not offended. Chris. PS I will be putting my info on your events listing, and if you ever travel South of Watford, you will be most welcome. Chris Perth Down Unda Hey Up Mary. No Otis Redding since June 17??? Please put this right! Anything from Otis Blue would be good! Thanks! Chris - Perth Down Unda G'Day Soul Fans Never thought I would ever hear Terry Lyndsey, Sam Dees and Esther Phillips on radio, but it was a real treat to hear all three in one go via Tinternet!(August 2oth) Reckon it's about time you dropped the Northern Soul/Motown header. The programme has become (rightly) much more than that! Soul music is too diverse and wonderful too be narrowed down to two fields. Not to to have widened your approach would have been an injustice. Sorry, many of you who adore it, but a lot of the Northern stuff from the 70's is 3rd rate. Barry Padgett Hi Mary listen to your show every week on't tinternet..love it didnt get chance to send in my floorfiller..but I cant believe the valentino's sweater than the day before was not metioned ,pure northern dance record Best regards...Barry ayupmeduck Just listened to the show from 27-8-2005, you're getting better at doing a real playlist:-)That Marvelettes track still gives me shivers down my spine, even after all this time, almost in tears, must have it played at my very, very, very, very distant funeral. Thanks Phil at Texasmusic45s@aol.com Chae Riley Hi Yah, The Northern Soul Scene in New Zealand has finally started officially... The first step was to get the web site up and running...this was completed at the weekend so would be extremely grateful if you can plug the site for me please Mary :) http://northernsoul.co.nz The sites still in it's early days and there's more images/digital tracks, info and news to go up but hopefully this will increase as membership and site visitors increase. Step two's the marketing and advertising of the site...this will take a bit of time. Step 3 is to get the first Northern Soul Night in New Zealand going, one in the North Island then one in the South Island and from there an Allnighter or Alldayer. Your shows brilliant and you do a wonderful job so again I would appreciate as much of a plug on air. Many thanks in advance & keeping the faith down under. Dave Mercer (Scunthorpe) Re: Floorfillers Doris Troy - I'll do anything Greg Persil advert : Did some surfing and here is the answer very time the ad comes on I am instantly hooked by the drum roll. It certainly sounds like the Funk Brothers; at the very least it's a sample, or they were moonlighting again! Don't recognise the voice, it's not one of the major vocalists. In feel it's like Frank Wilson stuff, and may be call "We've Got Good Thing". I've e-mailed Persil, awaiting a reply * Persil have replied: Thank you for your e-mail. The music you refer to was composed especially for the new Persil advert. It is untitled and not available on general release. Thank you for contacting us. If it's modern I'm sure they've done some sampling. malc potts Hey Mary Vixen. Can't listen on a Friday, so thank God for T'internet. Floorfillers? JJ Barnes. Real Humdinger. Bit of a corker or wot? Love from Manchester xxxx theresa Hi Mary, I too like Mike from meir heath would love to hear 'you get your kicks'Mitch Ryder great record.Thanx Howly Vinyl vs CD vs MP3 etc. Who cares how the music is presented.. its the Tune/lyrics/beat that is important.. not the medium its presented with. Those who are Loyal to NS on vinyl... probably still wear Fur Trimmed Snorkel Hood Parkas & Drive to work on their Lambrettas.. or have they moved with the changing times & wear normal clothes & drive cars.. ( PS. The World isn't flat any more .. it's round... Whats the difference between CD & Vinyl.. They're both same shape & made of plastic Round... Change with the times & stop friggin wingeing. Watch out the sky doesn't hit you when it falls !! Mary . Great Show.. Try not to have any more holidays on Fridays.. :-) mike meir heath hi mary see you played mitch ryder break out on last show any chance of swapping floorfiller request to YOU GET YOUR KICKS also by MITCH RYDER as i dont think you have played it before thanks. Richard Like Alan from Manchester I was a listener to Radio Caroline and if it wasn't for them, we'd never have heard of half of the records played today on the northern scenr.Johnny Walker, Emporer Rosko, Ugli Ray, they introduced so many records to me that otherwise I would have missed. Re vinyl v CD. I'm afraid it's got to be vinyl. So many CD recordings are slightly different to the originals. For example 'I'm Gonna Run Away From You' played by Mary, I know its CD cos its so different to my vinly copy. There are many other examples. Tim & Valda Been on holiday and the playlists we've missed look brilliant. Got some catching up to do !! Any chance you'd make some CD's of the shows ? Stoke n Soul like fish n chips!! Listened to the Barbara McNair cd today and there are some corkers on it. Anything tonight greatly appreciated. Ta Mary Steve in London Hi Mary how about The Contours A Little Misundastanding as a floor filler garenteed JOE / WREXHAM HI MARY, PLEASE CAN YOU GIVE A MENTION FOR A SOUL NIGHT AT THE RAFA CLUB IN WREXHAM ON SEPTEMBER 9th 7.30 TIL 12 N. SOUL & MOTOWN,DJS KEV JONES AND GUEST DJ. JOHN " BIFF " GRIFFITHS ( BIRCHFIELD.) MANY THANKS, JOE. Bernard & Mary Kiernan Thanks a million Mary for playing our request for our friends in Houston Texas - it made for a great occasion and they were absolutely gobsmacked when it came through !! Joe I've started going to northern nights again around the Potteries and thoroughly enjoy them. However, I do feel inadequate re the dancing that goes on. I manage ok, but could do a lot better and would love to be able to move like others do, so effortlessly. Any chance of anyone giving a 30 minute lesson on how to do it properly? John Condie Have discovered the show on 'listen again' and can't believe my luck. Northern has always had a big following in Swanage, Dorset and many of us used to make the 6 hour trip to the Casino back in the 70's. 6 hour one way that was! All night dancing and 6 hours back! mad or what ..but it was worth it. The show is great and I will be listening every week from now on - more than once! Andy from Crewe Hi Mary You may know about this but it's a nice one share with all Soulies. Northern soul is about the big screen with a full length feature film about the scene about to be made. Not alot of details about who is in it but the makers promise lots of authenticity, set in 1974 so should feature Wigan Casino very heavily. Now heres the best bit auditions are taking place for extras inparticular dancers but wait for it you have to be between 18 and 30 to audition. That obviously counts a few of us out. The film is to be called Souled Out. Adam Kijowski-London Ipod's I have been asked about Ipod's on this site and transfering all my music onto it.A 30GB(photo) unit will cost you about £250(£212 if your lucky to be traveling abroad and can get it tax free-uk airports or US/Far East) You will need a computer with 30 GB free to use as a server to the pod as the principle is you put the cd into the computer, load it onto the hard drive through Itunes that you get with the pod.The programme then gets a track listing and artists from a linked website. You can also search the web for a picture of the cd and paste it into the pod so when a track plays you get a picture of the cd,very useful to remind you what the compilation cd looks like. The spin off is that if you spend some time on the track listing spreadsheet you get in Itunes software you can give each cd or track a genre, jazz soul, funk, mellow, crossover, etc, The possibilities are endless. Some cd's are not listed correctly so you may have to enter the information manually. You also have a facility to see duplicate songs and believe me you will be amazed on how many different cd's the same tracks appear. You can delete the duplicates. Once you have loaded up you plug in the pod and it takes in all the information from the library you have set up. You can keep adding or delete from the computer and the next time you plug in it updates the pod.Once you have loaded up you then have the possibiliy to immidiatly see for example what cd a track appears on or sort by artist, track name,cd,genre etc.You can akso play by any catagory or artist by random if you wish on any criteria.Really great to not know what's next. You can also make playlists which you could just plug into an amplifier and party !!Weeks of music in your shirt pocket!!. A mini ipod will do similar just for your favourate tracks , is half price and needs say 6 GB free computer space. I know there are other players out there and the pod is not perfect especilly when it comes to battery capacity. Hope this helps as it's been a hard learnin curve. Anyway, got 66 tracks starting with Love!! ayupmeduck To Andy from Crewe, if you Google that Persil song it says that it was composed specially for the advert. Twiggy To Derek(Oxford) Hi Derek, I have often wondered why some Soul Nites are for over 25 years olds, perhaps some think they might sample Northern or Soul Sounds and introduce them into other music scenes, I can understand Dj's being a bit uptight over this, a recent example was Fat Boy Slim with Sliced Tomatoes, if my memory was right he was in a band then married someone in the media and ended up on radio one, some want everything don't they. The Soul Scene I remembered was Love You baby, You Better Keep Her, My Man Is Sweet Man, Too Late, Our love Is In The Pocket, You Don't Want Me Nomore. 