Rana Tufail - director of the Islamic Centre - talks to Radio Stoke's Tim Wedgwood
We called it a voyage of discovery - it was a challenge in lots of ways. BBC Radio Stoke has never presented a whole breakfast show from a Mosque - and for the people who use the Bedford Road Islamic Centre in Shelton it was something of a first for them. The aim of the day was simply to explain to listeners a little more about Islam, the Muslim way of life and to make new friends.

It started just after 4 am with the Imam and his call to prayer.

It was fascinating to hear the stories. There's the Longton woman who converted to Islam for love and is now bringing up her three boys as Muslims; the teenagers who follow their faith despite pressures from peers; the women who come to pray every day and the teachings of the Koran.

Gentle and peace loving were words we heard often during the visit - but we also wanted to know how the world-changing events of September 11th had affected the people thousands of miles away from the hotspots of global conflict. We found a strong desire for harmony.

The Mayor of Stoke on Trent, Mike Wolfe came along to emphasise his personal desire for cohesive communities and issued a challenge to the people of the city to make it work.

And the people who've lived in Shelton for many many years gave their backing to the new communities settling there.

You can hear some of the Sounds of the Mosque and see some of those who were there.