2 songs from this list Our love Is In The Pocket and You Don't Want me Nomore mean alot, On hearing that Darrell Banks had been shot I thought the whole scene had ended before it started and Major Lance I met and he sang You Don't Want Me Nomore just for me and he said hey man how do know that song, perhaps some people were just ahead of thier time and perhaps I'm being a bit hard on some Dj's but they weren't the ONLY ONES THERE, I did the fashion, I did the dancing and I did the collecting, I didn't do drugs my drug was the music, when I said I'm being a bit hard on the Dj's, What I really mean't is this, I would love to have Darrell Banks back and love to have another chat to Major Lance, I often wondered why so few people turned up to see Major Lance after the Torch Nite he did but glad really because I guess I wouldn't have met him, going back to the Soul Nites locally they were electric and Colin Curtis always produced the goods ALWAY'S PLAYING NEW or DIFFERENT RECORDS and I can never ever seeing Colin covering up any title of a record, Colin or someone once said that he put together the Soul Packs in Manchester to this day I dunna know if its true but I brought alot of them and stupid me got rid of them not knowing that some of them would go on to be Monster Soul Sounds all on the original labels, thats the Scene I loved and miss. I think the Soul Scene is Bigger now and is still growing fast but just lacks a LITTLE HEART some should think about the Scene and not the BUCK and give others a go, you know what they might like it. Big Tip on a Big Tune and only on 45 Vinyl, oh sorry theres that swear word again(VINYL) I WANT TO KNOW MORE by KIRSTY and I got my copy off a Guy called Steve Plum for a tenner, its a throw back to the Seventies and what a Monster. My Top Ten at this moment are 1. I must be Losing You Marion Stewart 2 Stormy O C Smith 3 I want to know more Kirsty 4 Where will you go when the partys over Archie Bell and the Drells 5 Gonna Give you respect Marvin gaye 6 I wanna be where you are Marvin Gaye 7 Heart be still Jackie Moore 8 Thousand Shades of Blue The Dramatics 9 I'd rather be with you The Mighty Dells 10 You Didn't Say A Word Yvonne Baker and these ten will be different tomorrow if you catch my drift See You I could write all night about the Soul Scene Deb (Wolves) Hi Mary, I have only just found out about your show on BBC Radio Stoke and it's great. You bring back so many sweet memories. I'm already looking forward to next Friday. Andy from Crewe Someone must know this : The latest Percil advert features a soul track of some description, sounds great for the few seconds they play but I am concious it could be not be all that it sounds. 25 seconds of a track has prooved to be decieving before. Anyone any ideas what / who it is ? Thanks in advance of some suggestions. Mick Crowe Fantastic to hear the great James Carr, what an incredible voice. Only down side was that the finish was cut short by the editing for the news as I was listening on the Listen Again service. Mick Crowe Seaford Sussex Sadie Brilliant show on Friday Nick. Never quite made the Torch as was a tad too young but Friday's classics took me right back to the sweaty room of Mr M's at Wigan Casino. Loved it, and will keep listening to it all week. Baby's coming back to me had me dacing round the house. havent heard it for years. Wonderful! steve farr oops soz mary northern ok and me 50 in october xxx Derek (oxford) Mary, Just read Twiggy's comment's His veiws are so near to mine, I'm inclined to think he is my long lost brother !!! Del. derek smith (oxford ) Re: Vinyl v cd, Hello people ! Are we losing the plot here ? does it matter which media we listen to the music on ? It's the music that is important is it not, or should we listen to the show on a valve radio ? Alan from Manchester I've been dying to join the vinyl vs cd debate, so here goes. I'm now 56 and have loved soul music since July 64 (I was 14 coming up to 15) when Radio Caroline (especially the North Ship) started blasting out stuff I'd never heard before - I'm a regular now at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester (which is very much my spiritual home) and only regret my strict father not allowing me to attend in the 60s! It seems to me that the vinyl scene is all about DJ exclusivity - I wasn't on the scene during the Wigan etc days, but from what I hear DJs would cover up records to maintain their exclusive position and that has continued to this very day by the use of vinyl. I attend northern dos most Fridays and Saturdays here in Greater Manchester and, much as I like the top DJs and the tracks they play, to a degree it's their vinyl collections that keep them at the top of the tree. Just go to the smaller venues and listen to the B or C list DJs and the tracks they play - to a great extent they are going to be the cheaper, more easily available vinyls. As regards my own collection, I am a technophile and much prefer the clean sound of a CD - less crackles, scratches and pops. I just don't get the "warm sound of vinyl" comment - I get no thrill hearing a stylus in a groove. It's the music that counts for me! I certainly don't have the money to shell out for expensive vinyl, but I am more than happy to buy CDs (I've bought over a hundred soul CDs in the last year) and I will buy vinyl if I cannot get the track on CD (bought about half a dozen 45s in the last 3 months that way). The only potential problem if the soul venues switched over to allow alternatives such as CD, mp3 etc is my fear that we would get all venues sounding the same, playing their safe tracks, since we would then have level pegging. The mix of the music would be bound to change as it would be a brave individual who ventured to play the more obscure stuff, easier to play safe. Maybe that would threaten the financial viability of certain large venues - everything in life has a price and a knock-on - the problem is that, very often, we cannot forsee the consequences. So, on balance, even though I am pro-CD in principle, in practice, I do want to see the present vast range of venues (certainly over here in Manchester) continue. Maybe the answer is to get DJs to be a bit more adventurous as regards the tracks they play. Twiggy To Chris Mandley, Hey Chris I dunna want to waste my time with that sad lot of OLD GRUMPY DJ's thanks for the plug thou. To Adam Kijowski, The Ipod is here and some say its the in thing, how much are they. Ross Burt, Falkirk, Scotland: Motowner as ever... Impressive show as always Time to celebrate the triple CD release of Holland-Dozier-Holland Story:Heaven Must Have Sent You. Brian Holland may still yet be "scratching his head" at HDH's success but this release is phenomenal, inspiring and worthy, worthy,worthy!!!... play QUICKSAND please? ayupmeduck Is this the playlist for 12-8-2005 Mary meant to show us ? Brenda Holloway - Starting the hurt all over again Edwin Starr - My weakness is you Betty Everett - It's gettin' mighty crowded Father's Angels - Bok to Bach The Supremes - He's all I got Chuck Wood - Seven days is too long Baltimore & Ohio Marching Band - Condition red Bobby Hebb - Love, love, love Martha Reeves & the Vandellas - Third finger left hand The Contours - First I look at the purse Chairmen of the Board - Everything's Tuesday Stevie Wonder - Angie girl Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell - Oh how I miss you The Four Tops - I got a feeling Madelaine Bell - Picture me gone San Remo Strings - All turned on The Temptations - My girl The Supremes - There's no stopping us now Darrell Banks - Our love is in the pocket Earl Wright - Thumb a ride The Elgins - Stay in my lonely arms Jack Montgomery - Dearly beloved The Fantastic Four - I feel like I'm falling in love The Isley Brothers - Who could ever doubt my love The Marvellettes - Your cheatin' ways Junior Walker - Sweet soul Martha Reeves & the Vandellas - One way out The Dynamic Superiors - One nighter Kiki Dee - My whole world ended The Monitors - Time is passing by Chris Clark - The beginning of the end The Detroit Spinners - I'll always love you. But of course I'm such a smart a--e my list is probably wrong as wellm tarameducks dave foster keen soulie from ashby delazouch just found you ,brill , keep the faith, ps where can i get a b side cd youve recently played , fabulous dave Adam Kijowski I listen to your show on the listen again facility. You mentioned the issue on vinal or CD.I have probably purchased up to 250 CD's all in the genre of your show plus funk jazz etc. This has lead me to discover much music that I never knew existed.I am not interested in obtaining any more vinal although I do posess a whole bunch of LP's from the seventies. Over the past months I have slowly been transfering all my CD's onto my 30GB Ipod. I plan to get some of the vinal onto the Ipod too. I have no preference what format a DJ would play. I do however also like hearing stuff that is not available on CD. Now here's something to think about. It is quite possible for me or a DJ to turn up at an event with just an Ipod and keep playing for about two weeks day and night!. And I wouldn't really care as long as the music was good. That certainly might shock a few!! Ken Lunn Hi Mary, I listen every week here in denmark, where I've lived for the last 13 years. I was home this summer in Harrogate and had planned to meet up with two old friends from the scene... unfortunately we didn't manage to get together. Could you mention there names on your show (Shaun & Graham) and play something great for them. Keep up the good work, the faith lives on. From Ken (A true Mary Fox fan. PS loved the B-side show. chris mandley hiya mary, just like to throw in my pennith about the sad music policy of the local Northern scene ! for Gods sake PLAY THE BLOODY CD'S Nantwich -Alsager-george hotel same playlists time after time , dJ's that dont dj they just stick on records ( i can do that at wom ) its time this stupid old school rule of " we are purists , we only play vinyl " is put to bed we are the customers , i personally want to hear something different thats why i now travel out of the area , Lowton - monaco- Prestwich - preston- wigan just to hear different and refreshing sounds i only stay local if there is nothing else on , come on guys for pitys sake freshen up the local scene get out of the rut ( queens burslem should be a wake up call to you ) give us CUSTOMERS what we want ,crave , desire , NEW sounds or give TWIGGY a go !!!!!! Kay Lowe (Jersey) Hi Mary, Belated birthday wishes to you .Well what a show last week I think you surpassed youself two hours of total bliss, Angie Girl, Theres no stoppin us now, Turn to Stone, just to mention a few,Lynn is over for 2 weeks soon, no doubt we'll share a bottle or 2 and enjoy listening to the show again ( are you on your hols? ) if you are hope you have a good one. I didn't know this "scene" was still going. God bless you xx Theresa Mary, what a brilliant show. Really was excellent. So many of my favourites on there. Of course a big thank you for playing Angie girl for me. Don't let it go too long before we have another B' side show. mike meirheath hi mary what about the boston monkey and edwin stars 50 miles ? ROB HICKS Hi Mary I hav`nt contacted you for a while , but thats not to say I hav`nt been listing to your show, great as always. With the debate running regarding what constitutes a good record that always filled a dance got me thinking it would be good to hear what the listerners to this show would class as their all time quickest floor fillers, one that springs to mind for me would be "cracking up over you" by Roy Hamilton, could you give it a spin for me and lets see what else comes in. Regards Rob. Andy B-sides programme would have to include Until You Love Someone -b side of Reach Out by The Tops. A truely wonderful Motown love song. Janie - Boise Idaho USA Hi Mary, Just wanted to tell you to have a wonderful birthday..KTF Janie ruy g. hi mary, (great sounds as usual) I remember spending a great day out in chester a few years ago and on my way back to the car, walked past brannigans club where it had on the noticeboard outside "tonight... EDWIN STARR" I thought all my birthdays had come at once. It was pure chance I had deviated from my regular route.. Anyway, to top it all it was admission free, he had his full live band and did his full set of memorable hits such as war and 25 miles.. jeezz what a night.. but the best thing of all was that I actually got to meet the man at the end of the night and we chatted about members of the "real thing" who we both knew. Later Mary, ruy g. steve farr thanks for all the wonderful sounds everytime puter on norhtern pelts out full blast keep on truckin Mary tc Andy Hope (bristol) great selection from joe and sylvia especially candy by the astors we must have been going to the wheel at the same time in the 6o's. i wonder if any of your listners were at the wheel the night the cream made there first public gig? i was and i remember being dissapointed as that wasnt the kind of music we went to the wheel to hear. have you played hooked by love homer banks lately? Tony (Wolverhampton) B Sides Program Mary, Any chance of playing the Four Tops "Can't seem to get you out of my mind" next week. This was originally realeased as the B side of "Do what you gotta do" in the late 60's but was popular in the latter days at Wigan when Pat Brady used to play it. I was after it for years on vynil and finally dropped on a copy of it at Goodyears last year. Can you please also say hello to Jon H, Kevin P, and Eggy who are fellow members of the Wolverhampton Soul Police KTF Glyn Foster Hi Mary Just heard your last show on the wonderful internet (it makes great music to iron the week's shirts to! - at least if it gets too boring you can have a little hop about) and heard your answer to my plea - hear are my details for Mike: glyn.foster@homecall.co.uk; 0114 2692907; 17 Falcon Drive, Treeton, Rotherham, Yorkshire S60 5QN. Many thanks for your help in ending this 30 year quest! Glyn Mike Davis (poole Dorset) Dear folks love the show, just discovered it a couple of months ago on advice from a soulmate in exeter. Did Mary play a song called "picture me in someone elses arms"? I didnt catch the artists name, and it does not appear on the playlist. Perhaps you could advise or forward this to Mary Fox Thanks..............K.T.F. Ian Brandon from Bradford listen to your station on the internet every week on the net and enjoy the sounds you play, it brings back a lot of memories from wigan in the 70's. Could you play cause your mine by the vibrations. Malc Potts Happy Birthday, Vixen. Pete Westcott Hi Mary I went to see "Dancing in the Streets" - the Motown Revue on Saturday at the Cambridge Theatre Covent Garden and have to say I was overwhelmed with nostalgia. The cast, music, costumes and performance were an excellent tribute to the original artists and the greatest music factory ever. This is a 'must see' for all Motown enthusiasts - even the purists will find it hard to criticise this show. Watch out for the Temptations and Stevie Wonder - brilliant. PS Always look forward to listening to your show. KTF Theresa HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY, HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY. Malcolm Potts Had a great time with Nick last week. Can't you 2 do a show together? Anyhow, it's competition time. Name a record, Soul of course, with a Banjo solo. Yup, a BANJO. The prize is a smug feeling for about 3 minutes. It's from 1978 and on Motown. Any chance of playing Times a Wastin' by the Fuller Brothers. What a une. Best wishes, Malc. Ben Astles, 15 Is it possible you could play The Fife Piper - The Dynatones, Thanks Tony Anwas Just wanted to say hello to Mary and tell her what a awesome radio station she has , i live most of! the year in Pakistan but always listen to her show, takes me back to my teens at Wigan , my nan used to run the chip shop next to Wigan Casino at weekends i would go to the chip shop and listen to the dj's as they opened the windows playing records before the allniters, i would stand on the door of the chip shop chatting with the casino goers who had arrived early from all over the place getting chips and waiting excitedly for the casino to open practising there moves on the footpath as the djs warmed up, what sweet memories.believe it or not your show has quite a following in this area we turn it up full volume with the himalayas in the background and soul in our ears, awesome. i visit wigan and manchester 2/3 times a year still sounds the same no matter what country or religion ,regards Tony Andy Have to entirely agree with Twiggy comments about the current scene and it's policy's. Whats the point of having all these great finds and not hearing them just because there on CD. It seems to me some that some names in the business will encourage you to buy the CD's and then have a policy not to play them at gigs. I think I know why ;-) Bernard & Mary Kiernan Just realised we may have to listen again to the show from Houston buthat is fine too Bernard & Mary Kiernan (London) Hi Mary, Hi Nick. Great show keep it going !! We will be on vacation in Houston Texas later this month and will be able to listen to the August 12th show online. It would be brilliant if you could play a track that night for our great friends and hosts in Houston (Syamal and Christine Bhattacharya). Any track is fine but a Houston Texas theme would be fun. I can only think of two off hand -"Headquarters" by Bobby Byrd or "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell & the Drells. Keep up the great work !! Many Thanks and Best Regards ... Bernard & Mary Kiernan (London) Richard Last saturday I went to The Huntsman, Burslem. A regular northern saturday nighter, free admission and great recoreds. At 10.00pm we moved on to The George, and wished we hadn't. I've done my share of djing in the past and many years ago was told that if a record cleared the dance floor- take it off as soon as possible and play something else! Unfortunately this wasn't the case at The George when they'd have a full dance floor with 'The Right Track' or similar then clear it with a Etta James track. It was obvious what the audience wanted to hear, and it would have been so easy to keep the floor full. stewart Hi, I listened to the last show on-line and was interested to hear a 52 year old guy asking where he could go in London to listen to the old floorshakers without being embarrassed. the answer - "These Old Shoes". Great I thought [having 5 years on the old bugger ;-) being a mere 47 year old!! ;-)] so I checked it out - It says it's CLOSED on the website - is it? If so how sad and does anyone know any alternatives? Thanks in advance Keep The Faith Stewart (Ex North Park Kettering, St Ives, 69 Club BoT, Notts Palais, Whitchurch All-Dayer, Cleggy, Sams & the KGB Sheffield, THE Casino that I remeber well) Chris Perth Australia Looking through my collection of 45's, one neglected classic i pulled out was "It's Over" by Terry Lindsey. It was out on the President label,no PT232. It was released in 1969 and is a New York sound. It has a very interesting arranged for strings, and the piano plays some out of key notes to great effect. I have a very long standing mate from Newcastle, Dave Brennan to thank for putting me on to this. It really is a great work. Can you get your contacts at "Aunty" to get this one dusted off for the Castle Lads. Geoff Amphlett Mary I was at the Golden Torch when Major Lance recorded the album "Major Lance live at the Torch" I have been living in Perth, Western Australia for over twenty years and starting to get quite nostalgic in my old age. I'm looking for a copy of the LP or at least a print of the cover, can one of your listeners help? Mark Brindle I have recently discovered the show and now listen religously via the internet. Northern / 60's soul has been my music of choice for over 20 years now (my birthday is on 7th august!}. Its great to hear a 2 hour burst of great tunes via your show. Any chance of a request for a Southern Soulie? If so please give a shout out to all the Essex Soulies and Scooterists and to my long suffering wife Debbie and my two boys Frank and Fred. Any tune will do, although the drifter by ray pollard would be extra nice! keep up the good work Mark brindle Shaggy Hi Foxy Lady, Can you please play a record for Scooby as it wil be her birthday on monday the 6th. Could you play either :- Little Darlin by Marvin Gaye or Aint no Mountain High Enough by Marvin & Tammi the best versions of these classic hits. Mick Crowe Mary. Many thanks for getting round to playing Linda Jones 'For Your Precious Love'. I also enjoyed the Impressions original version played last week. Its almost a different song to the Linda Jones Version, superb though. They have got to be the best Soul group ever. I dont know what my neighbours think , hearing your songs blasting out on Friday nights down here in Sussex. Keep up the good work. Richard Nick, Enjoyed the show this week, great playlist. Cheers peter bentley(benko) hi mary thanks for playing mr bang bang man . can you please play Seven days is to long Chuck Wood & Our love is in the pocket Darrell Banks. Great show BENKO NICK PARTRIDGE Still listening to your brilliant show via the internet Mary.Could you please play Chuck Jackson Ain't no sun since you been gone.A fantastic track I hope you'll all agree. Cheers Twiggy To Nick Marshall, Hey Nick this can of worms needed to be opened, You yourself knows that local Soul Nites have been poorly attended OVER THE YEARS, it was through DIEHARDS like me who Kept the faith HOPING one day that older Dj's who have lost the way where Soul Music is concered stand down because of LACK of Numbers who attend them, no direspect but they HAD THEIR CHANCE First time around and when they only let VINYL being spun really said it all to me, YOU yourself played some MASSIVE UNDERGROUND stuff on this Fridays show, WHISPERS GETTING LOUDER and THE MIGHTY DELLS version of ITS NOT USEUSAL, Hey Nick thats what the Scene needs tracks like that which are from the past but sound if they were made yesterday, The Soul Scene is not just about how many people keep dancing on the dance floor, why do Soul Dj's think that if the dance floor is full THATS ALL SOUL MUSIC is about. You yourself did say that the Isley Brothers version of Whispers Getting Louder isn't or may have not be played on the Soul Scene WHY NOT because the MAIN Dj's only use 45 Vinyl, you tell me WHY the isleys version shouldn't get spun regular hey and dunna say its because its vinyl taken from an LP because then you will be admitting that the present Soul Djs have a strangle hold of the Soul Scene, its just snobbery, I have collected Soul records for 40 years and the LP stuff thats out there would REFRESH the SOUL SCENE thats if you can get past those who dunna want to give way, i call them sad, In this weeks issue of the BLUES and SOUL a well known Soul Dj (Paddy Grady) said a punter had a go at his playlist at a Soul night he was Djing at, I dunna blame the punter one bit, it gets frustrating after paying a tenner or high tax to get in these places to here the same playlist time after time, You yourself know THERES ALOT OF STUFF OUT THERE WAITING TO BE PLAYED so lets have new Ideas and some new faces instead of the same old soldiers creaming all the cream and leaving none for others, this scene IS ABOUT EVERONE not just a few, I want to say this, I was the last person dancing on the Last Night at THE KINGSPIN which as you know is NOW the KINGSHALL ALLNIGHTER which was 30 years ago, I approached the Council to see if I could REVIVE this Soul Night some years ago, through the BACKSTABBERS someone thought they would out do me and get there first its annoying but theres now't I could do about it, I have tried to play some stuff in local pubs only for THE BACKSTABBERS who lurk in the back ground causing problems, my gripe is hey if we canna hear differnt playlists by different Dj's instead of all these people who say this night and his night clashes with my night, my answer is SO WHAT competion is good and stop paying overated dj's to much. Glyn Foster For Mike Flynn - delighted that you may be able to help re: Fontella Bass - how can we get in touch without infringing the meassage board rules over email/phone nos/addresses? Heard it once on a radio prog in Manchester. For the uninitiated, it's really one of the best soul tunes ever. Mary, any chance of a play? Info on availability would be welcome if not. Still loving the show Mary, but can't understand the anti Motown vibe. When I was first discovering our music and people used to ask me 'What is Northern Soul', my reply was 'Imitation Motown but not as good'. Please address all comments to Malc the Heretic. By the way Mary, what a track that Platters, Washed Ashore is. Ta chuck. Just listening to Sam & Kitty, I've got Something Good on the PC. The room is dark and I'm lying down! Finally, is there a record of injuries sustained by all the forty somethings dancing like they did when they were 16? (Only joking) mike just to say thankyou for the request i asked for david and charlotte's wedding in stockholm. it worked a treat - we all had a great time. thankyou so much. sun shine soul torquay Joe I've started going to northern nights again around the Potteries and thoroughly enjoy them. However, I do feel inadequate re the dancing that goes on. I manage ok, but could do a lot better and would love to be able to move like others do, so effortlessly. Any chance of anyone giving a 30 minute lesson on how to do it properly? Gail Smith Hi Mary I listen in from Victoria in Australia on a Monday morning while preparing my Northern show which I present for a community radio station down under on a Monday night. Hard pushed to find a favourite to request - the list is endless! Here's just a few: Dee Irwin: I Can't Stand The Pain; Vibrating Vibrations: Surprise Party For Baby; Marvin Gaye: When I Feel The Need; Wally Cox: This Man; First Choice: This Is The House Where Love Died; Olympics: Same Old Thing; Contours: Just A Little Misunderstanding; Four Tops: I'm In A Different World, etc etc etc.....The list goes on! It's a hard slog keeping the faith down here slap bang in the middle of country and western territory but I'm doing my best! gazzer (ruy gaskell) Hi mary, ray lake.. an original member of The real thing.. was like a true brother to me. We were both in a kids home together when we were about 13 yrs old, and he always usd to look out for me and me for him.. We both used to watch "top of the pops" and fantasize about how one day we'd both be pop stars. (I'm glad one of us made it) I remember one day ray got really annoyed with me that I couldn't quite get the harmony right on sly and the family stones 'dance to the music' ha ha.. fond memories.. sadly ray is no longer with us, but his fantastic vocals on such tracks as "children of the ghetto" will stay with us for ever.. Keep playin those cool tracks Mary.. Ruy. mike flynn Glynn Foster If you are still need a CD mono version of "Rescue Me" along with its B Side "Soul Of The Man" I can help. Just drop a line...and by the by I'm not a dealer just a soul brother. Thanx Theresa Twiggy Anybody went last nights ALL NIGHTER at Stoke, Me Thinks its time for OLDER DJ's to give way, Come on Kev Roberts give others ago, It still baffles me WHY ONLY VINYL when there have been some great finds and releases. Ken Wright 'ello Mary,Love your show.I'm a North London Classic Soul and Motown Nut and just wondered if any of your listeners know of anywhere that a 51 year old Soulie can go in my area to hear "OUR" music without sticking out like a sore thumb amongst a room full of "Kids".Also Mary, how about playing "You Been Cheatin'" by The Impressions,"I Dig Your Act by The O'Jay's,and/or "I Told You So" by The Chi-Lites.Regards,Ken Wright. Neil Taylor - Charlie in Phoenix's brother AZ Mary, just had an e-mail from my brother in Phoenix (Charlie) to tell me about your programme, every Friday. Will be listenting every Friday from now on. I'm sure you have lots of requests for old clasics but one that sticks in my mind is 'afternoon on the Rhino' by Mike Post Coalition. If you could play it and dedicate it to Charlie, Janis in Phoeniz, AZ, and my long-suffering wife, Barbara, it would bring back lots of memories of music being played '45's' while I was doing my homework!! Clive Rayson Hi Girl, Me again the heading for this night is Going To A Go GO-so any chance of a bit of Smokey. Ray Pearce Just read the posting from Glynn Foster about mono version of Rescue me by Fontella Bass. It also came out in 1968 on an Extended play remember them ha ha, called "Your Chess Requests". Other tracks "the entertainer" Tony Clark, "I had a talk with my man" Mitty Collier and Summertime (from musical porgy and bess). You are welcome to it for the cost of CD "a cellar full of Motown vol 2" if you want it. My mobile number is 07881463610 cheers Ray Chris Perth 'Down Unda' Hi Mary Great to here the Isley Brothers 'Highways of My Life' last week.Chris Jasper's piano intro is just beautiful. They are almost unique in being successful in their two careers with Motown and T-Neck. I prefer the later stuff. The music is as good as anyones and Ronald's voice is superb. So good to hear Linda Jones again too! "Real" soul music must have been too much for the lady listener in Biddulph. Either of those acts are welcome any time. What was Al Green like at the Manchester gig? Anyone go to see an all-time great? Charlie in Phoenix, AZ Hi Mary, Great show! Found it wandering around looking for Northern related stuff. It's 9PM in Phoenix and still 108F (42C), pretty warm out there and the sounds are adding a few more degrees ha! ha!. I've been in Phoenix for over 20 years now, still collecting tracks I first heard nearly 35 years ago. Ex-Torch, Va-Va, Mecca and Casino (there for opening night - didn't think much of it actually, but it got better!). Would love to hear a couple of tracks I haven't heard for years, how about "(I'm gonna) swoop down on you" by Lorenzo Manley and "Don't you just know it" by Jimmy Jones. Keep playing the great tracks Mary, you are bringing back sweet memories. Cheers, Charlie Glyn Foster I was a 25 year resident of Stoke-on-Trent, though now living in Sheffield. A friend still living in Burslem suggested I email you - I've been trying for many a year to track down a copy of Fontella Bass and 'Rescue Me'. Easy enough, you might say - but I want a copy of the original, Mono release. This was only on issue for a few months (on Checker, if my memory serves), before being replaced with the electronic stereo version which is the only one now available. Anyone who has heard this mono release will fondly remember a strong rhythmic bass line that really drove the record along - the 'stereo' version is an anaaemic pale shadow of the full-blooded original! So, if it's possible to play the mono version, I'd be delighted to hear it again; if anyone out there has a mono single to dispose of, I'd be at the front of the queue!! Andy - Crewe For anybody who's looking for Motown Sings Motown Treasures double CD, I have a copy available but be warned it won't be cheap. Anyone interested ? ayupmeduck Mary, Why is the playlist on the website never what you play on the show, there's no point printing it if it's incomplete and out of order (Vandellas did don't mess with Bill)Three tracks you must play, from the same album (Stevie wonder's "Down to earth") Angel baby, Nothing's too good for my baby, and Be cool, be calm and get yourself together. Ps. All the tracks from the Isley Brothers "This old heart of mine" album are brilliant. Ray & Lydia Pearce Hi Mary, "Nigec" is 48 on Tuesday 26th July 2005 could you play either "Looky Looky (Look at me girl)" or "I'm working on your case" by the O'jays for him on your show please. Nige is a true Northern soulie never leavin the scene or the culture since he was a young lad going to the Catacoombs in Wolverhampton. "Keep the faith" matey and have a good day" Thanks in anticipation, Ray and Lyd xx Kay Hi Mary, could the song you were on about last wek be Rack Lauren-Letter of Assassaination(Dear Mr President)?? Many Thanks! Mike whoops! forgot to say it's for David and Charlotte thanks again Sun Shine Soul Torquay Bob Hetherington Mary, had to write in,after listening to Linda Jones version of Your precious Love. It's good, BUT!!!! sounds like she is in a hurry to get home. Now if you could play the Oscar Toney jnr version(1967-stateside-SS2033)just noticed-co-written by one Jerry Butler, you will hear a more laid back soulful rendition.I leave it to you and your listeners to choose. But, Mary isn't it great that we can hear these songs, now and make these comparisons.Different strokes for different folks(Sly Stone)Keep up the good work Mary. Bob Hetherington. I thought Rhinos were almost extinct. I wish the one you keep playing is heading that way! Never has been Soul music. It's just a 10th rate dance record, only good for a documentary on the fascinating beast! Ean Nantwich hiya Mary hows it going great show last week (as usual)please please play Spiral Staircase "More today than yesterday" its been going round and round in my head since you played it weeks ago then the instrumental last week...its a great tune indeed and the pure soul facists hate it which is also great!take it easy Mary keep on keeping on....Peace n chips xxxEan Jan Mary, will you please play 'I love the life I live' by Toni Michaels for Nikki and Neil. Big Day tomorrow. Thanks Chris Perth "Straylia" Just watched a great DVD " Only the Strong Survive" It's a documentary about some of the great soul artists of the 60's and 70's.It is mostly Memphis music (Nothing erong with that!) There are interviews with Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave), the great Anne Peebles- still singing great, 'Wicked' Pickett, Mary Wilson, Rufus and Carla Thomas. The film is about the artists and how they are still performing. Jerry Butler (The Iceman) is their too. It is funny at times and also sad to see how life has treated them. Well worth checking out. OB Hi Mary,im on my sisters computer now so i will try again to email you on this site. Do you dare play the full album version of The Temptations "Masterpiece"? Andy - Crewe WOW you all got your copy of Cellarful of Motown Vol 2 ? it's pure magic and prooved very difficult to get hold of. 42 total gems however what is sad is the fact we have been starved of all these truely brilliant tracks for 40 years. If you haven't got it go buy it now. malcolm potts from manchester Still loving the show Mary, and hi to all the other souly's out there on T'internet. Wouldn't mind the long Stoned Love again. Could Jean Terrell sing or what? I started loving the music in the early 70's when the Resurrection Shuffle by Ashton Gardner & Dyke was the most requested for months!!!!! Soul???? I saw Robert Knight at Bolton & it was shown live on Top of the Pops. Any one remember? Also, a 'B' side by the Stylistics, 'The Point of no Return'. Keep up the good work Mary. Could have done without Dry as a Bone though. Best wishes, Malcolm Potts.xxxxxx Theresa Mary we havn't heard this for a while 'What does it take' Junior Walker. You have a new listener. Regards. Nige' Akehurst ayupmeduck Mary, That medley you played of the Dramatics has to be the worst thing of their's I've ever heard, I have many of their albums and that was not a very good example of their sound at all, tarameduck Russell from London Love the show - Listen to it every Sunday morning. You should get some of Motown's other releases going for a song at about fiver each, i forget the names of them but one as STORMY on and Marvin Gayes killer Sunny to mention a couple, its hard keeping up all the latest releases but some Soul Websites let you have a hear before you buy, going back to Motown Treasures it will cost about £16.00 quid you may just be lucky and get one second hand off e-bay for a few dollars but be quick before the STREET sets to know. Lynne Pemberton Thanks Twiggy for the info regarding Motown Treasures, but can you let me know full web address of finylvinyl or Keith Minshull as I cant find them! Missed out on one on ebay unfortunately. Tez Hi Mary Greetings from the (real)North... Nothing dodgy going on at all with Junior Walker track, I am an Apple Mac user and it's not available throught the iTunes Store. It is available from MSN Music (US site) sadly not UK site - but neither will allow Apple users access to purchase their tracks. Just wondered if any other Apple-savvy Northern Soul fans out there could assist with my quest. Guess I might just have to buy the album and "suffer" the other tracks - HA HA Great show - keep up the good work! Tez evo hi mary, there is no questioning the importance of motown in our music but your obsession and bias towards it has now reached fever pitch.how many more times are we going to be told about "those clever people at motown". let's start to even it up how's about "in the rain" by the dramatics dedicated to chris coates for enduring all that rain in perth australia. AkA (the real thing) A truly superb tight soul outfit. an original member Ray Lake .. who sadly is no longer with us had the unique tenor voice that was likened to the great Smokey Robinson.. He was a good personal friend of mine and I hope he will always be remembered for his fantastic vocals on such tracks as "children of the ghetto" and "I wish you well" the former being covered by phillip bailey... but call me biased, was'nt up to the original by ray.. Anyway mary, keep up the good work and speak again soon.. ruy.. Twiggy To Lynne Pemberton, Hi Motown Treasures I think is deleted so someone like Keith Minshull would be your best option or chance of getting hold of this hard to get Compilation or perhaps E-Bay or maybe Finylvinyl this is a great site to get some fantastic bargains, this site normally delievers the goods, I'll have a look on it for you to see if theres any Motown Treasure Cd for you. Lynne Pemberton Hi Mary you played Pat Lewis's version of "It'll Never Be Over For Me" last week, so how about playing Timi Yuro's version which I think is far superior. Great show keep up the great work! Roland in Bangladesh Mary, I'm an American from real Soul Country (North Carolina) living in Bangladesh so just wanted you to know that we have started a Mary Fox fan club Eastern Divsion. Keep up the good work and thank those teckies who make you availalbe literally around the world. Twiggy Hi Mary, Thanks for playing Fantastic Johnny C's Waiting For The Rain, I wait now for you to play his longer version which is just something else, I would like you to play Marvin Holmes YOU BETTER KEEP HER LP VERSION if the BBC have it in their libary 45 version not hard to get hold of and on a few recent compilations the LP its on is called HONOUR THY FATHER. Lynne Pemberton Hi Mary could any of your listeners tell me where I can get a copy of Motown "Treasures" CD. Have tried Hip-O-Select who usually supply imports, but they say they cant send to UK or EU cos of some contractual thing with Universal! Any other sources? Keeep up the great work. Lynne Tez Anyone know where I can get a copy of the track "Walk In The Night" by Junior Walker and the All Stars. I don't want to buy an album rather a download. I tried the iTunes Store (I'm a Mac user) with no joy, and MSN Music UK doesn't have the track either. The MSN Music (US site) does have it but won't let me (as an Apple owner) download it. Any help or advice welcome. Maybe you can play it on the show Mary! Cheers Laura from Northwich Hiya Mary, My Dad is Nigel who is normally stuck on the motorway travelling up from Heathrow with Bob and Gary at about this time, just him and Gary this week, could you say Hi to them for me and possibly play Otis Redding: (Sittin' On)The Dock of The Bay to remind him of Tenerife-only 8 weeks now. Thanks Mary. Mark from Bedford Mary. Very good programme, thanks. I was listening on the web last week to the programme broadcast on the 3rd June. Heard the Sweet Things, I'm in a world of trouble played by Nick Marshall. Do you know where I may be able to obtain a copy of this on a compilation or something. Mary (kidsgrove) Hi Mary Love the show play it all the time while im on the internet it was nice to hear Jimmy Ruffin i was wondering if you could tell me if i can get a cd of his from anywhere PEK 'Oh Happy Day' by Flame 'N' King & The Bold Ones is available on at least 2 different CDs from Goldmine/Goldsoul... Chris Perth Australia Not seen any comments on the BBC Soul Deep series. Is 6 programmes enough to cover all aspects of this diverse music. I read the reviews of the c.d. on the BBC website and it got bagged. Martin Wilson Ay up Mary! Just a short note from Sunny Scunny.(listen every week on t'internet)I wonder if you could play one of the following tracks that takes me back to school discos in 1977/8. Out on the floor-Dobie Gray,Footsie-Wigans Chosen Few,or Crackin'up over you-Roy Hamilton.I think my all time favourite track is possibly(this week anyway!!)I don't need no Doctor by the late, great Ray Charles.Cheers Mary great show. Chri Coates Perth Australia Hi Mary Follow a class act like Linda Jones with some Doris Duke, Irma Thomas, Ruth Brown,Sam Dees or Freddie North. All are fantastic! Or Some Bobby Bland, Garnett Mimms, Don Covay, Jerry Butler or Billy Stewart! There are so many great singers and we hardly hear them on radio. Your programme is a rare vehicle to promote great artists! Chris Perth Australia A very good programme called "Soulside" is on every Friday in Perth. The radio station RTR-FM is independent and runs through it's subscribers. the site is www.rtrfm.com.au. Follow the links. It's on at 7pm here, so midday your time and an hour earlier at the end of your summertime. The standard of music played is very high.Give it a try, those who can, but you can only get it live. It's not archived (Yet!) Bonus- Holiday tip. Never come to Perth in June. It pours down! ian nicol ( from Telford love your show mary, just got into Northern Soul and travel around the midlands and manchester area finding out the best places to go and get good info from your show on this. i have attached myself to 3 guys from the Stoke area who allow me to tag along with them to all these gigs and i am sincerely grateful to them for allowing me to do this , i would like to say a big thanks to Chris Manly (i think he is guest on your show tonite), little "DONKEY" Kev and Pete for looking after me, and tell Chris to stop TELLING Little Kev that he is c**p at dancing to Northern Soul, he has got a serious complex now when he goes out to these gigs and needs 10 pints just to get on the dancefloor Chris Perth Australia Hope all the listeners are going to see one of the giants of Soul Music soon. Al Green only up the road in Manchester! Oh you lucky people! Andy - Crewe The Coral My Thoughts well its a good pop record with very little SOUL pedigree, the keyboard breaks maybe the slight exception. Theresa Hi Mary, was interested to read Jayne's comment about The Coral. My brother-in-law happens to be involved with the Coral. They are actually doing a tour in America at the moment but when he gets back I'm going to ask him to have a chat with them to see who their influences were, tell them about your comments on the show!!!! Maybe their parents were big northern soul fans, you never know! Twiggy Hi Mary, Its A must have track to get and that is THE FANTASTIC JOHNNY C( waiting for the rain) original great but the re-mix just gives it boost not that it needed it and it is released on June the 21 first what a monster biggy and they dunna come much better than this remember the Cd compilation its called PHILLY STEPS. Mary hi Mary re the corals my 3 kids dont like it so it must be good Eileen Jackson Dear Mary, Was listening to the show on 13th when you played a piano instrumental which i believe you said was Lady Lady Lady byThe Producers, as you normally play cds could you tell me which one i can get this on as i have tried this week to find out but had no luck so far. Thanks for any help you can give and a bigger thanks for such a lovely show, long may the BBC make this type of choice available to us! Neil Dalgliesh Mary, As a 40 something lover of soul born and bred in London your show is great as it brings some previously unheard sounds to these southern ears. Can you help with details of one such previously unheard track; Flaming King, Happy Day? Do I need to take out a second mortgage to obtain a copy or has it been reissued in any format? Many thanks and regards Jayne Hi Mary Just adding to the comments about the Coral. I dont think they are a 'heart brake avenue' band at all! Perish the thought¬ just a young Liverpool band influenced by classic soul (probably from their parents!) and indie pop. But think they are wonderful. And soul musice should be recognised in the here and now not just the past. Soul music has influenced so much music that is around today and we can only be thankful for that by appreciating all aspects of old and modern soul. Love the show, and will be listening with a nice glass of cold riesling on Friday. Could you please play play Mary Wells - what 2 can easily do for me - thanks Alan in Manchester To Alsager Alan, the track you were asking about was Ray Barretto "El Watusi". Ray was the first Hispanic to record a latin song which became a hit in the American Billboard Charts. He was from a Puerto Rican family who emigrated to New York with his parents. He recorded the track in 1961 and it made the US Top 20 in 1963. The website www.allmusic.com lists about a dozen albums which have this track - if you want details, please e-mail me soulman1949@hotmail.co.uk and I can forward the information to you. Regards Alan mary frost (Kidsgrove) hi Mary My fav3 ill say forever J.Ruffin Wherever i lay my hat M.Gaye @ Just ask me etta thomas though i change my mind every weekany chanceof playing Chris Perth Australia Fantastic to hear Linda Jones 'For Your Precious Love" and Agree with Mick Crowe and my brother Anton as to her merits as a great soul singer. Good to have Etta James, another giant on too.Their is no one around today who can touch these two, or Ruth Brown, Esther Phillips, Doris Duke or Irma Thomas. There is much better stuff by Jerry Williams as he alter ego, The Swamp Dogg. Gsg a Maggot, an album he made in Miami in the early 70's is brilliant. His songs on man /woman relationships are hilarious. Check him out! Paul, Wellingborough Great show,Re. Northern Soul Events and what to call them. I agree with one of your listeners last Fri.'A Hapening'is best but not after the Supremes song (which, lets face it, is a bit of a naff POP tune)but after Tommy Neal's Old-school classic GOING TO A HAPPENING. Also 'A Qitter Never Wins' can be found on two CDs 'Ian Levine presents It's OKEH up North (on Goldmine) and Kent CD KEN132 Northern soul obsession-OKEH Vol 1. Great track worth a spin! Keep up the good work Phil Sawyer MARY, do you have in the BBC library CLYDE McPHATTER'S,-- 'Walking in the Footsteps of a Fool.----'I'm so surprised that you're having difficulty finding Clyde McPhatter's 'A LOVER'S QUESTION' Mary. It was one of his most popular records. I saw Clyde at the Twisted Wheel round about '68. He was the most spellbinding soul singer i ever saw, with a delicate and touchingly plaintive voice. I was completely lost in loving admiration probably with my mouth open just a few feet from the stage. Mind you everywhere in the WHEEL was just a few feet from the stage. The song that hit me most was one which he announced as his latest release in the UK, 'Walking in the Footsteps of a Fool'. --I have never seen of it or heard of it since. I have a version by Ben E King, But I would love to hear Clyde's again. ANTON, PERTH To Nick Crowe I didn't suggest that the songs listed on my previous correspondence were my favourite Linda Jones tracks, only that they were played in some Northern Clubs. You could not list many songs by Linda that you could dance too but the 3 listed are still excellent tracks and showcase her fantastic soulful voice. However Nick how about these three; Hypnotised, Stay With Me Forever, Not On The Outside. Your go mate? Mick Crowe Whist I beg to differ with Anton On Linda Jones best recording, is there any chance Mary of you playing 'For Your Precious Love' it really is a remarkable record, and as Anton says, 'not for the squemish'! Many Thanks Mick Crowe peter bentley(benko) Great Show Mary,Great Sounds, Takes me back a few years, can you play Mr bang bang man by Little Hank. listen to your show tuesday nite 31.5.05 here in Heath Hayes Cannock. ANTON, PERTH WA I could not agree more with Nick Crowe in regard to Linda Jones version of 'Your Precious Love' Linda was born 14/1/44 Newark New Jersey. A sufferer of diabetes she collapsed and died backstage at the Apollo, New York 14/3/72. She was way ahead of her time and made some memorable recordings for Cub, Atco, Loma, Neptune and Sylvia Robinsons Turbo labels. Linda's best recordings were those where she used her ability to melisma, (spreading a syllable over several notes) to great effect Whilst most of her recordings would be classified as Deep Soul, she did have a few songs played in the Northern Clubs namely; 'This Guy Hit Me Like TNT, 'I'm so Glad I Found You' and 'Just Can't Live My Life' This great artist was aptly described by Black Music magazine as " perhaps the most soulful singer in the history of R & B music" For those of you unable to have heard Linda check out her Greatest Hits CD (BMG 2002), BUT BE WARNED. IT IS NOT FOR THE SQUEEMISH. the motown rebels just a note for the northern soul police....we are alive and kicking and demanding more motown space.....so come on Mary we need more....dont bow to the northern police.....cheers. marvins men!!!!! john the taxi more supremes please ...thats real soul/motown music. thanks Alan in Manchester Hi Mary - I do enjoy your show which I've been listening to now for over a year, I've recorded most of those programmes I've heard since then. I enjoy the programme tremendously as it suits my broad, very wide varied taste in music, something which would put me at odds with the Soul Police, no doubt! As an aside, I do wish you'd learn the difference between kilohertz and metres when announcing your medium wave frequency!!;-) My introduction to soul was from the fabulous Radio Caroline North which, from 1964 to 1968, beamed out the most amazing black American music, a lot of it American Hot 100 material which never charted here. Wigan Casino passed me by, as I was married first time around - it was just about 18 months ago, I stumbled on some TV and radio featuring Northern Soul and discovered that all this wonderful music I liked when I was a teenager was revered on the Northern Soul circuit! I had finally come home! Since November 2003, I have been attending regularly many of the soul venues in the Greater Manchester area and nearby, I'm now doing something every weekend and getting to know some really nice people into the bargain. My regular haunts are Prestwich (1st Friday monthly), Oakfield in Sale (2nd Saturday), Brighouse (3rd Friday) plus the King Georges Hall in Blackburn every few months, and, as of last night, the incredible Twisted Wheel in Manchester (4th Friday). To those who've seen me around, I'm the grey haired (rapidly disappearing now) and bearded 55 year old enjoying himself on the dancefloors, singing and dancing his heart out! You asked about Clyde McPhatter "A Lover's Question" - I have this on an excellent multi album series released by Atlantic Records in 1968 "The History of Rhythm and Blues", in this case Vol. 4. However it is available on many albums - if you look up the excellent website www.allmusic.com, enter in Clyde McPhatter as the artist, click on the Songs tab, you will see the songs he recorded listed in alphabetical order. "A lover's question" is at the top of that list, click on that entry and you will see about 20 albums listed where you can find that track. I really find allmusic is an excellent reference site for the better known artists. Hope that helps. Keep the faith, Alan Ian from Rotherham You can find A Quitter Never Wins on the "It's Okeh Up North" CD It's track 7 Love The Show Steve in London Hello Mary anychance of playing Bobby Bland CALL ON ME! Are there any other Northern Soulies in Holland ??? Can you play sometime "I gotta find somebody" by the The Velv-ets Jim Alsager Alan I think I'm a tiny bit older than you Mary (mid 50's), I was a regular at Hanleys Penny Farthing Club in the late 1960's and early 1970's and remember a record they used to play and have NEVER heard since. I think it was called 'El Watusi' by Ray somebody or other. It was a bit latin, northern with clapping, but the whole club used to shake when we all stampted and clapped together. I'd love to hear it again, and if you can find it please tell me if its on a CD. Thanks for a great show. mike meir heath to theresa alfie davidson love is a serious business on the golden age of northern soul bestway records at discount discs hanley Nick Marshall Derek - the Velours are the same group as the Fantastics ("Something old, something new" etc). Keep the faith" Linda Betteley Hi again Mary, thanks for playing the request for us last week, Lizzie & Steve rang us to say it was on and they were really pleased. Sorry to hear you had had such a long night and day. Here´s an offer for you how about an outside broadcast from our little roof terrace in the sunshine!!!!! Bet Radio Stoke will subsidise the costs.....No seriously enjoyed the show AGAIN. If Vicky from Feg Heys is listening I do apologise have lost e mail address that is why haven´t been in touch. Bye for now, Linda & Dave from Los Pacos (Costa del Sol). PHIL Sawyer So you were up all night on election coverage Mary? I hope we have another election soon; your Friday show was terrific. I mean you! not just the music. A brilliant atmosphere! Makes me think of READY, WILLING, AND ABLE--Jimmy Holliday and Clydie King. Jez Finnemore Hi Mary, It's been a while since I wrote in, but still listening every week as are growing numbers of Northern Soul fans globally! I heard you mention that you couldn't get hold of a copy of "Condition Red" by The Baltimore and Ohio Marching Band. Well I have a copy. It was a popular stomper at Thursfield Community Centre in the mid seventies. It is on the jubilee label, JB-5592A. If you do get hold of a copy, please give it a spin on the show. I can't promise that I'll dance quite so energetically to it as I used to, but I would be gratefull to hear it played. All the best, Jez (The Leeds Contingent) kev does anyone know if tony michaels i love the life i live has been released on a cd if it has which cd is it on thanx Twiggy Hi Mary, Rebbecca asked you to play Heaven Must Have Sent You by the Elgins, Bang on te Supremes version for her, i'm sure Rebbecca will like it and if anyones after this version it was released not so long ago so shouldn't be to hard to get. PHIL Sawyer- E. London Question: What do you geet when you cross James Bond with Bobby Bland? Answer: Bud Harper's, 'MR.SOUL' . It was great to hear that again Mary, but shocking to realise that, yes, we really were that conceited back then. No wonder that Bobby Bland was advised to put the record out under the name Bud Harper. 'Mr. SOUL' is the self centred opposite of the persona who sang 'THESE HANDS' and 'CALL ON ME'.-- Long ago, in '69, we thought we were 'Mr Soul" me and my mate 'Noddy' Knowler, except we never got so far as the fast car, in fact we never even had a van for our mobile disco! We liked to imagine that we had the chicks hanging around though! ---Two REQUESTS if possible please Mary; you could shame us with the memories of a misspent youth and play, 'THE CHEATER' by Bob Kuban and the In Men., and melt our hearts with Bobby Bland's, 'CALL ON ME'. Thanks for the music and also for bringing us together. Phil Sawyer. Mick Crowe I enjoyed listening to you play 'For your Precious Love' by Jerry Butler the other week. Whilst it is his own song, to me the definitive version has got to be the Linda Jones version. This record knocked me out when I first heard it on the Mike Raven Soul Show in the early Seventies, and to this day Ive never ever heard it played on the radio since. Incidentally do any listeners remember The Compass club in Torquay from that time. Living in Sussex we used to go to Torquay for Bank Holidays and it was the only contact we had with any kind of a club that played nothing but Soul music. Linda & Dave Betteley on the Costa del Sol Hola Mary, here we are again in a very very sunny Los Pacos on the Costa del Sol. We had a lovely surprise last week - four of our best friends came over, we hadn´t got a clue they were coming so of course we had a lovely time. Weather was good, beer was nice and cold!!! Anyway, they all came to ours on the Tuesday afternoon and we got playing all our oldies and of course there were a couple of Tamla Motown records being played and I thought it would be nice if you could play one of the following, The Isley Brothers, My love is your love (It was one of those when it was played the women all went OH I LOVE THIS!!!!) another one was the The Four Tops, Shake Me Wake Me (when it´s over). One I thought you might like was Jnr Walkers TWIST LACKAWANNA, can´t beat a bit of sax..... Anyway, if you could just say HELLO LIZZIE, JULIE, COLIN AND STEVE it was lovely seeing you all. See you soon. Linda & Dave Andy from Crewe Mary as we all constantly discover and rediscover greay sounds any chance of playing The Isleys - My Love Is Your Love (forever). heard it for the first for ages recently pure quality. |
